Nightmares and night terrors
What is a Nightmare?
Nightmares occur when your child is woken while having a bad dream. It is sometimes not easy to comfort your child because he or she might recall the content of the nightmare and be afraid to go back to sleep. Give your child a reassuring hug and then settling back to sleep is usually quick. Nightmares can occur in children of any age and are most likely to happen during the later part of the sleep such as in the early morning. This is when Rapid Eye Movement (REM) or Dream Sleep usually occurs. Nightmares can reflect worries that your child might be having during the day and it might be useful to talk to about this with them.
What's the difference between Nightmares and Night Terrors?
What to do?
Nightmares
With Nightmares, it is usually enough to reassure your child and stay with them until they are comfortably off to sleep again. The next day, it usually helps to talk about the dream and ask about any worries or fears they may be experiencing.
Night Terrors
With Night Terrors, your child will appear to be confused and not fully awake so keeping them out of harm's way is important. Make sure the home environment is safe as they may sometimes run around (see

Night terror
Definition: Night terrors are a sleep disorder involving abrupt awakening from sleep in a terrified state.
Alternative Names: Pavor nocturnus; Sleep terror disorder
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The normal sleep cycle involves distinct stages from light drowsiness to deep sleep. REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is a different type of sleep, where the eyes move rapidly and vivid dreaming is most common. During a night, there will be several cycles of non-REM and REM sleep. Night terror (sleep terror) occurs during Stage 3 and Stage 4 sleep (deep sleep). The cause is unknown but night terrors are commonly associated with periods of emotional tension stress , or conflict.
Night terror is similar to nightmares except that nightmares usually occur during REM sleep and include unpleasant or frightening dreams. Nightmares are most common in the early morning. Night terrors occur usually in the first half of the night heralded by a scream. The child does not usually remember the details of the scare. Nightmares are normal on occasion, especially after frightening movies/TV shows or emotional situations.

While in the marketplace three Arab men attack her because she is dressed provocatively, but a stranger, Sabina, saves her. The sophisticated Sabina introduces her to the handsome Sheik Mahmoud and Genie allows him to seduce her. She is then introduced Paul Chevalier, a weird puppeteer who claims to be a descendant of the Marquis de Sade, who draws her into a series of sadomasochistic sexual games. At the same time those that try to warn her and flee from the games, saying that Chevalier and the others are a cult, start turning up murdered. Tobe Hooper once had a hit with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). But since then Hooper’s career has been a rather ragged one - and in the eyes of some of his more severe critics has been a single downward slide ever since Texas Chain Saw . One doesn’t entirely agree with this as Hooper has made some worthwhile efforts - the slasher movie The Funhouse Poltergeist (1982) under Spielberg, the entertaining

with Walter L. Larimore, MD My five-year-old daughter seems to have some kind of sleep problem. She’ll go to bed with no problem, but then about four hours later she wakes up screaming and crying. The next morning she doesn’t even remember it. Often her eyes are open during the episode, but she’s not awake. Sometimes she responds slightly to my wife and me when we’re trying to calm her, sometimes not. My wife has noted that when we wake her up an hour after going to bed, she sleeps through the night without any instances. What could be causing this? It sounds to me like night terrors, which is different than nightmares or scary dreams. It is common for children to have nightmares. They usually occur between 4:00 and 6:00 a.m. Children can be comforted after they have a bad dream, and they can remember it. Night terrors, on the other hand, are less common and usually occur between 1:00 and 3:00 a.m. Children will wake up screaming — and maybe sweating, breathing fast or have dilated pupils. Children are absolutely terrified, yet still asleep, even if their eyes are wide open. They are difficult to wake up and don’t remember the incident later at all.

ASP vs Night Terrors (NT)
Checklist for distinguishing Awareness during Sleep Paralysis from Night Terrors: ASP occurs during REM sleep (Stage 1). Night Terrors occur during nonREM sleep (Stage 4 or Delta sleep). ASP experiencers have excellent recall - often in excruciating detail. NT experiencers often recall nothing or only a single frightening image. ASPrs are unable to move. NTrs can flail about and sometimes sleepwalk. The sounds ASPrs make are barely audible to others. The screams of NTrs are often heard by others. The median age of onset for ASP is 14. Night Terrors are most frequent in children 3 - 8. Others have no difficulty awakening an ASPr; a touch is often sufficient. Parents report great difficulty awakening a child from NT. ASP experiencers can learn to direct the course of their experiences into a pleasant lucid dream or OBE. This is not known to happen with NT experiencers. About the only thing Awareness during Sleep Paralysis has in common with Night Terrors is that both may be promoted by stress.

Beating the Night Terrors
One of the scariest things about being self-employed is wondering where your next paycheck will come from. Here are some smart soloists who never have to look far when looking for new clients. From: October 1999 By: Judy Fireman It's the rare and perhaps non-existent independent professional who doesn't devote a good deal of time to hustling new business. That 3 o'clock in the morning fear, "Where will my next assignment come from?" is too familiar to all of us. (Cold comfort: Fortune 500 CEOs worry where their next big revenue source will come from, too.) In the best of times, the future is always lurking. Here's the good news: when you get those middle-of-the-night terrors, you can look to your past for relief.

Night Terrors
Frances Sonnabend It seemed odd to be going somewhere without Richard. For all of their 37 years of married life, Phyllis had never gone anywhere alone. Well, to the grocery store, or Christmas shopping, maybe. But never to a social gathering of any kind. "I know, Richard," she murmured. "You wouldn't think it proper for me to go." But she felt obligated to attend the Halloween party, the first social get-together the company had sponsored since she began working there. Left a widow at age 57, she considered herself very lucky to get a job to tide her over until social security kicked in. She was dressed in a long white skirt and full-cut white blouse. On the seat next to her lay the accessories for her White Witch costume a white conical hat with an attached fringe of straw-colored hair, and a witch mask with a white face and smiling red mouth. When she had tried the hat and mask on at home in front of the mirror, she had felt Richard's disapproval and had taken them off at once. She hoped her co-workers wouldn't think she looked ridiculous. She didn't think they would. They were very nice. The white lines of the freeway unreeled, ever beckoning, in the glare of the Oldsmobile's headlights. Lulled by the hum of tires on smooth pavement, Phyllis felt drowsy. She had not slept well lately. Not since Richard had suffered that fatal heart attack on a cold moonless night in January.

Nightmares and Night Terrors
What are night terrors?
A night terror is a partial waking from sleep with behaviors such as screaming, kicking, panic, sleep walking, thrashing, or mumbling. Night terrors usually occur within two hours of the time a child goes to sleep. They are harmless and each episode will end in deep sleep. They are considered normal until age 6. The following are common characteristics of a night terror:
  • Your child is frightened but cannot be awakened or comforted.
  • Your child's eyes are wide open but he/she does not know that you are there.
  • Your child may think objects or persons in the room are scary.
  • The episode lasts from 10 to 30 minutes.
  • Your child often does not remember the episode in the morning.
How to help a child during a night terrors:
  • Try to help your child return to normal sleep. You will not be able to awaken your child, so do not try. Turn on the lights so that your child is less confused by shadows. Make soothing comments. Hold your child if it seems to help him/her feel better. Shaking or shouting at your child may cause the child to become more upset.
  • Protect your child against injury. During a night terror, a child can fall down a stairway, run into a wall, or break a window. Try to gently direct your child back to bed.
