A little bit about this site...
After spending the last 15+ years of my life experiencing night terrors, I decided to find out more about this sleep disorder. I hope the following will help shed some light on the subject. The first thing I found was that this problem goes by a few different names. Sleep Terrors, Sleep Terror Disorder, Night Terrors, Pavor Nocturnus and then the mouthful DSM-IV AXIS I: 307.46 are just a few. This fact made it very difficult to do an internet search for more information. Another problem I ran into was that HSP (Hallucinatory sleep disorder) has some similarities to Night Terrors. I have included information about sleep paralysis to help you figure out which you may have.

Berkeley Parents Network Advice Sleep > Night Terrors From: Janis Our 31 month old son is beginning to experience night terrors. He screams for 45 minutes to an hour and nothing we do can console him. I've read a lot about this but I am hoping some of you might have some practical hints. We cannot leave him in his bed because he shares the bedroom with his brother. When we hold him he thrashes around wildly and usually manages to sock one of us. The same thing happens if we try to bring him to bed with us. I am afraid this is just one of those things we have to ride out but if any of you have had any experience in either avoiding or lessening the severity of these attacks, I would love to hear about it. Thanks. Janis From: Helen From: Roger Janis, Our kids have all suffered from night terrors. They were usually brought on by: a. Change of schedule or routine.
b. being overtired.

It's 10 PM. As your head hits the pillow, a blood-curdling scream from your toddler's bedroom propels you like a shot down the hallway. You find her sitting up in bed. Wide-eyed, she's screaming and flailing her arms. It's one of the scariest things you've ever seen. As you rush to her, you see she doesn't appear hurt or sick. It must be a nightmare, you think. "I'm here," you say as you put your arms around her wriggling body. But the more you try to calm her, the more upset she gets. What's going on?
Most likely, your child is having a night terror - a relatively common occurrence that appears mostly in young children, typically between the ages of 3 to 5 years. Two to 3% of all children will experience episodes of night terrors. By the time they reach school age, most of these children will have outgrown these generally harmless events. "It's frightening but is not unusual or dangerous to a child," says Harry Abram, MD, a pediatric neurologist. "As the brain matures and a child's sleep pattern matures, the terrors go away."

Nature is often obscure or impenetrable, but she is not, like man, deceitful. We must therefore take it that the dream is just what it pretends to be, neither more nor less. If it shows something in a negative light, there is no reason for assuming that it is meant positively.
"On the Psychology of the Unconscious" (1953) More on Night Terrors...
Some things that can help bring out a night terror are stress, certain medications, (It is hard to list exactly which ones) being over-tired or eating a heavy meal before going to bed. Many different medical ailments contribute to the frequency of Night Terrors. (Once again to many and to hard to list, Please do not e-mail me to have one added.) These things DO NOT cause night terrors, they just seem to put your body into the state where a night terror can manifest itself. People without night terrors will not have a night terror because of the above reasons.

Nightmares and Night Terrors: The Horror Movies of the Mind Nicholas L. Borzel Augustana University College A paper submitted to Dr. Jayne Gackenbach as part of the course requirements for Psy 473 (Sleep and Dreams), April, 1997 It is terribly disconcerting to the parent of a child whom experiences a nightmare. You may try to reassure them, but it is usually the problem that you can't even understand them. Our adult instinct is to rationalise; to assure the child of the difference between the fear they feel and the real world. But how helpful is this? First it is useful to understand the nature of nightmares, how they occur, and what they mean. It is also useful to explore the models we can teach our children in order to best help them with this parasomnia. As unsettling as it is to see our children struggle with the fears of a nightmare, imagine a more dynamic form. To see your child awaken soon after sleep has set in and physically experience a terrifying aspect of sleep can be far more disturbing. Night Terrors are a dynamic sleep disorder experienced in the early hours of sleep. To understand this disorder we must first look at how it is different from the more common and less explosive nightmare. In the same way that we understand nightmares we must look at night terrors. By understanding the biological reasons and causes of night terrors we can then understand more about them. This information while useful to parents is not always as reassuring as the methods they can use to help their child return to bed and enjoy a restful night sleep.

  • Don't try to wake your child; she will come out of it and go back to sleep on her own. If your child tries to get out of bed, gently restrain him; he's safer in bed than walking around. Don't panic. Your child may not behave like himself, pushing you away and screaming, but remain calm and ride it out.

