Dictionary Definition of Narcissistic personality disorder

Narcissism is the pattern of traits and behaviors which involve infatuation and obsession with one's self to the exclusion of others and the egotistic and ruthless pursuit of one's gratification, dominance and ambition. Psychologists and psychiatrists believe all individuals have, out of need for survival, a certain amount of egoism and self-centeredness, which ideally takes the form of healthy self-esteem and self-confidence. However, individuals who have excessive, unhealthy amounts of these traits are considered narcissistic. In addition to exaggerated self-esteem, narcissists are also characterized by a lack of empathy , that is, a lack of sensitivity to the feelings of others. The term narcissism was coined by Sigmund Freud , who named the phenomenon after the figure of Narcissus in Greek mythology . Narcissus was a handsome Greek youth who rejected the desperate advances of the nymph Echo. As a punishment, he was doomed to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Unable to consummate his love, Narcissus pined away and changed into the flower that bears his name. Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide")

Narcissistic Personality Disorder By Jef Gazley, M.S. If parents abandon the child he will stay in this psychological state of neediness and if parents or the world spoil them then the child does not get the idea that other people are real people and remain semi-objects. There are numerous kinds of personality disorders, but they all share this development with only a few differences. Any kind of abandonment or abuse makes the development less healthy.

Narcissism: A Genetic Trait
NPA Theory of Personality Types Based on Mendelian Genetics
Summary
NPA Personality Theory
The NPA theory of personality was developed by the author on the basis of concepts presented over fifty years ago by psychiatrist Karen Horney. The theory posits three major behavioral traits underlying personality: Narcissism (N), Perfectionism (P) and Aggression (A), leading to the formulation of discrete character types. Each trait is based on a major pleiotropic gene (a gene determining several related characteristics) that follows the rules of Mendelian genetics. The mode of transmission of the traits was deduced from archetypal family pedigrees. The traits N and A were found to be high frequency recessive, with P being dominant.
The theory proposes that the natural character traits A and N are indispensable to human development, being related to the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, respectively. Our interpretation of the three traits is as follows:
Aggression (A) The trait of aggression is observed to be the most labile of the three. The stereotypic acts associated with this trait involve body posturing, gestures and eye contact of intimidation and deference, with individuals having this trait continually competing with each other on a scale of dominance and submission. The trait corresponds to a striving for

Narcissistic Personality: Functional and Structural Domain Descriptions Because Personality Disorders are disorders of the entire matrix of the person, their assessment intrinsically requires operational attributes sampled from all important domains of personality. Behavioral Level: (F) Expressively Haughty (e.g., acts in an arrogant, supercilious, pompous, and disdainful manner, flouting conventional rules of shared social living, viewing them as naive or inapplicable to self; reveals a careless disregard for personal integrity and a self-important indifference to the rights of others). (F) Interpersonally Exploitive (e.g., feels entitled, is unempathic and expects special favors without assuming reciprocal responsibilities; shamelessly takes others for granted and uses them to enhance self and indulge desires). Phenomenological Level: (F) Cognitively Expansive (e.g., has an undisciplined imagination and exhibits a preoccupation with immature and self-glorifying fantasies of success, beauty or love; is minimally constrained by objective reality, takes liberties with facts and often lies to redeem self-illusions). (S) Admirable Self-Image (e.g., believes self to be meritorious, special, if not unique, deserving of great admiration, and acting in a grandiose or self-assured manner, often without commensurate achievements; has a sense of high self-worth, despite being seen by others as egotistic, inconsiderate, and arrogant).
