Neuralgia
Nerves conduct the sense of touch to the brain, so when they are irritated, the pain can be excruciating. Pain characterizes all kinds of neuralgia. Typical nerve pains are severe, shooting or recurring attacks. They are brought on by movement or just occur on their own. The skin is overly sensitive to the least cold, drafts or slightest touch, as the nerves affected lie close to the skin's surface. In some cases, the nerve throbs or burns with pain. Tingling and numbness signal the start of a neuralgia attack, though this is often indicative of other nerve problems like neuritis or polyneuropathy The severe type of nerve pain is characteristic of trigeminal neuralgia, which typically affects one side of the face in the cheek area. Swelling and redness often occur with the pain. This type of neuralgia can begin as a sensitive tooth before it becomes full-blown neuralgia. Trigeminal neuralgia usually occurs once, but many people are troubled with recurring attacks. Trigeminal neuralgia occurs exclusively in middle-aged and elderly patients. Some experience nerve pain in the throat and in the in the scrotum in men or the labia in women, though these types are rare. Neuralgias can also occur after a nerve has been injured. In amputees, this is known as phantom limb pain, though it can occur after virtually any kind of surgery or from a severe bout of

NEURALGIAS
Neuralgia means burning, numbness, and pain that extends along one or more nerves. A nerve is a cord-like bundle of fibers through which sensation and motor impulses pass between the brain and the body. Because nerve fibers are found throughout the body neuralgia may occur in any nerve. Neuralgia or neuropathic pain is caused by injury, irritation or deterioration of nerves. Neuralgias can occur as a result of: * inflammation * infections such as herpes, malaria or syphilis * surgery * nerve compression from tumors * irritation of spinal nerves * vitamin B-12 deficiency * deterioration of the nerves due to aging or hereditary conditions * brain injury such a stroke and * diseases such as diabetes, thyroid conditions, pernicious anemia, and shingles Neuralgia pain feels different from most other types of pain. It is often described as sharp, knifelike, stabbing, or burning. The pain tends to be constant. A person may experience: * cluster headaches * pain radiating through the face or jaw * pain at the back of head, in the feet, and in the throat or tongue and

The pain which occurs with Shingles [herpes zoster] may subside or clear as the skin lesions heal. When the pain continues after healing of the skin lesions the condition is called Post Herpetic Neuralgias [PHN], and may last for months, years and sometimes for life. Signs + Symptoms:
The pain from these conditions shows in several forms and one or all may be present: -Steady burning pain -Intermittent sharp stabbing pain -Mild to severe itching -General feelings of fatigue Diagnosis:
Done usually by examination, which will show scarring from healed blisters. Also, increased sensitivity over the affected area. Treatment: -Antiviral drugs -Epidural or nerve blocks -Antidepressants -Anticonvulsant -Anti Inflammatory -Somatic topical treatment (compresses and Calamine lotion)

Sra. G.F.

    Neuralgias
Definition: Pains which follow the paths of specific nerves.
Alternative Names: Nerve pain; Postherpetic neuralgia
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The causes of neuralgias are varied. Chemicals can cause nerve irritation. Inflammation, trauma (including surgery), compression by adjacent structures (tumors or inflamed tissues), and infections can all lead to neuralgias. In many cases, however, the cause is unknown or unidentifiable. Neuralgias are most common in elderly persons, but they can occur at any age.
    Trigeminal neuralgia
is the most common form of neuralgia. It affects the main sensory nerve of the face, the trigeminal nerve ("trigeminal" literally means "three origins", referring to the division of the nerve into three branches). This condition involves sudden and short attacks of severe pain on one side of the face, along one of the areas supplied by the trigeminal nerve. The pain attacks may be severe enough to cause a facial grimace, which is classically referred to as a painful tic (tic douloureux).

    Neuralgias
Neuralgia means burning, numbness, and pain that extends along one or more nerves. A nerve is a cord-like bundle of fibers through which sensation and motor impulses pass between the brain and the body. Neuralgia may occur in any nerve. There are several disorders in which this kind of pain keeps coming back. These major disorders include:
    • cluster headaches pain radiating through the face, or jaw pain at the back of head, in the feet, and in the throat or tongue and sciatica, which affects the lower back, buttocks, and legs
Some of the possible CAUSES of neuralgia include:
    • vitamin B-12 deficiency chronic diseases such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis infectious diseases such as herpes, malaria, and syphilis and tumors
Attacks of pain often occur suddenly. There may be long periods between attacks. A person may suffer from anxiety and fear of the next attack. ATTACKS MAY BE BROUGHT ON BY MINOR THINGS, SUCH AS:
    • irritation of the area heat or cold or drinking something hot or cold
Medicines may be given to relieve the pain. Control of any underlying condition (such as diabetes) will help prevent progression. Drugs to prevent flare-ups may be helpful. When medical measures fail, surgery may be considered to remove the root of the nerve. These include electrosurgery, microsurgery, and radio wave surgery. After surgery, the affected area will lose the pain and its sense of touch. The patient must be very careful to watch for future physical problems that are usually signaled by pain, such as:

Neuralgias Occipital Neuralgia: This condition is believed to be due to irritation to the main sensory nerve in the back of the head; (that which supplies all of the skin and pain sensitive structures in the upper neck and back of skull). It is believed that this irritation may be caused by tightness in the muscles, joints or ligaments of the upper neck, thereby putting pressure on the nerve itself and causing it to become irritable and painful. Neck injuries, postural strain, and viral infections are amongst a number of other potential causes of irritation to this nerve. The pain has been described as a continuous aching/throbbing in the base of the skull, and back of head, with occasional referral (pain travelling) into the forehead/face regions. Occipital neuralgia- like most other types of headpain; needs to properly diagnosed, and all causes identified. Treatment of this condition should be aimed at eliminating causes through the appropriate therapies/advice/medications, and allowing nerve irritation to subside. Serious causes should always be excluded through professional examination and diagnosis.