      Night Terrors
Getting back to Night Terrors, here is what happens within the body during an episode: the autonomic nervous system is activated, which stimulates feelings of intense fear via the "fight or flight" response. Some people have anxiety attacks on top of this autonomic response mechanism, and/or have asthma attacks as well. If this is a frequent occurance, it might help to keep a good old-fashioned paper bag next to the bed, so you can breathe into it and prevent hyperventilating and resume normal breathing.
      Sleep Chart @ NightTerrors.Org

How often do these Night Terrors occur? It varies. Some people have episodes less than once per month, without harm to themselves or others. Some people experience episodes less than once per week, without harm to themselves or others. In its severest form they occur almost nightly, and/or occur with unintentional physical injury to the person affected, or to others nearby. It would be wise to contact a sleep disorder clinic if you fall into the second or third category, certainly. I have a link to sleep disorders clinics, below.
Here is a description of a sleep disorder usually found in babies or children, but which rarely does afflict adults as well:

    18. Texas Sleep Disorders Center - John D. Seifert M.D.
Treatment of snoring, sleep apnea, insomnia, night terrors, sleep walking, bed wetting and narcolepsy.
    http://Texassleepdisorders.com
At Texas Regional Sleep Disorder Center, our approach to snoring and sleep apnea is comprehensive. Snoring is caused by an obstruction of air while one Is sleeping as it passes through the nose and to the back of the throat, or pharynx. Many times the snoring is not serious enough to cause any physical illness. Other times the snoring is a symptom of a very severe obstruction of breathing and the body has to work to breath to maintain normal bodily functions. If one has sleep apnea, breathing can stop for up to five minutes and during this time, when the breathing has stopped, the pulse increases and the blood pressure increases so as to give emergency needs of oxygen to the body. If this process Is allowed to progress then the individual having this is more prone to permanent high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, leading to stroke and sudden death. Sleep apnea can affect people of all ages. Children get sleep apnea from enlarged tonsils and adenoids. This can happen in a newborn. This is usually manifested in children by fatigue, irritability, and of course, the audible snoring and breathing sensations. Breathing obstruction can be either in the nose or in the oral pharynx. In the nose, it is caused by cartilaginous or bony obstruction of the nasal septum which divides the nose into right and left compartments. It also can be caused by chronic sinusitis when one assumes the recumbent position, the infectious material rolls out of the paranasal sinuses and stops us the nose making one breathe through their mouth. After a period of time, this gasping for air through the mouth causes elongation of the soft palate and uvula, and later the tongue will press against the soft palate and uvula which has been elongated by this sleep apnea process, and breathing will stop.

    NIGHT TERRORS
A night terror is a sleep disturbance that can be very upsetting to parents. When children have night terrors, they usually scream or cry out and appear to be frightened, as if they're reacting to a nightmare. Children having night terrors may appear very frightened. They may sit up in bed, thrash their arms and legs, and seem terrified. Night terrors are often more upsetting to parents than they are to the children who have them. When parents try to calm their children during night terrors, they often find that their children do not seem to recognize them and do not respond to them. This is because children having night terrors are still asleep. Their eyes may be wide open, but in fact they are asleep. Parents often confuse night terrors with nightmares, when in fact they are very different. Night terrors are less common than nightmares. Unlike nightmares, night terrors take place during very deep sleep and generally occur during the first four hours of sleep. Though they are rare, they most often occur around the ages of four and five, and they usually stop around eight years of age. Night terrors are not usually considered to be dangerous or to be a cause for concern. It is not presently known why children have night terrors, but they do tend to run in families. They are not believed to be related to stresses or problems in everyday life that children may have. They are usually not upsetting to children, because they don't remember the night terror the next day, and do not wake up while they are having them. Most often the children having night terrors return to quiet sleep within a short period of time.

    night terrors
Night terrors (or sleep terrors) are episodes of screaming and agitation in the middle of the night, generally in toddlers and sometimes preschoolers. They are probably best understood as a variation of sleep walking . They are technically classified as one of the parasomnias, disorders of arousal including sleep walking, sleep talking, and perhaps enuresis Differentiating a night terror from a nightmare depends upon a couple of factors. First is the time of the attack. Night terrors, since they are disorders of arousal from the deepest sleep, occur typically in the first part of the night - certainly the first half and usually just a few hours after bedtime. A nightmare - a particularly vivid and scary dream - tends to occur towards the end of the night - in the early morning hours. When a child has a night terror, he can be aroused from it only with great difficulty, if at all. He may have his eyes open, but will "look right through you" as if not seeing you - and he does not. When a child has awakened screaming from a nightmare, he is indeed awake and will cling to you for comfort. Like sleepwalking and sleeptalking (the more benign form of night activity that often persists into adulthood), it is a
