Night Terrors
by Sally Reeve and Marcy The first thing Sam noticed as she stepped through the Stargate was the quiet. Despite the trees that surrounded her, the world she had entered was as silent as the grave. "Okay," Jack noted as he moved cautiously down the stone steps, "this is peaceful." "Peaceful like a cemetery," she replied. But he shook his head. "Nah, cemeteries have birds." He squinted up into the pale winter sky, searching it for some sign of life, and then frowning he stalked off to scout the vicinity. "You know," Daniel said as he started pulling their gear from FRED, "for a planet that has two suns this place is cold." Sam smiled, although she couldn't shake her sense of unease. "It's winter," she explained, "which, for this planet, is actually quite rare - usually one of the suns is closer than the other, creating a sort of perpetual spring." "Sounds nice."

What is a night terror?
What is a night terror? Some of questions have answers and some remain a mystery.
First of all, before getting into detail about what this entails, I would like to state a night terror is nothing like a nightmare. This is a common misperception and misdiagnosis for those who dont fully comprehend the situation or what the individual is trying to explain. This is frustrating for those actually experiencing the night terrors because they feel their problem is being slighted and not taken seriously. Have you ever spoken to someone who has gone through a night terror or witnessed an individual actually going through one? Speaking to someone about it first hand is really quite interesting, but witnessing it can be very frightening. More frightening, I might add, for the witness than for the person going through the night terror. While it is more common for the individual not to recall the events, or pieces of the events the next morning, unlike with a nightmare, a surprising few remember every detail. No one really knows for certain why night terrors occur, but it has been determined that they can be manifested in several ways: bodyOffer(30702) - eating too heavy of a meal before bedtime - being over tired at bedtime - certain medications - too much stress Be advised, night terrors are not the sign or result of a psychological disorder. Most often there is nothing significant to become alarmed about. Night terrors are also misdiagnosed for Post Partum Stress Disorder. Anyone who has ever been through or witnessed a night terror will tell you this situation is not even close to that assessment.

What are nightmares?
Nightmares are scary dreams. Most children have them from time to time. One out of every 4 children has nightmares more than once a week. Most nightmares happen very late in the sleep period (usually between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.). Your child may wake up and come to you for comfort. Usually, he or she will be able to tell you what happened in the dream and why it was scary. Your child may have trouble going back to sleep. Your child might have the same dream again on other nights. Return to top
What are night terrors?
Some children have a different kind of scary dream called a "night terror." Night terrors happen during deep sleep (usually between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.). A child having a night terror will often wake up screaming. He or she may be sweating and breathing fast. Your child's pupils (the black center of the eye) may look larger than normal. At this point, your child may still be asleep, with open eyes. He or she will be confused and might not answer when you ask what's wrong. Your child may be difficult to wake. When your child wakes, he or she usually won't remember what happened. Return to top

NIGHT TERRORS
"I think my child is having night terrors." It's the middle of the night and you are awakened by your child screaming from his bedroom. You rush in to see what's wrong and you find him sitting up in bed with a blank stare but very agitated. You try to wake him, asking him what is wrong but he doesn't respond, he just keeps screaming. You are scared and don't know what to do. After a few minutes, your child goes back to sleep and in the morning he doesn't remember the episode. Characteristics of night terrors:
  • Your child seems frightened, but cannot be awakened or consoled.
  • Your child may sit up in bed, or walk around the room, screaming or talking senselessly.
  • Your child doesn't acknowledge you, his eyes may be open but he seems to stare right through you.
  • Objects or persons in the room might be mistaken for dangers.
  • Episodes usually last between 10 and 30 minutes.
  • Usually occur in children 1 to 8 years old.
  • Your child cannot remember the episode in the morning.
  • Usually happens within 2 hours of falling asleep.

Nightmares and Night Terrors
What are night terrors?
A night terror is a partial waking from sleep with behaviors such as screaming, kicking, panic, sleep walking, thrashing, or mumbling. Night terrors usually occur within two hours of the time a child goes to sleep. They are harmless and each episode will end in deep sleep. They are considered normal until age 6. The following are common characteristics of a night terror:
  • Your child is frightened but cannot be awakened or comforted. Your child's eyes are wide open but he/she does not know that you are there. Your child may think objects or persons in the room are scary. The episode lasts from 10 to 30 minutes. Your child often does not remember the episode in the morning.
How to help a child during a night terrors:
  • Try to help your child return to normal sleep. You will not be able to awaken your child, so do not try. Turn on the lights so that your child is less confused by shadows. Make soothing comments. Hold your child if it seems to help him/her feel better. Shaking or shouting at your child may cause the child to become more upset.

