This will be the home page until the CFS/CFIDS name is not used in reference to ME Myalgic Encephalomyelitis , the -opathy debate can begin then.
The term BENIGN MYALGIC ENCEPHALOMYELITIS was first introduced in the UK in 1956 by a former Chief Medical Officer (Sir Donald Acheson) and not by Dr Melvin Ramsay as is sometimes claimed. The word "benign" was used because it was thought at the time that the disorder was not fatal (as poliomyelitis could be, with which it had some similarity), but it was quickly realised by clinicians that ME was not a "benign" condition, as it has such high morbidity (ie. such a lot of suffering and ill-health), so by 1988 clinicians had stopped using the word "benign" and referred to it as ME, the first to do so being Dr Ramsay. However, the ICD still uses the term "benign" in its classification.
MYO relates to muscle MYOSITIS = inflammation of muscle MYALGIA = pain in muscles (pain that is called "myalgic")

Classification Principles provided by the World Health Organisation
On 28th June 2001 Andre L'Hours, the Technical Officer at the
WHO headquarters in Geneva who is responsible for the ICD,
confirmed that it was "unacceptable" if the same disorder had
been included in two places in the ICD-10 and that the same disorder could not be differently categorised under the one WHO banner. When he was informed of what was happening in the UK, he promised to look into the matter. Andre l'Hours confirmed that the ICD classifications are approved by the World Health Assembly and therefore take legal precedence over unapproved modifications made by a WHO Collaborating Centre. On 16th October 2001 , Dr B Saraceno from the WHO provided the following clarification in writing: "I wish to clarify the situation regarding the classification of neurasthenia, fatigue syndrome, post-viral fatigue syndrome and

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis by Anonymous I have just begun medical use of marihuana for myalgic encephalomyelitis/CFS (M.E.). I have more of a sense of well-being, less of that vague pain, less exhaustion, and I seem to sleep better. It's only been 3 days so far. It's the only medicine I dont have to remind myself to take...I find i want another dose on a regular basis. ( the others are nutritional supplements, progesterone cream, and a breathing med). I don't believe it's a "drug habit" but it’s really helping me, and I'm sensitive to its success. I also suspect it's not merely numbing sensation of pain, drugging me to sleep etc, but is actually reducing the pathology causing pain, insomnia etc.

This distressing and often misunderstood condition often responds well to complementary therapies, but following a sensible eating plan is one of the prime considerations in heading towards recovery. So:
Never
  • go for more than 3 hours without eating and don’t eat processed or high sugar ‘comfort’ food, like cakes and chocolate, when you feel you need a boost.

  • Instead:
  • go for wholemeal bread, brown rice, potatoes and pasta to give you more energy.
Eat pulses (lentils and beans) for their vitamin B
Get lots of vitamin C from fruit, salads and vegetables.
    Avoid alcohol and caffeine.

Herbs should stimulate the immune system and act as general tonics. The most useful are:
  • Echinacea Astralagus Ginseng Guarana
  • Aromatherapy herbs may ease aching muscles and help you sleep. Put them in the bath or use for massage. The most beneficial include:
  • Thyme Lemongrass Marjoram Valerian Roman Chamomile
  • Those with ME would also benefit from a daily high dose multi-vitamin and mineral supplement, plus 1g a day of evening primrose oil.

    Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME)
A medical condition effecting the immune and central nervous systems. The cause is not clear, but onset is linked in most cases to an acute infection, although some people experience a slow insidious onset, and there is some evidence implicating various common viruses in the development of the syndrome. It is thought to effect 2-3 per 1000 of the population. Onset can occur at any age, but it is most common in persons aged 20-40 years, and in those whose employment exposes them to infection, such as health professionals.
    What are the symptoms?
The person with ME experiences a disabling, exercise-induced muscle fatigue, muscle pain (myalgia), often severe, a 'flu-like' malaise, an abnormal exhaustion unrelieved by sleep, and various symptoms which indicate a disturbance in brain function (encephalitic symptoms), including loss of concentration and short term memory, dyslexia, nausea, clumsiness and disturbed balance, sensitivity to light and other problems with vision, sensitivity to noise, misjudgement of distance, and sometimes depression, mood swings, and problems with bladder control and bowel disturbance.
The ME Association has information leaflets available which will answer most of your questions about ME. They also have two leaflets: What is ME? and A Guide for Young People.

    Introduction
In strict medical terms, the name chronic fatigue syndrome refers only to a pattern of symptoms (see below). It can't be called a disease because there's no medical test that can link all cases (like the HIV The human immunodeficiency virus HIV ) is a frequently mutating retrovirus that attacks the human immune system and which has been shown to cause acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
    History
HIV was discovered and identified as the agent for AIDS by Luc Montagnier of France. A minority of scientists continue to question the connection between HIV and AIDS and even the very existence of HIV (see AIDS reappraisal).
