    Definition
    • Nystagmus is a rapid, involuntary, motion of the eyeball (side to side, up and down, rotating and/or oscillating). Nystagmus can be caused by tumors or drugs (such as barbiturates). It can also be a congenital condition (present at birth).
    MSDS Relevance
Exposure to certain chemicals can cause nystagmus. This condition is very easy for other persons to observe. Be certain you read the MSDS's for all chemicals that you are working with and note whether exposure to any of these can cause this condition. As always, take proper precautions to limit your exposure to such materials.

Nystagmus
Nystagmus is an involuntary jerking of the eye . Everyone has it to some extent, but it is usually abnormal when it occurs spontaneously (rather than being induced by gaze or positioning) or when looking at a stationary object. The degree of nystagmus varies greatly between people and even in the same person at different times. Some things (such as alcohol and other central nervous system depressants) accentuate it and make it more visible. In some people, it is clearly visible naturally. There are dozens of different kinds of nystagmus. One can easily see nystagmus in someone else by having that person close their eyes and spinning them around. After a few spins, have the person stop and open their eyes. A distinct jerking of the eyes from side to side will be seen: this is rotational nystagmus. Strobe lights also produce nystagmus. It is also a symptom of many diseases.

NYSTAGMUS
Clinical lecture by Dr. Stephen Hall
"There can be few signs in clinical neurology that cause more confusion than nystagmus yet at the same time gives the clinician as much clinical information". P. Rudge, Clinical Neuro-otology. In preparation for this I reviewed Bates, Prior, Cecil (Essentials), Cecil (text), Harrison's, Davidson's, Brain's, Adam's, and Harrison ( Neurological Skills). It is no wonder students have trouble with the concepts as so little is written and what there is, is without structure. I can only recommend the last 3 and Cecil Textbook. Nystagmus is a repetitive rhythmic involuntary oscillation of the eyes that is usually conjugate. It can be thought of as an abnormality in ocular posturing and is due to a disturbance in the pathways, the organization of or the integration of the pathways of the visual or the labyrinthine systems.
Technique:
- ask patient to follow your finger but you must be well away to avoid convergence.
- only move 30 degrees each side as will loose binocular vision.

Definition
Rhythmic, oscillating motions of the eyes are called nystagmus. The to-and-fro motion is generally involuntary. Vertical nystagmus occurs much less frequently than horizontal nystagmus and is often, but not necessarily, a sign of serious brain damage. Nystagmus can be a normal physiological response or a result of a pathologic problem. Description
The eyes play a critical role in maintaining balance. They are directly connected to other organs of equilibrium, most important of which is the inner ear. Paired structures called the semicircular canals deep in the skull behind the ears sense motion and relay that information to balance control centers in the brain. The eyes send visual information to the same centers. A third set of sensors consists of nerve endings all over the body, particularly in joints, that detect position. All this information is integrated to allow the body to navigate in space and gravity. It is possible to fool this system or to overload it with information so that it malfunctions. A spinning ride at the amusement park is a good way to overload it with information. The system has adapted to the spinning, expects it to go on forever, and carries that momentum for some time after it is over. Nystagmus is the lingering adjustment of the eyes to tracking the world as it revolves around them.

Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) (Auszugsweise Übersetzung aus dem Spanischen) ABSTRACT: Biofeedback oculomotor rehabilitation: A program for nystagmus. This paper presents a biofeedback electrooculographic (EOG) based program, for the nystagmus oculomotor rehabilitation. The hypothesis is that the program application shall be efficient on the nystagmus reduction, consequently on the visual acuity and contrast sensibility increases. The rehabilitation program was applied to 10 horizontal nystagmus subjects (8-16 years old), following a design with repeated measures (before/after). As dependent variables the scoring obtained in EOG register, scoring in visual acuity and scoring in contrast sensibility was considered. Results show a significant decrease in nystagmic ocular movement, and significant increases on the visual perception measures. The results are discussed within a optimization and generalization context, including the need for such programs into the actual framework in visual rehabilitation.

How it can affect visual perception
What is nystagmus
Nystagmus means the eyes make involuntary repetitive, rhythmic oscillations. It is considered to be a fault in the mechanisms that hold the eyes or fixation steady, meaning the neural systems involved in nystagmus include the cerebellovestibular, optokinetic, and pursuit systems (which makes it real a challenge to research).
We have manifest, latent, and manifest-latent nystagmus for you. Manifest means it's there all the time, latent means it's not there unless you occlude one eye, and manifest-latent is an oxymoronic expression meaning it's there all the time but much worse when one eye is occluded.
Latent and Manifest-Latent Nystagmus
These two occur commonly in essential infantile esotropia, and are something else entirely than manifest congenital nystgamus. Latent nystagmus appears only when one eye is covered, then both eyes develop nystagmus with the slow phase toward the occluded eye and the fast phase in the other direction (you don't see anything during a fast phase. Slow phases give you some time to actually process the images flashing over your foveas).
Anywhere between a 10 and 52% percent incidence of (latent and manifest-latent) nystagmus in those with congenital esotropia syndrome has been reported. Many turn their face such that the preferred eye is turned inward a bit; in that position the nystagmus is absent or much less. Latent nystagmus is a real bother during a standard visual acuity test - that always involves the covering of one eye, and looking straight ahead too. That way, you'll may never get any further than the big E on the Snellen chart, despite the fact that you might very well see 20/20 when viewing binocularly.

Nystagmus
Nystagmus is the name given to repetitive eye movements which occur involuntarily. They are usually horizontal - where the eyes jerk quickly to one side and then slowly return to look straight ahead, then the process repeats itself. More rarely they are vertical - the eyes jerk up and down - or circular. Nystagmus is usually a result of disturbances in the function of the balance organs in the ear, or the connections in the brain. It may be present from birth, and be associated with poor vision. Eye Condition Fact Sheets
What is Nystagmus?
Nystagmus is an involuntary movement of the eyes - usually from side to side, but sometimes the eyes oscillate up and down or even in a circular motion. Most people with Nystagmus have vision which is much worse than average - well below what is considered to be short sighted. Most sufferers can be classified as partially sighted and a small number are deemed blind. Who is affected? Nystagmus which appears in the first six months of life is called 'early onset Nystagmus', or 'congenital' or 'infantile Nystagmus'. The condition may also develop later in life when the term 'acquired Nystagmus' is used. What causes Nystagmus? Nystagmus in early childhood may be caused by a defect in the eye or the visual pathway from the eye to the brain. It occurs in a wide range of eye disorders of childhood such as cataract, glaucoma, some disorders of the retina and albinism. It may also be found in children who have multiple disabilities such as Down's Syndrome. Many children with Nystagmus have no eye, brain or other health problems. In this case the condition is called 'congenital idiopathic Nystagmus', or 'idiopathic infantile Nystagmus', meaning that the condition is observed, or starts, early in life and the cause is unknown.
