General Discussion
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis is thought to be an infectious disorder affecting the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems and the muscles. Major symptoms may include general exhaustion, headache, muscle pain, weakness, and possible mental changes. The exact cause of this disorder is not known, but researchers believe a virus associated with an immune system abnormality may be responsible. Adults are most commonly affected, with more cases seen in females than in males. Epidemics of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis have occurred worldwide, but cases tend to appear sporadically. Symptoms can resolve in a few weeks but may recur at any time. Other cases may persist for many years.

The refrain is echoed in self help books and magazines and adopted by many patients. What are the origins of rest as a treatment, does it work, and what evidence is there on which to base our advice to patients? Chronic fatigue syndromes are not new.

The popular image of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) or myalgic encephalomyeltis (ME) over the past several decades has generally tended to view the condition as being that of a new illness - one that has arisen in the 20th century. This image has been reinforced by the media and some of the popular (and professional) literature on the condition, with headlines and titles such as " ME - The New Plague ." So is the illness that new? Despite this popular belief, it would seem that conditions similar to ME/CFS have been around for considerably longer than is generally assumed. The mixture of a broad array of neurological and muscular symptoms that can occur after an infective illness can be traced back into history. For instance, as far back as 1750, Sir Richard Manningham reported a syndrome referred to as ' febricula' (or 'little fever') that had a large number of symptoms but was hard to objectively diagnose.

What is CFS?
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) attacks people of all ages and walks of life, leaving many indefinitely disabled. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the number of suffers is growing. CFS can strike anyone. It causes a wide array of symptoms including overwhelming weakness, extreme fatigue, chronic sore throat and tender lymph nodes, fever, muscle and joint pain, cognitive and neurological problems, irritable bowel syndrome, nausea, and vertigo. The course of CFS is uncertain. Some patients improve and recover, while others remain ill for long periods. Public awareness has grown in recent years and increased governmental resources have been devoted to understanding CFS. The CDC recently raised CFS to a "Priority 1" status in its new, infectious disease category. (Other diseases in "Priority 1" include cholera, malaria, hepatitis C and tuberculosis.)

Chronisch vermoeidheids syndroom / Myalgic Encephalomyelitis: mogelijke oorzaken

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome (PVFS)
[Guidelines, based on personal and others' experience]
    BACKGROUND
PVFS commonly follows an attack of flu, severe cold or other viral infection. It can last for a few days, weeks or months. Symptoms may include headaches, general muscle pain, feeling faint, lack of concentration etc. It is important to take adequate rest in the early stages as this helps the body to overcome the infection.
If such symptoms last beyond six months it is possible that the condition has developed into ME, or what some doctors now call Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). It is believed that the viruses, which initiate the problem, persist in the brain cells, and in muscle cells in 70% of cases. There they become modified 'so as not to unduly disturb the body's immune system'. During periods of remission the viruses lie quiet and don't cause symptoms. But stress, trauma, accident, over-exertion, immunisation or another infection can upset this balance and the virus and immune system become re-activated, causing a relapse and return of ME/CFS symptoms. ME is not an immune deficiency disease like AIDS.
