Mumps
Mumps is an acute viral illness. Until relatively recently mumps was viewed primarily as an illness that affected armies during times of mobilization. The incubation period for mumps is 14-18 days (range 14-25 days). The prodromal symptoms are nonspecific, and include myalgia, anorexia, malaise, headache, and low-grade fever. Mumps
What is mumps?
Mumps is most often a childhood disease but adults can also get it. A virus causes it. Mumps causes fever, aches and pains, headaches, and swelling of the salivary glands and cheeks. About one third of people with mumps do not have salivary gland swelling. However, they can still spread the mumps virus to other people.
How is mumps spread?
The mumps virus causes the mumps disease. After you are infected with the mumps virus, it usually takes about fifteen to eighteen days before you actually get sick. A person who has caught the mumps virus can infect other people from six to seven days before to nine days after developing swollen salivary glands. It is easily spread by close contact with an infected person by breathing, coughing, sneezing, kissing, or getting an infected person's saliva into your mouth. You can be exposed to the virus in a few minutes by being only three feet from a person who has the mumps. Sharing food, drinks or cigarettes with someone who has the virus can also put you at risk.
How serious is mumps?

MUMPS
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
MUMPS , or simply M , is a programming language dedicated to building and managing databases . Whereas in most systems the database is the first-class citizen and a language is added on top, under M this is inverted, the language itself is the primary object, the database a "side effect" of one of the features of the language. M contrasts strongly with most database systems, because the system is much "lower level". For instance, whereas most database systems will include a command to find all the records matching a particular pattern, on an M system you would have to write a program to do this search and collect up the results. As you might imagine, this makes even trivial tasks much more difficult, and has led to a number of M-based programs to act as a database management system and provide these features. For people used to traditional database applications or database management systems, M can be difficult to understand at first. This is offset by its speed and flexibility in dealing with tasks that would cause problems under the relational database model. M has been called

Born in Stone County, MS, brothers L. Roy, P. Beaux and Bebe Mump spent their childhood learning to sing and play any and every kind of music under the blazing Mississippi sun. Learning everything from James Brown to the Brownsville Station, The Beatles to the Sex Pistols, Willie Nelson to Metallica, the Mumps have built a musical vocabulary like no other. From such diverse influences has come an original sound that is as contagious as the family name. Noticed in early 2001 by Jackson's, Mississippi's Northside T Records, the Mumps were quickly snatched from their anonymity and their first single "Sarah Michelle Gellar" (an ode to frontman L. Roy's favorite television actress) was released to college radio.

Egg Allergies And The MMR (Measles-Mumps-Rubella) Vaccine
I read that you should not vaccinate for MMR if your child has an egg allergy. I found out that my 17-month baby girl gets a rash from egg whites. What kind of problems can occur when she receives the MMR vaccine? Should she not have it?
The current measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR) does not contain a significant amount of egg proteins (but two other vaccines do). As recently as 1994, the AAP recommended skin testing of all children with severe egg allergies before they received the MMR. This is no longer necessary. Even those with dramatic egg allergies are extremely unlikely to have an

Epidemic parotitis. Introduction:
Mumps has been a common disease for centuries. Hippocrates wrote about it almost 2500 years ago. It’s not all that serious an illness. It doesn’t even affect male fertility the way that most people think. So why was a vaccine developed? Well, about 1/3 of the men who get mumps develop exquisite pain and swelling in one or both testicles, which then shrivel up and remain permanently atrophied. Perhaps that had something to do with it!

Measles, mumps, rubella vaccine, inflammatory bowel disease and autism
Recent media reports have suggested a link between the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine, bowel inflammation and autism. No reliable evidence supports a link. This fact sheet provides background information for health professionals and parents. What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)? IBD is a group of chronic inflammatory disorders of the small and large bowel, the commonest being ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The cause of IBD is not understood, but an immune mechanism as well as a genetic predisposition are likely. IBD is relatively rare, and usually occurs in people aged between 15 to 30 years, but can also occur in children. Common symptoms include diarrhoea, fever, stomach pain and weight loss. What is autism? Autism is a developmental disorder that is usually identified between 18 months and three years of age. Autism is four times more common in boys than girls and occurs in all racial and social groups. Children and adults with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. A single cause of autism has not been identified, but current research links it to developmental, genetic and environmental factors. Many children have some of the features of autism but do not fulfil all the diagnostic criteria. Because of this, terms such as "Pervasive Developmental Disorder" (PDD) and Autism Spectrum disorder are sometimes used.

ABOUT
Measles-Mumps-Rubella Vaccines

A number of claims about immunisation have appeared recently in letters to New Zealand newspapers in relation to the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Vaccine. In some instances, these claims are incorrect.
Parents have the right to make informed choices about immunisation. Parents need reliable information about the nine diseases which immunisation protects against, and the effectiveness and side effects of the vaccines.
The Ministry of Health fully supports immunisation. It is free, and protects against measles, mumps, rubella, polio, whooping cough, diphtheria, tetanus, Haemophilus influenza (Hib) and Hepatitis B. The risk of complications from catching these diseases is far greater than the side effects from vaccines.
Parents can get reliable information from:

What are some of the current claims being made about the Measles-Mumps-Rubella Vaccine?
Claim: there were serious complications following an MMR campaign in the UK.

Mumps
Mumps is an acute viral illness characterised by swelling of the parotid glands, which may be unilateral or bilateral. It can cause permanent unilateral deafness at any age. The incubation period is 14-21 days. Before vaccination, mumps was a common cause of viral meningitis. Now the vaccine is given as part of the triple MMR (mumps, measles, rubella) vaccine, introduced in 1988, the same year that mumps became a notifiable disease.

Public Opinion Strategies (Alexandria, Virginia) was commissioned by Merck to conduct a national telephone survey of 600 adults ages 40 and over and 600 children, ages 8 to 12. It is the first national survey to actually question children about their attitudes toward getting shots and to measure their understanding of vaccines and the diseases they prevent. "What's clear is that with the success of our immunization programs, vaccines have reduced the fear of these diseases among adults and even name recognition among children," William Atkinson, M.D., a medical epidemiologist with the National Immunization Program at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), said today at a press conference releasing the survey findings. Parents believe that vaccines have made it safer for their children, the survey shows. Among adults, concerns about measles, mumps and rubella have definitely diminished over time, since the introduction of a vaccine. Concern over measles, which 74% of adults feel are "life-threatening," dropped a full point, from a mean score of 3.2 on a scale of 5, to 2.2, with 5 being the greatest level of concern.

Discussion of viral pathogenesis and disease, epidemiology, prevention and treatment. INTRODUCTION Infections with measles, mumps and rubella viruses are confined to man and occur worldwide. They are all spread primarily via the aerosol route. Each of these viruses exists as a single serotype . MMR (mumps, measles, rubella) vaccine contains live, attenuated forms of all three of these viruses. Measles and mumps viruses belong to the Paramyxovirus Family and are enveloped, non-segmented, negative-sense RNA viruses with helical symmetry (figure 1A).
