Munchausen syndrome is a form of psychological disorder known as a factitious disorder The sufferer feigns, exaggerates, or creates symptoms of illnesses in themself in order to gain attention, sympathy, and comfort from medical personnel. The role of "patient" is a familiar and comforting one, and it fills a psychological need in the man or woman with Munchausen's. In the form of the illness known as Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSbP) the "victim" of the illness is usually the patient's child, while their parent gains attention and sympathy as their "worried" mother or father. Munchausen by proxy is a form of child abuse first identified by Sir Roy Meadow , former professor of Paediatrics at the University of Leeds England . During the 1990s and early 2000s, Meadow's expert testimony sent many suspected MSbP-sufferers to prison for allegedly murdering their children, as well as causing many potential victims to be taken into care. However, during the course of a number of high-profile acquittals brought Meadow's ideas into serious disrepute. Many experts now doubt even the existence of MSbP, and at time of writing upwards of 250 convictions which relied on Meadow's evidence are under review. Meadow himself is under investigation by the British

Eleven-year-old Saket, the only child of MNC financial consultants Arti and Rakesh, suffered from a fractured ankle. Bye-bye office meant that Saket was the centre of his parents' devotion for a month. The recovery process, however, saw Saket reinventing his brain. For a boy who rarely, if ever, got to be pampered by his parents, Saket hit upon a rather ingenuous idea. It took doctors all of six months to figure out that Saket's complaints of persistent pain even after his plaster had been removed were a sham. And it took a psychiatrist to pinpoint the problem as the Munchausen syndrome.
At another level, patients suffering from the Munchausen syndrome are likely to fake a seizure, falsify lab results, manipulate an existing medical problem so that it doesn't heal, or actually induce illness by injecting themselves with an infection.

A serious medical condition it is commonly confused with hypochondria. While hypochondria-afflicted patients consult doctors actually believing that they are ill, the silent sufferer of the Munchausen syndrome is merely trying to attract attention while realising only too well that nothing is the matter with him or her. Signs And Symptoms:
  • Fabrication of false accounts (for example the patient reports that he/she had seizures) Falsification of clinical examination (reports pain when there is none) or laboratory exams (e.g. contaminates lab samples)

Munchausen syndrome - comfort in a hospital?
Posted Wed, 09 Aug 2000 By our resident psychologist In the eighteenth century, Baron Hieronymous Karl von Munchausen went to Russia to fight the Turks as a cavalry officer. A mercenary, he became famous for entertaining friends (usually over a bottle or two) with wild and dramatic tales of brave exploits and narrow escapes. In one of these the Baron told how - after an exhausting flight - he fell asleep in deep snow, tying his horse to a convenient post. Nothing else was visible. The following day, to his astonishment he found himself in a village, his unfortunate horse dangling by its bridle from the church steeple - the whole scene revealed by the now melted snow. Such stories became a bench mark for creative lying; a collection of them was later written by RE Raspe in "The Singular Travels, Campaigns and Adventures of Baron Munchausen". In 1951, an imaginative and alert physician, Dr R Asher, borrowed the Baron to describe an extraordinary psychiatric condition which he had been studying. Consider the following examples:

FALSE ACCUSATIONS OF MUNCHAUSEN SYNDROME by PROXY
presented by Dr Helen Hayward-Brown.
B ased in Australia I completed my doctoral research in the social sciences (interdisciplinary: sociology, anthropology, psychology) on the subject of false accusations of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP). Accusations of MSBP have increased in the last ten years and many mothers are being falsely accused. Many of these accusations may occur after mothers make complaints about treatment, when children suffer side-effects from drugs, or when ex-husbands are accused of sexually abusing their children. Common patterns in these cases are fabrication of evidence against mothers, the tampering of files, inaccurate files or mixing of files with other children, and bad faith allegations following parental complaints.

Definition Munchausen syndrome by proxy is a form of child abuse in which a parent induces real or apparent symptoms of a disease in a child. This syndrome almost always involves a mother abusing her child by seeking unneeded medical attention for him or her. It is rare and poorly understood. The cause is unknown. The mother may fake symptoms of illness in her child by adding blood to the child's urine or stool, withholding food, falsifying fevers, surreptitiously giving emetics or cathartics to simulate vomiting or diarrhea , or using other maneuvers (such as infecting IV lines to make the child appear or become ill).

Library: Abuse Child Neglect Definition - Child Neglect and Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy Document Author : This is an overview of a booklet from the "Portable Guides to Investigating Child Abuse" series, published by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
Reprinted From: Handsnet, 3/97
Overview: Munchausen's Syndrome refers to a psychiatric disorder where patients pretend to have illnesses, and therefore are subjected to many medical tests and surgical procedures. From a practical standpoint, a parent fulfills this duty by doing certain things that promote growth, safety, and health (such as feeding the baby regularly, watching the toddler in the park, or taking the child to the doctor when sick) and protecting the child from harm (for instance, preventing a toddler from climbing a 10-foot ladder). For various reasons, parents cannot always promote growth, health, and safety to an optimal level, either because of their own limitations, some restraint on them by their environment, or other reasons. Also, not all harm is predictable or preventable. Therefore, parents must not be held to a standard of perfect care. When the parental care falls below a reasonable or prudent level, the child may be neglected. The following is a working definition of the parental duty, against which neglectful parental care may be measured: The child has the right to expect, and the parent has a duty to reasonably and prudently provide, food, clothing, shelter, supervision, medical care, nurturance, and teaching.

What is Munchausen syndrome by proxy?
Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP) is a mental disorder in which a person falsely reports or causes symptoms in another person under his or her care. The caregiver almost always is a mother, and the victim, her child. Because children are the victims, Munchausen syndrome by proxy is considered a form of child abuse. The caregiver with MSBP may:
  • Falsely claim a child has experienced serious symptoms, such as seizures.
