NEUTROPENIA: A SERIOUS AND FREQUENT CHEMOTHERAPY SIDE EFFECT
Many cancer patients worry about possible side effects of chemotherapy. A Roper Starch survey of chemotherapy patients found that, prior to starting treatment, 32 percent reported surviving cancer as their biggest concern versus 40 percent who said side effects were their biggest concern.
This concern is warranted, as about half of cancer chemotherapy patients develop a condition called neutropenia (new-tro-pee-nee-uh) i that can place them at risk for life-threatening infections. Infections may require hospitalization and can delay chemotherapy treatment and reduce its effectiveness.
What is neutropenia? Neutropenia is a severe drop in infection-fighting white blood cells (neutrophils). A common side effect of some kinds of chemotherapy, neutropenia is serious because:
  • Thousands of patients are hospitalized for neutropenia each year. This in an age when many cancer patients receive chemotherapy treatment as outpatients. The majority of patients with certain tumors who develop neutropenia will either have their chemotherapy postponed or their dose decreased, both of which can reduce survival rates.

Neutropenia Format for Printing Neutropenia is an abnormal decrease in white blood cells most often resulting from a viral infection or exposure to certain drugs or chemicals. According to the Neutropenia Support Association Incorporated, up to one third of patients who receive chemotherapy (the use of anti-cancer drugs to treat cancer) become neutropenic. The most common side effect of neutropenia is high fever. Patients whose body temperature rises above 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit while undergoing chemotherapy are encouraged to contact their physicians immediately to avoid potentially life-threatening effects of neutropenia. Main Menu: How Can Breast Cancer Patients Get Neutropenia? For many breast cancer patients, chemotherapy is administered with or without breast surgery or other treatments to kill cancerous cells. Because chemotherapy is a systemic treatment, the drugs travel throughout the body to target cancer cells that may have spread past the breast. The human body is made up of red and white blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the lungs and different parts of the body while white blood cells protect the body from infection. Neutrophils, one common group of white blood cell produced in the bone marrow, divide and multiply quickly just like cancer cells. Since chemotherapy drugs aim for cancer cells with a high rate of reproduction, many of these neutrophils are also destroyed during treatment, resulting in neutropenia. Neutropenia is defined as a sharp reduction of neutrophils.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Neutropenia is a condition where the blood contains too few neutrophil granulocytes (a type of white blood cell The most common cause of neutropenia is decreased production in the bone marrow , which can be caused by hereditary disorders cancer , certain medications, radiation, and B or folate deficiency. It may be an acute or a long-standing condition. Neutropenia can also be caused by increased destruction of white blood cells . This can occur in severe infection and in some autoimmune disorders such as HIV infection. A third type of neutropenia is caused by sequestration and margination of white blood cells. This is seen in hemodialysis Cyclical neutropenia is when the number of neutrophils in the blood vary over time in a cyclical manner. The period is generally from 3-4 weeks, and is unrelated to the menstrual cycle in women. There is usually a mild neutropenia in viral infections Neutropenia may also just be part of a general pancytopenia , where all the blood's cells are low in number. edit

Definition
Neutropenia is an abnormally low level of neutrophils in the blood. Neutrophils are white blood cells (WBCs) produced in the bone marrow that ingest bacteria. Neutropenia is sometimes called agranulocytosis or granulocytopenia because neutrophils make up about 60% of WBCs and have granules inside their cell walls. Neutropenia is a serious disorder because it makes the body vulnerable to bacterial and fungal infections.
Description
The normal level of neutrophils in human blood varies slightly by age and race. Infants have lower counts than older children and adults, and African Americans have lower counts than Caucasians or Asians. The average adult level is 1500 cells/mm of blood. Neutrophil counts (in cells/mm ) are interpreted as follows:
  • greater than 1000. Normal protection against infection.
  • 500-1000. Some increased risk of infection.
  • 200-500. Great risk of severe infection.
  • lower than 200. Risk of overwhelming infection; requires hospital treatment with antibiotics
Causes and symptoms
Causes Neutropenia may result from three processes: DECREASED WBC PRODUCTION Lowered production of white blood cells is the most common cause of neutropenia. It can result from:

Neutropenia
by Dr. Saul Greenberg
What is it?
Neutropenia is an abnormally low number of neutrophils in the blood. Neutrophils serve as the major defense of the body against acute bacterial and certain fungal infections. Neutrophils usually constitute about 45 to 75% of all white blood cells in the bloodstream. When the neutrophil count falls below 1,000 cells per microliter of blood, the risk of infection increases somewhat; when it falls below 500 cells per microliter, the risk of infection increases greatly. Without the key defense provided by neutrophils, a person has problems controlling infections and is at risk of dying from an infection.
What Causes it?
Neutropenia can develop for different reasons:
1) if the production of neutrophils in the bone marrow is reduced
2) if neutrophils are used up or destroyed in the bloodstream faster than the bone marrow can
make new ones.
3) as a hereditary disease 1) Reduced production of neutrophils in the bone marrow can occur in some people with cancer, viral infections such as influenza, bacterial infections such as tuberculosis, or deficiencies of vitamin B or folic acid. People who have received radiation therapy that involves the bone marrow may also develop neutropenia. Many drugs, including phenytoin, chloramphenicol, sulfa drugs, and many drugs used in cancer treatment (chemotherapy), as well as certain toxins (benzene and insecticides) can also impair the bone marrow's ability to produce neutrophils.Production of neutrophils in the bone marrow is also affected by a severe disorder called aplastic anemia, in which the bone marrow may shut down production of all blood cells.

On leukemia, chemotherapy, and moving on with the rest of your life. Main Induction Neutropenia A couple of definitions are in order, courtesy a medical dictionary at Teens Living With Cancer Neutropenia : Less than the normal number of neutrophils (leukocytes) or "polys" in the circulating blood.
Polys (neutrophils or granulocytes) : The group of white cells that is important to your ability to resist bacterial infection. A "poly" count of less than 1,000 indicates less than normal protection and considerable risk of infection. Everything has been low, okay, blood counts, platelets, polys, red blood cells, white blood cells, weight, energy, whatever. You name it, I didn't have enough of it. Nature of the beast. We're getting technical, though, learning new words all the time. This isn't just throwing all the medicine available at me hoping some of it sticks. There is science involved, here, culled from decades of research. That's why we notice when things change. It's not an obvious shift, but it does mark a difference in how we'll need to approach my treatment. Details matter. Precision matters. We're all about numbers these days, watching the steady drop of so many different counts. We watch my polys closely. They're a leading indicator. When they dropped low enough, they announced that I'd become neutropenic. A colored sign was placed outside my door probably red to remind everybody coming in that they would need to take extra precautions. It's a simple thing: when I'm neutropenic, my body will not be able to fight infections by itself. I'll need lots of help to keep any infections at bay in the first place, but even more help, in case I happen to get an infection somewhere, to actually get rid of it.

Neutropenia
What is neutropenia?
Neutropenia is an abnormal decrease in white blood cells (neutrophils). White blood cells protect the body from infection. People with neutropenia tend to develop infections easily because their white blood cell count is too low to fight off germs, such as bacteria. Most of these infections occur in the lungs, mouth, throat, sinuses, and skin. Some people get gum infections, ear infections, or infections of the urinary tract, colon, rectum, or reproductive tract.
