71. MYCOPLASMAL INFECTIONS IN CHRONIC ILLNESS
mycoplasmal INFECTIONS IN CHRONIC ILLNESS. People with the illness were more than seven times more likely to have mycoplasmal infections, said Nicolson.
http://www.rheumatic.org/nichol.htm
MYCOPLASMAL INFECTIONS IN CHRONIC ILLNESS The Medical Sentinel is the official peer-reviewed journal of the Association of American Physicans and Surgeons. The Sept./Oct. 1999 issue contains an article by Garth Nicolson entitled "Mycoplasmal Infections in Chronic Illnesses: Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndromes, Gulf War Illness, HIV-AIDS and Rheumatoid Arthritis. The citation is vol. 4, no. 5, pgs. 172-75 with references continued on pg. 192. The publisher sent out a press release embargoed for release today, Monday, Aug. 31 at 12:01 AM Eastern. The press release is entitled "Bacteria Tied to Chronic Illness" by Dan Vergano, correspondent for the Medical Tribune. Here it is: Slow growing infections may cause or promote a host of chronic illnesses, including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia Syndrome and Gulf War Syndrome, according to one team of researchers. "We've found a large subset of various chronic illnesses are associated with infection," said Prof. Garth L. Nicolson of the Institute for Molecular Medicine in Huntington Beach, Calif. Specifically, infections caused by primitive bacteria known as mycoplasms, he added. Symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, soreness, joint pain and others overlap across many chronic illnesses, he noted. And patients with these ailments have few treatment options because of limited understanding about the cause of their signs and symptoms. In a study prublished in the Monday edition of the journal Medical Sentinel, the official, peer-reviewed journal of the Association of American Physicians and surgeions, Nocolson and his colleagues lay out the case for mycoplasmas as one of the culprits behind Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia Syndrome, Gulf War Syndrome and Rheumatoid Arthritis. In one study on 203 Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients, around 70 percent had mycoplasma DNA in their bloodstream, indicating the presence of mycoplasmas. In contrast, only nine percent of 70 healthy individuals he compared them to carried such signs.

Mycoplasma Mastitis Identified in Michigan Dairy Herds Philip Sears
Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences Michigan Dairy Review 1(3):16, August, 1996. Fortunately, mastitis due to Mycoplasma species has not been a major problem in Michigan. In the last few months, however, the Michigan State University-Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory (AHDL) has isolated Mycoplasma bovis from joints and inner ear infections of young calves and milk from cows with clinical mastitis in several Michigan dairy farms. Mycoplasmal mastitis is characterized by:
1. an increase in the number of severe clinical mastitis cases that are unresponsive to treatment;
2. involvement of more than one quarter of the mammary gland;
3. a marked decrease in the milk production of affected cows; and,
4. abnormal udder secretions that may vary from watery milk with a few clots to a thick colostrum-like material. Cows chronically-infected with Mycoplasma bovis may show a tannish-colored secretion with sandy or flaky sediments that resembles cooked cereal in a whey-like fluid.

Yesterday I decided to spend the day was resting on my screen porch while doing my first weekend of the Cornell University winter bird count, since I had gotten up at 5:00 A.M. that morning to see the Leonids. I decided to read my new addition of Living Bird which featured an article on Mycoplasmal Conjunctivitis in House Finches. While I was reading the article a house finch came to my tube feeder. As I put the binoculars on it I noticed an infected eye. The article I was reading mainly focused on surveys done between 1994 and 1997. I had several infected finches in 1996. I didn't see many after that until this year. About a month ago the numbers at my feeders started to decline again. I was wondering if this disease was still prevalent in the Carolinas. I have not heard much about it in several years. As anyone else seen diseased finches recently? Linda Sharp Greenville, SC nljsharp@worldnet.att.net

A majority of Autism patients have systemic bacterial, viral and fungal infections that may play an important part in their illnesses. We found that immediate family members of veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Illnesses (GWI) often complain of fatiguing illnesses, and upon analysis they report similar signs and symptoms as their veteran family members, except that their children are often diagnosed with Autism. Since a relatively common finding in GWI patients is a bacterial infection due to Mycoplasma fermentans , we examined military families (149 patients: 42 veterans, 40 spouses, 32 other relatives and 35 children with at least one family complaint of illness) selected from a group of 110 veterans with GWI who tested positive (~42%) for mycoplasmal infections. Consistent with previous results, over 80% of GWI patients who were positive for blood mycoplasmal infections had only one

http://idsc.nih.go.jp/iasr/19/216/tpc216.html
The Topic of This Month Vol.19 No.2(No.216) Mycoplasmal pneumonia Atypical pneumonia is a term contrary in meaning to typical bacterial pneumonia and implicated in the concept of nonbacterial pneumonia, showing a feature of transient pulmonary infiltration in an X-ray photograph of the chest. Although the proportion differs from report to report, usually 30-40% and about 60% of atypical pneumonia cases during an epidemic period are caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae . Adenoviruses or chlamydiae besides M. pneumoniae are also implicated. Mycoplasma is the smallest self-replicating microorganism. The organism shows polymorphism because of the lack of the cell wall and is insensitive to such inhibitors of cell wall synthesis as penicillin and cephem antibiotics. Seven species of Mycoplasma are frequently isolated from human sources, but only one of these species, M. pneumoniae , has proved to be pathogenic, causing upper respiratory tract infection, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Pneumonia is evoked in 3-5% of cases of M. pneumoniae
