Oncology Team ABOUT US Healthcommunities.com Pressroom Testimonials Overview Lymphomas are cancers of the lymphatic system - the body's blood-filtering tissues that help to fight infection and disease. Like other cancers, lymphomas, occur when cells divide too much and too fast. Growth control is lost, and the lymphatic cells may overcrowd, invade, and destroy lymphoid tissues and metastasize (spread) to other organs. There are two general types of lymphomas: "Hodgkin's Disease" (named after Dr. Thomas Hodgkin, who first recognized it in 1832) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The lymphatic tissue in Hodgkin's disease contains specific cells - Reed-Sternberg cells - that are not found in any other cancerous lymphomas or cancers. These cells distinguish Hodgkin's disease (HD) from non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHLs). Anatomy The lymphatic system - the target of lymphomas - includes the lymph nodes and other organs that make up the immune and blood-forming (hematopoietic) elements of the body.

of entire published article attached) This large study published in AIDS (2001 March 30; 15(5):629-633) reports that both KS and NHL incidence have declined since June 1996 (the advent of HAART) but that the incidence of KS has declined more than NHL. Time period Incidence/1000 person-years (95% CI) KS July '94 -June '96 Jan '96 -Dec '98 NHL July '94 -June '96 June '96-Dec '98 Australian researchers report:
This study finds decreasing incidence rates of both NHL and KS in people with HIV since the introduction of potent anti-retroviral therapies. For NHL, incidence had been increasing prior to 1996, and this increase masked the decrease since the introduction of the new HIV therapies when long-term trends were considered. The increase in NHL incidence in the early epidemic, which was also seen for KS, may have been related to increasing immune deficiency of the cohort. This study also confirms at a population level the previously described decreases in the incidence of KS during the 1990s. This decrease began before the introduction of the new therapies. KS has decreased in incidence by far more than NHL, so that NHL is now the most common AIDS-associated cancer in Australia. It is unclear why rates of NHL appear to be decreasing more slowly than other AIDS-associated illnesses, but there are at least three possible explanations. First, unlike KS, NHL does not appear to be due to a specific infective agent, so partial immune restoration may be less effective in prevention. Second, NHL occurs at a less severe degree of immune deficiency than most other AIDS-associated illnesses. Third, there is evidence that chronic stimulation of the immune system is a risk factor for AIDS-related NHL, and potent combination antiretroviral therapy may be only partially effective at reversing this immune stimulation [14,15]. (Editorial note from Jules Levin: does this make a case towards earlier treatment for HIV to avoid immune decline and active viral stimulation which treatment inhibitis? Perhaps this is one consideration among many. Also to be considered, is what's the risk of getting NHL whether therapy is started earlier or later?)

      Overview
To Learn More About This Topic: Chat with Us Email Us Lymphoma is a general term for cancers of the lymphatic system - an important part of the body’s immune system that fights disease and infection. About five percent of all cancers in the United States are lymphomas. There are two types of lymphoma: Hodgkin’s disease is one of these two types. All other types of lymphomas are considered non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), and will be discussed here. According to the National Cancer Institute, since 1973 the incidence of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the United States has increased about seventy-five percent—one of the largest increases among major cancer sites. NCI has estimated that about 1 in 52 men and 1 in 61 women in the United States will be diagnosed with NHL during their lifetime. Part of the increase in NHL incidence in recent years is a result of the AIDS epidemic: NHL is sixty times more common among AIDS patients than in the general U.S. population. Herbicides and insecticides have been linked to risk for NHL in studies of farmers, pesticide applicators, and other occupational groups exposed to high levels of these chemicals. An NCI study found that contamination of drinking water with nitrate, a chemical found in fertilizers, may also be associated with an increased risk of NHL, particularly in agricultural areas.

