Definition
Night terrors are a sleep disorder characterized by anxiety episodes with extreme panic, often accompanied by screaming, flailing, fast breathing, and sweating and that usually occur within a few hours after going to sleep.
Description
Night terrors occur most commonly in children between the ages of four and 12 but can also occur at all ages. Affected individuals usually suffer these episodes within a few hours after going to sleep. They appear to bolt up suddenly, and wake up screaming, sweating and panicked. The episode may last anywhere from five to 20 minutes. During this time, the individual is actually asleep, although the eyes may open. Quite often, nothing can be done to comfort the affected person. Very often, the person has no memory of the episode upon waking the next day. Night terrors are differentiated from nightmares in that they have been shown to occur during Stage 4 of sleep, or in REM sleep, while nightmares can occur anytime throughout the sleep cycle.

Childhood Illnesses and Conditions

: Nightmares and Night Terrors in Children

One of the most common concerns of parents is sleep disturbances, including nightmares and night terrors.
About Nightmares:
Nightmares occur quite commonly in young children. Typically, a child with a nightmare wakes up completely, is very anxious, and usually remembers the content of the dream vividly. Childhood nightmares require no specific treatment, except for reassuring the frightened child. Occasionally, when nightmares become more frequent or occur on a regular basis, it may be a sign of stress in the child's life or environment. Also, the content of the bad dream or nightmare may be a clue to what is stressing the child. Therefore, extreme situations of persistent nightmares may warrant evaluation of the child's family/social environment and psychological state.
About Night Terrors: Night terrors occur less commonly and are different from nightmares. Typically, children with terrors are out of control, but still awake. They may be sitting up in bed, appear frightened, staring with eyes wide open. They may also be sweating, breathing heavily and complaining of seeing peculiar things or objects that are not really there. This period of "terror" may last for up to several minutes and then the child will usually go back to sleep. What distinguishes night terrors (which occur in less than 5% of children) from nightmares is that the child does not recall the dream or event leading to the night terror, and in many cases, does not recall that anything at all happened during the night.

What are nightmares? Nightmares are scary dreams. Most children have them from time to time. One out of every four children has nightmares more than once a week. Most nightmares happen very late in the sleep period (usually between 4 and 6 a.m.). Your child may wake up and come to you for comfort. Usually, he or she will be able to tell you what happened in the dream and why it was scary. Your child may have trouble going back to sleep. Your child might have the same dream again on other nights. What are night terrors? Some children have a different kind of scary dream called a "night terror." Night terrors happen during deep sleep (usually between 1 and 3 a.m.). A child having a night terror will often wake up screaming. He or she may be sweating and breathing fast. Your child's pupils (the black center of the eye) may look larger than normal. At this point, your child may still be asleep, with open eyes. He or she will be confused and might not answer when you ask what's wrong. Your child may be difficult to wake and, on awakening, he or she usually won't remember the night terror.

People afflicted with sleepwalking and night terrors appear to rise out of what appears to be deep sleep and act as if they are awake. They, typically, won't respond to other people. They also won't remember what transpired in the night on the following day. Sleepwalking seems to run in families. It is often associated with sleep deprivation. Night terrors and sleepwalking are more likely to occur in the beginning of the night. The victims pass back and forth rapidly between sleep and wakefulness. Most cases of sleepwalking and night terrors begin in early childhood. They can continue into adulthood. They can begin as early as children are able to walk, but it mostly occurs between the ages of four and eight. Usually, they disappear spontaneously after adolescence. Night Terrors Night terrors are most frightening to the parents or others around the victims. Children with night terrors rise up out of a deep sleep seemingly truly terrified, often screaming with fright. Their eyes are open wide, as if seeing some horror that others cannot. Their hearts race, they may tremble, and they take short, shallow breaths. About 3 percent of children experience night terrors. Night terrors occur most often in children between two and five years of age and usually disappear completely by age seven. The disorder also may appear late in life.

Is your child having frequent nightmares? It may have more to do with where your child is at developmentally than anything else.
Sleep researchers have discovered that children dream far more than adults. For example, studies indicate that a child under a year dreams for about five and a half hours a night, while a twenty year old adult will dream for only one and a half hours. Unfortunately dreams sometimes turn into nightmares, especially common among preschool and preteen children. Sleep specialist, Dr. Shelly Weiss explains that the reason children suffer from nightmares most at these ages is because this is "when there are more conflicts in a child's life. In the young child these may be around separation and starting school, and in the older child they may be around preteen issues. So during those periods, the infrequent nightmare isn't a concern."
Children are often frightened by their nightmares and may require a little extra assurance when they wake from one. But not so for night terrors. Dr. Weiss says children don't even remember having them. "A night terror usually occurs in a preschool child. It's a partial awakening so the child is half awake, half asleep. When you see the child it may be quite scary because your child may have a glazed look, be thrashing and screaming, yet in the morning will have no memory of that event."
As alarming as night terrors are for the parent observing them, they are in fact completely harmless. Dr. Jonathan Flemming of the UBC Hospital's Sleep Clinic explains that "a night terror is a physiological state of hyper-arousal and what happens in that state is people have rapid heartbeat, are panting and breathing much more rapidly than usual, and they appear terrified."

