NAIL PATELLA SYNDROME The Nail Patella Syndrome (NPS), or hereditary onycho-osteodysplasia (HOOD) is an autosomal dominant, pleiotropic disorder with features suggestive of a primary defect of connective tissue. Manifestations include dysplastic nails, absent or hypoplastic patellae, exostoses ("horns") of the ilia, dysplasia of the elbows, and, in some cases, nephropathy. Although first recognized as an inherited disorder in 1897, it was only with the identification of the gene in 1998 that it became clear that NPS is a disorder of dorso-ventral patterning (at least as it affects the limbs).