06/29/2001 - Updated 12:03 PM ET Usenet creator Jim Ellis dies Ellis, who had been battling non-Hodgkins lymphoma for two years, died at home in Beaver County early Thursday, said his wife, Carolyn. Most recently an Internet security consultant with Sun Microsystems, Ellis was one of the creators of Usenet, which linked computers and allowed people to share information and reply to messages. Usenet began in 1979 when Ellis and another Duke graduate student, Tom Truscott, thought of hooking together computers to share information. At the beginning of 1980, the network consisted of two sites at Duke and one at the University of North Carolina. Usenet quickly became a popular means of trading and sharing information internationally before the World Wide Web came into existence. Allan Fisher, chief executive officer of Carnegie Technology Education, a subsidiary of Carnegie Mellon University which develops Web-based courses, said Usenet could be considered "the first big community application" of an interconnected system of computers.

June 20th - 3rd Anniversary of David's passing - Forever in our hearts... Forever on our minds Welcome to our Memorial home page dedicated to our son and brother David. We are the Schneider family, living in Southern Ontario, Canada. Let us introduce ourselves. Joyce Schneider is a high school teacher of Drama and Performing Arts. Her spouse, Michael, is a teacher in the same school, head of the same department, and teaches English as well as Drama and Performing Arts. As you can see, we have absolutely nothing in common! Our beautiful daughter, Mary, is 16 years old. She is an accomplished dancer and baseball player, loves acting and singing, and is now finishing grade 11 at her mom and dad's school, and loves it. Our boy David passed away on June 20th 1998 after a long and struggle with non-Hodgkin’s’ lymphoma at the age of 11. This Web sight was intended in part to be a celebration of his life and we are grateful that he was able to participate in its creation. It is our David who greets you when you click on the " Cat Gallery " link, along with his beloved Butterscotch; it was recorded just 4 days prior to his passing. Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma
NON-HODGKIN'S LYMPHOMA Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma January 8, 2002 (Reviewed: September 11, 2003) Question My sister has non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that has just recurred after 7 years. I would like more information on this.
Answer Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a type of malignancy (cancer) that affects cells involved in the immune system and that mostly reside in the lymph nodes. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is not a single disease but a collection of numerous types of lymphoma with greatly divergent clinical presentations, prognoses, and treatments. The current classification scheme for these includes over 20 sorts. Given this broad spectrum of diseases under the general classification of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a complete answer to your request for information about the significance of a recurrence is not possible.
For those types of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma generally referred to as "indolent" (e.g., follicular small cell, low grade), recurrences are expected, and treatment is aimed at relief of symptoms rather than prolongation of life. In contrast, in diffuse B-cell lymphoma (an intermediate grade lymphoma), treatment aimed at cure is feasible. A number of new treatments have recently been developed for several different types of lymphoma and more are being investigated. In summary, the type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is very important to further discuss the likelihood of recurrence. Please see the link below.

All health and treatment decisions must be made in consultation with your physician(s), utilizing your specific medical information. The information on this website is subject to change. The information provided below has been modified from that furnished by the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute of the United States of America. WHAT ARE NON-HODGKIN'S LYMPHOMAS?
Lymphoma is a general term for cancers that develop in the lymphatic system. They account for about 4 percent of all cases of cancer in this country.
The most common type of lymphoma is called Hodgkin's disease. All other lymphomas are grouped together and are called non- Hodgkin's lymphomas.
The lymphatic system is part of the body's immune defense system. Its job is to help fight diseases and infection. The lymphatic system includes a network of thin tubes that branch, like blood vessels, into the tissues throughout the body. Lymphatic vessels carry lymph, a colorless, watery fluid that contains infection-fighting cells called lymphocytes. Along this network of vessels are groups of small, bean-shaped organs called lymph nodes that filter the lymph as it passes through the nodes. Clusters of lymph nodes are found in the underarm, groin, neck, and abdomen. Other parts of the lymphatic system are the spleen, thymus, tonsils, and bone marrow. Lymphatic tissue is also found in other parts of the body, including the stomach, intestines, and skin.
