Thimerosal Containing Vaccines and Neurodevelopmental Disorders
Overview
Last year, the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health asked the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to establish an independent expert committee to review hypotheses about existing immunization safety concerns. The first report on MMR vaccine and autism was issued last April. Today the IOM released its second report on thimerosal and neurodevelopmental outcomes. The PHS welcomes today’s IOM report as a helpful contribution to the complex scientific and policy issues regarding the use of thimerosal in vaccines. Given these challenges, the PHS is most grateful to the individual scientists on the IOM Committee and IOM staff members for their dedicated and valuable service to the continued integrity of our national immunization system. The IOM Immunization Safety Review Committee’s most important conclusions were 1) that the evidence is inadequate to accept or reject a causal relationship between exposure to thimerosal from vaccines and the neurodevelopmental disorders of autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and speech or language delay, and 2) that although the hypothesis that exposure to thimerosal-containing vaccines could be associated with neurodevelopmental disorders is not established and rests on indirect and incomplete information, primarily from analogies with methlmercury and levels of maximum mecrury exposure from vaccines given in children, the hyposthesis is biologically plausible.

Epidemiological evidence demonstrates that a variety of conditions may be considered as neurodevelopmental disorders. Schizophrenia, manic-depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, Aspberger's syndrome, dyslexia, dyspraxia and possible some allergic conditions may all be included. These diagnoses are not discrete, there being much overlap, for example (reproduction by kind permission of Dr. Alex Richardson): Why these connections?

There are also many errorswith regard to factual information and little cohesiveness inbringing together research findings. Some of the real pioneersin neuropsychological research have been omitted. The book has more typos than any text I've ever purchased and includes some important inaccuracies (e.g., Prozac is referred to as an MAOI). Despite these things, the book provides some good general information, but the reader certainly gets the sense that the book was hurriedly thrown together without a good proofread, first. This book was a nice overview of pediatric neuropsychology, but I found it quite shallow in terms of practical information. I found myself thinking "yeah, I know all that, now get to the meat." A nice start for the beginner, but don't buy this thinking that you will get details of how to actually do pediatric neuropsychology.

Mothering
March-April, 2001 by Rick Rollens
The MIND (Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders) Institute at the University of California-Davis Medical Center is dedicated to finding the causes of autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders and developing effective treatments and cures. It was founded in 1998 by four Sacramento, California, fathers of children with regressive autism, who believed that the level of autism research and clinical and educational services for children with autism left much to be desired. In little more than two years, the MIND Institute has raised over $40 million, making it the largest autism research institute in the world. It was the first independent research institute to solicit research proposals on the role of vaccines in the development of autism. For the first time in history, millions of dollars are being used to fund independent science, free of the influence of the "vaccinate at all costs" public health community and vaccine manufacturers, into the relationship of vaccines and autism. The institute is also undertaking an epidemiological study into the factors underlying California's 502 percent increase in autism over the past 13 years.

ABBREVIATIONS. FAS, fetal alcohol syndrome; ARND, alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder; ARBD, alcohol-related birth defects. The term fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) refers to a constellation of physical, behavioral, and cognitive abnormalities.[1] In addition to the classic dysmorphic facial features, prenatal and postnatal growth abnormalities, and mental retardation that define the condition, approximately 80% of children with FAS have microcephaly and behavioral abnormalities.[2] As many as 50% of affected children also exhibit poor coordination, hypotonia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, decreased adipose tissue, and identifiable facial anomalies, such as maxillary hypoplasia, cleft palate, and micrognathia. Cardiac defects, hemangiomas, and eye or ear abnormalities are also common.[3-5] [Figure 1 ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] None of the persons in the aforementioned study had achieved age-appropriate socialization or communication skills. Maladaptive social functioning was evidenced by their failure to consider consequences for their actions, lack of response to appropriate social cues, lack of reciprocal friendships, social withdrawal, sullenness, mood lability, teasing and bullying behavior, and periods of high anxiety and excessive unhappiness. Secondary disabilities, such as mental health problems, chemical dependency, failure to develop appropriate sexual behavior, and consequent legal problems, were also common in adults diagnosed with FAS. Current evidence suggests that while IQ scores [is less than] 70 in this population increase the likelihood of such outcomes, early diagnosis and intervention may reduce the occurrence of secondary disabilities.[9]

Immunization Safety Review: Thimerosal-Containing Vaccines and Neurodevelopmental Disorders
The Immunization Safety Review Committee of the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine released their review of thimerosal-containing vaccines. This report is based on the committee's review of medical literature, consideration of presentations and comments from an open meeting on July 16, 2001 in Boston, and other submitted materials. The complete report is available on the Institute of Medicine website . (Click on Read it Online - FREE! on the left side of the page) Committee Recommendations and Conclusions Conclusions The committee concludes that although the hypothesis that exposure to thimerosal-containing vaccines could be associated with neurodevelopmental disorders is not established and rests on indirect and incomplete information, primarily from analogies with methylmercury and levels of maximum mercury exposure from vaccines given in children, the hypothesis is biologically plausible. The committee also concludes that the evidence is inadequate to accept or reject a causal relationship between thimerosal exposures from childhood vaccines and the neurodevelopmental disorders of autism, ADHD, and speech or language delay.