Latest News Night Terrors: Nighttime Fight or Flight Response
Night terrors in children are terrifying: both for the child and for the parents. Without any appreciable warning, your child sits up in bed screaming, and then tries to run from a perceived threat. She doesn't respond to your attempts to soothe her, and appears wild-eyed and "possessed." After five to twenty minutes (which seem like forever during the night terror), the child calms and falls asleep. In the morning, she has no clear recollection of the event.
While both adults and children can suffer from the disorder, night terrors in children are far more common. The disorder affects approximately five percent of children, and is most common between the ages of three and five. The disorder is also referred to as sleep terrors.
Nightmares and Night Terrors
Sleep terrors are not, as many people suppose, especially vivid nightmares. Nightmares are vivid, frightening dreams that occur during REM sleep, when dreaming occurs. Upon awakening from a nightmare, your child will be confused and frightened, but will respond to soothing and comfort. The child will probably remember the scary dream in detail.
Night terrors occur during the deepest stages of sleep, when dreaming does not occur. The child rarely remembers the event, although some children have vague recollections of being chased. Night terrors in children produce "fight or flight" responses, and as the child is partially asleep, comforting is often ineffectual.

Recognizing this sleep disorder
and putting parents’ fears to rest.
by Laurie Dove
A 2-year-old boy jolts upright in bed, panicked. Eyes wide, mouth circled in a scream, the terror brings his mother running, only to find she can’t reach her son. He is trapped betwixt and between caught within two layers of his own body’s functioning. His mind is asleep, his body awake. He doesn’t respond to his mother’s touch; he struggles to free himself of her grasp. She can do nothing but watch and wait. It will end, she tells herself. But for this Drifton, Penn. mother, it will soon begin again. Each night, Bobbi Dempsey waits for her son’s screams to pierce the dullness of sleep. Dempsey’s son has a sleeping disorder that plagues more than 200,000 kids night terrors. For parents, night terrors can be frightening to witness. For children who typically have no recollection of the event night terrors are little more than an inconvenience, say experts. ”Every night, my son was screaming and terrified. I thought he had somehow gotten hurt. Sometimes he thought someone was after him. It was a horrible thing to watch him go through,” says Dempsey, who resorted to sleeping on the living room couch with her son so she could be near him and so his screams could be as far as possible from his two brothers.

Parenting home Nightmares and night terrors by Jo Douglas Jo Douglas, author of Toddler Troubles , on what you can do when your child is plagued by nightmares and night terrors Nightmares are bad dreams which occur during the light phase of sleep (rapid-eye-movement sleep), and we have all experienced them. Once children can talk, they are able to describe that they are having bad dreams from about the age of two years. This age also coincides with a surge in the frequency of nightmares that may be linked to the great developmental changes that are occurring at this time. Some nightmares are about specific situations like witches, advertisement crocodiles or nasty people. Others may be about being chased, being hurt or falling. But the main feature is that your child wakes up feeling frightened and can remember what happened in his dream. He needs reassurance and a cuddle and will often go back to sleep with no problem. Nightmares are often triggered by something that happened in the day, events in a story or something seen on television. Night terrors Night terrors are very different from these and occur during deep sleep. Your child may sweat and thrash around in bed or scream. He may have his eyes open and may be waving his arms around, but he is not awake. In the morning he will have no memory of the episode. It is difficult to wake your child up when he is in this state, so it is best just to sit with him until he calms down.

as a good night's sleep. But what do you do when you find your son or daughter is getting up after being tucked into bed, screaming, yelling, and running around the house?
What is this?
A nightmare?
You try to wake her up but it's difficult.
She looks awake and she's agitated and frightened. Once you wake her up she has no memory of the event but is terrified.
Was it a scary dream?
No, she says, she has no recollection of what she was even dreaming about. These sleeping events are called Night Terrors. They are most commonly seen in children who are between 3 and 5 years old. They are both scary for the parent and the child. But believe it or not they are harmless. Most children grow out of them. Two to 3% of all children will experience episodes of night terrors. By the time they reach school age, most of these children will have outgrown these generally harmless events. Night Terrors are very different than nightmares.
