Drugs Used for Symptoms Associated with Transverse Myelitis
All the drugs suggested here are extremely harmful. Once you start down this path, you are into death by prescription. Transverse Myelitis is a rare inflammatory disease involving both sides of the spinal cord. The Transverse Myelitis Association was established in 1994 as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advocacy for those who have the TM diagnosis. Mission The Transverse Myelitis Association facilitates support and networking opportunities amongst TM families; provides educational information; functions as a clearinghouse for articles and research literature about the TM diagnosis; and investigates, advocates for and supports research and innovative treatment efforts. Programs The TMA publishes a newsletter for our members twice a year, which contains articles by physicians and health care providers who treat persons with TM. There are also articles written by people with TM. A membership directory is published and distributed annually. The TMA assists in the development of local support groups and is involved in various fund-raising efforts, such as Reading for Rachel, to raise awareness and funds for TM research. The TMA supports and conducts various symposiums and workshops involving both professionals and patients for the exchange of information regarding TM research and treatment strategies for persons with TM.

Rossi Submitted to the Interdisciplinary Studies Program College of Lifelong Learning Wayne State University Detroit, Michigan In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of BACHELOR OF INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES July, 2002 Approved by: Senior Essay Advisor: Moti Nissani, Ph.D. July 24, 2002 Senior Essay Examiner: Lisa Barno, M.D July 27, 2002 Senior Essay Examiner: Andre Furtado, Ph.D. July 24, 2002 PREFACE What would happen if you woke up one day and found out that some of your most cherished beliefs were wrong? If you found out that the things that, until now, gave comfort and meaning to your life, lacked integrity? If what you felt to be safe now proved to be dangerous? If the people you counted on for help had no answers? All preliminary tests were negative except for the nerve conduction studies, which showed only a slightly delayed response in my right tibial nerve. These studies were the only clinical evidence of my deteriorating condition. After a battery of additional tests, by process of elimination, I was at long last, after more than two months, given the diagnosis of Transverse Myelitis with unsatisfactory, even harmful, treatment options and an uncertain prognosis. As my condition worsened, I learned that the doctors, my faithful doctors for 27 years, could not help me. This was particularly poignant because, I, myself, had naïve ambitions of one day being the type of doctor who could and would help anyone who knocked on my door. The laborious process of diagnosis and the endless arrays of diagnostic tests further discouraged me and deepened my despair.

Questions in The Neurology Forum are being answered by doctors from
The Cleveland Clinic , consistently ranked one of the best hospitals in America. Subject: Acute Transverse Myelitis or GBS?
Topic Area: Guillain Barre Syndrome
Forum: The Neurology and Neurosurgery Forum
Question Posted By: Jen Schiller on Wednesday, March 25, 1998
How do neurologists distinguish between the symptoms/test results of acute transverse myelitis as opposed to the acute onst of GBS? What "pictures" should the MRI's, spinal tap or EMG show to distinguish between the two? What about the presence or absence of deep tendon reflexes or Babinsky sign? Can GBS spinal tap results also have high cell count as well as high protein count? What if parasthesias were in the back, not the legs? I really appreciate all the info this BB has provided, although often it has led to other questions? The doctors who respond have been great!
In comparing the two conditions it may be less obvious in the early stages
of Transverse myelitis but as the process evolves things become more clear cut.
Reflexes : Brisk in transverse myelitis, absent in GBS

Vol. 2, Article 3 Hart et al. Transverse Myelitis Myelitis is an uncommon but well-described complication of SLE. It can be a presenting sign of SLE. The rapid clinical deterioration and imaging findings of edema within the spinal cord are similar to those seen in transverse myelitis of other etiologies. Outcome varies, with about half of SLE cases of transverse myelitis reported to have complete recovery, 30% with partial recovery, and 20% with no recovery (4). A. B. C. Figure 6. Myelitis in SLE. A woman in her late 30s present with acute onset paraplegia 6 years after the diagnosis of SLE. She was treated with cyclophosphamide and corticosteroids but failed to regain any significant lower extremity motor function. Sagittal T1-weighted image (A) is unremarkable. After intravenous gadolinium administration, sagittal T1-weighted image (B) shows enhancement in the lower thoracic spinal cord (arrow). Corresponding high signal intensity is seen on the sagittal T2-weighted image (C). Focal White Matter Lesions Small areas of T2 prolongation in cerebral white matter are common in SLE. The correlation with clinical signs and symptoms of CNS disease is unclear (5). Most likely these are related to chronic changes in the brain rather than an acute event. However, in the patient with an acute presentation, diffusion-weighted imaging can be very helpful in distinguishing small, acute infarcts from chronic changes. The pathologic basis of these white matter lesions is also unclear. These are not usually due to an underlying vasculitis. Despite SLE often being included in lists of cerebral vasculitides, few SLE patients have true vasculitis. Rather, SLE is often accompanied by a bland, small vessel vasculopathy. In our experience, small areas of T2 hyperintensity are very common in SLE patients and are most often seen in subcortical white matter.

It is an outgrowth of glial cells: Schwann cells supply the myelin for peripheral neurons while oligodendrocytes supply it to those of the central nervous system. The main consequence of a myelin layer (or sheath ) is an increase in the speed at which impulses propagate along the myelinated fiber. Along

Home Myelitis DESCRIPTION Inflammation of the spinal cord. The condition may arise from bacterial or viral infection and is sometimes seen in people with a history of multiple sclerosis or syphilis. Main tpes of myelitis:
  • Transverse Myelitis happens when swelling causes the obstruction of blood vessels and loss of the fatty tissue around the nerves. Ascending Myelitis is marked by progressive paralysis with gradual loss of feeling. Disseminated Myelitis results from more than one spinal cord injury.
The most common type of lesion is an acute transverse myelitis which affects a complete cross section of the spinal cord with resultant paralysis below that level. Recovery is usually spontaneous but in a number of cases there may be residual disability. SYNONYMS N/A SYMPTOMS Symptoms may include pain, loss of coordination, followed by gradual paralysis (from the site of the myelitis down the spinal cord), and other physical complaints like bowel and bladder malfunctions. Symptoms may appear gradually or there may be no symptoms at all.

Acute Schistosomiasis with Transverse Myelitis in American Students Returning from Kenya
In early May 1984, CDC received reports that 15 (83%) of 18 American students participating in a travel/study program in Kenya had acquired Schistosoma mansoni infections. Two of these students developed flaccid paraplegia. Although data are incomplete on all 18 students, no unusual attributes could be identified in these two students that might explain why their infections were associated with severe neurologic disease. General background information and the case histories of these students follow. All 18 students arrived in Kenya on February 13, 1984. From March 5 to March 25, they shared housing in the Machakos district. To provide a place for bathing, the students dammed a small stream; two of the infected students recalled experiencing an itchy rash shortly after bathing at this site. Subsequently, the group separated, as the students took individual assignments in various regions of the country. Between April 26 and May 12, 14 of the 15 infected individuals became acutely ill with fever, diarrhea, malaise, and weight loss. On evaluation in the United States, the student had no rash, fever, lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, or point tenderness on palpation of the spinal column. Neurologic examination revealed a flaccid paraplegia at and below the level of T-10. There was marked sensory loss, including loss of vibratory sensation. Superficial and deep tendon reflexes could not be elicited.