However, the parent witnesses the outburst and often becomes alarmed. Night terrors differ from nightmares in that they are less common, occur in the deep sleep cycle, occur most often at ages 4 to 5, and usually stop by age 8. If a night terror occurs:

NIGHT TERRORS: SCREAMS FROM YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS
By Laura V. Hyde
Dreams are said to be the oldest language known to man yet for many they remain misunderstood. For example, many fear and reject their nightmares; versus respecting and embracing them for the important messages they hold.
Night terrors
are not only dreams where you are paralyzed with fear, but are dreams where fear, upset, and anxiety are felt well into the waking state. Night terrors do not happen over night; rather they are a result of several previous dreams that have gone ignored.
What Night Terrors Reveal
Night terrors are messages repeated from your subconscious. They are communications that, at times, literally SCREAM at you (or make you scream!). Night terrors are akin to you trying to verbally communicate with someone who is deaf: no matter how loud you speak, the person cannot hear you. Night terrors occur because your subconscious knows you are not listening to it. As many dreams as it may have sent to you, you have responded with a deaf ear.

What are night terrors?
A night terror is a partial waking from sleep with behaviors such as screaming, kicking, panic, sleep walking, thrashing, or mumbling. Night terrors usually occur within two hours of the time a child goes to sleep. They are harmless and each episode will end in deep sleep. Night terrors usually disappear by age 12 or sooner. The following are common characteristics of a night terror:
  • Your child is frightened but cannot be awakened or comforted.
  • Your child's eyes are wide open but he/she does not know that you are there.
  • Your child may think objects or persons in the room are scary.
  • The episode lasts from 10 to 30 minutes.
  • Your child often does not remember the episode in the morning.
How to help a child during a night terror:
  • Try to help your child return to normal sleep. You will not be able to awaken your child, so do not try. Turn on the lights so that your child is less confused by shadows. Make soothing comments. Hold your child if it seems to help him/her feel better. Shaking or shouting at your child may cause the child to become more upset.
  • Protect your child against injury. During a night terror, a child can fall down a stairway, run into a wall, or break a window. Try to gently direct your child back to bed.

Night terrors, sometimes referred to as confusional arousal, occur in five to 15 per cent of children between the ages of four and six, though they can appear in babies as young as nine months. Technically speaking, they are caused by partial awakenings from non-REM, or non-dream, sleep. A child in this state may cry, whimper, and flail. "He won't look scared, but he'll appear to be confused," says Dr. Richard Ferber, author of Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems (Dorling Kindersley). How are they different from nightmares?
Nightmares occur during rapid eye movement (REM) or dream sleep. A child who has had a nightmare is likely to have a clear idea of what scared him, though before before he is about two, he probably won't be able to articulate his fright. He may also be afraid to fall back asleep, and in the morning, he may remember that he had a bad dream.

http://www.jeremytaylor.com/night.htm
Dream Analysis: Sleep-Walking, Sleep Talking and "Night Terrors" All dreams come in the service of health and wholeness. The generic message of every remembered dream is: "There is a potentially positive, creative, transformative role for the dreamer's waking mind to play in the further unfoldment of whatever is being given symbolic shape in this dream." In other words, no remembered dream ever came to say to the dreamer, "Nyeah, nyeah, nyeah - you have these problems and there's nothing you can do about them...!" If the dream is remembered at all, than it means that the dreamer has the inherent ability to deal creatively and effectively with all the problems and "issues" that the dream raises in symbolic form; if this were not true, the dream would simply not have been remembered. When a dream experience is not remembered, then the health & wholeness promoting quality of the dream must be sought somewhere other than the expansion and development of the dreamer's own waking consciousness. In the case of sleep-walking and sleep-talking, and the special case of "night terrors", (about which more below),the dreamer is most often very difficult to awaken, and if/when it is accomplished, most often does not remember what was going on "inside" that was the occasion for the strange "acting out"

Night terrors Night terrors (parasomnias) are the most extreme and dramatic of arousal disorders and the most distressing to witness. A night terror episode can often begin with a loud scream or shout, and can produce signs that suggest extreme terror, such as dilated pupils, rapid breathing, racing heart, sweating and extreme agitation. The victim may jump out of bed and run around the room or even out of the house. It is possible during the course of a night terror episode that the person could hurt themselves or others. Children who experience night terrors do not typically need a medical evaluation. However, medical attention should be sought if these episodes cause potentially dangerous behavior, an extreme household disturbance or excessive sleepiness during the day. Because night terrors are relatively uncommon after childhood, adults suffering from this disorder should consult a physician or sleep specialist.

Notes: I promised more . . . here it is, in all its un-beta'd glory. Takes place while they're in the brig on Cortez's ship.
Summary: Miguel gets the promised flogging. For Lib, who said I shouldn't do it; for Kristin, who converted so easily; for Anakin1218, who was here first; for Allaire, who doesn't hate me; for everyone who expressed their enjoyment of the last one, both on and off-list; and for Mr. Boyer, because I love him. "Tulio?" Miguel sat up, abruptly, his vision fuzzy, still clouded by sleep. He had fallen asleep safe in the arms of his lover, had been lulled into slumber by Tulio's breath on his cheek, fingers in his hair. For all his bravado, Miguel was a clingy creature at heart, the type of child who had slept with a stuffed animal until well into his teens. He was a romantic of the truest sort, the kind that could stare for hours at a sunset, or write beautiful poetry about flowers, or other such nonsense. "I'm here," murmured Tulio, shifting beside Miguel. He dragged himself upwards, leaned against the hull of the ship. Miguel whimpered at the loss of Tulio's warmth, and wiggled back into his lover's arms. Tulio chuckled, wrapping his arms around Miguel, holding him tightly, rocking a little. "That's better, huh?" Tulio purred, combing his fingers through Miguel's hair. Miguel sighed and snuggled closer, his head pillowed on Tulio's shoulder, his face in the other man's neck. He slipped his arms around Tulio's thin waist, fitting his body against his lover's.
