MMR is usually given to toddlers Students at 41 universities across the UK are to be offered the MMR jab after a case of mumps was reported at a sporting event.
The Department of Health has said at-risk students should be offered the measles, mumps and rubella vaccination. A student at the SportsParty 2004 student games held in Lloret de Mar, Spain was infected with mumps. More than 2,000 students from UK universities and colleges attended the event. These outbreaks illustrate why it is important for children to be fully vaccinated in childhood
Department of Health spokesman The Department has written to primary care trusts (PCTs) across the country to say they should offer the vaccination to limit the spread of mumps. Outbreaks of mumps have recently been reported among students in Derby and York. Dr David Salisbury, of the Department of Health's immunisation and communicable disease team, said the Derby cases may be linked to the outbreak.

Malcolm Chisholm said people should get the MMR injection Scotland's health minister has voiced concerns over a large rise in confirmed cases of mumps.
Malcolm Chisholm said the figures demonstrated the need for everyone to have the controversial measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) injection. The statistics said there were 370 cases of mumps in Scotland in the first four months of this year - almost eight times the total number in 2003. Most of those affected were in their late teens or early twenties. In January parents in Glasgow were warned about a rise in mumps cases in the city. Disease rates Students and staff at Stirling University have also been offered the triple injection after an outbreak of mumps on campus. There have also been at least six outbreaks in England and Wales this year. Figures from the Health Protection Agency, which monitors disease rates in England and Wales, suggested that there were 450 cases south of the border in the first quarter of 2004 - almost as many as in the whole of 2002. The agency insisted that the rise in cases was not linked to the reduced take up of MMR amongst babies in recent years.

free Adobe Acrobat Reader. Accelerating MUMPS Database Integration iWay Software's intelligent MUMPS adapter provides highly efficient access to MUMPS data. The adapter is engineered in the same way as other iWay data adapters, so developers may use ANSI-standard SQL statements to access MUMPS data from any iWay tool. Third-party products can also access the adapter via iWay connectors, including ODBC, OLE DB, JDBC, XML , iWay Business Services (Web services), and others. In addition, data may be integrated with more than 200 other information sources , including other relational and nonrelational databases, transaction systems custom or packaged applications , message-oriented middleware, XML documents, EDI networks, and more. How iWay Intelligent Data Adapters Work Together All iWay Intelligent Adapters are designed for consistent operation within iWay's robust middleware framework, thereby minimizing the skill sets required to use each database and support new projects. Each adapter consists of a communications interface, an SQL translator that manages adapter operations in either SQL or iWay's universal Data Manipulation Language (DML), and a database interface that translates ANSI SQL into native API calls. Multiple iWay adapters running on the same platform can all share communications and translation components for greater efficiency. Highly Optimized for MUMPS The iWay Intelligent Adapter for MUMPS receives ANSI-standard SQL requests and translates them into iWay's universal DML. These DML statements are used to access the target database using native MUMPS API calls to retrieve data targeted in the request. If required, the adapter will generate the appropriate iWay SQL and DML statements to perform cross-database joins with other data sources.

Swellings appeared about the ears…. In all cases they disappeared without giving trouble, neither did any of them come to suppuration, as is common in swellings from other causes. They were of a lax, large, diffused character, without inflammation or pain… In some instances earlier, and in others later, inflammations with pain seized sometimes one of the testicles, and sometimes both.
    -Hippocrates,(460-375BC)
Mumps is a contagious viral infection spread by droplet infection. This typically causes enlargement of one or more of the salivary glands. These glands are located on either side of the face, below the ears.
This gives an appearance rather like a "hamster with food in it's cheeks"...
    Etiology and Incidence:
This is less communicable than measles or chickenpox. One attack usually confers permanent immunity, even though only one salivary gland has been enlarged. About 25 to 30% of cases are clinically in apparent.

    Mumps
    What is mumps?
Mumps is an acute (sudden) viral illness. What causes mumps?
The virus that causes mumps is a paramyxovirus. It is spread by direct contact as well as by airborne droplets and saliva. Mumps was once considered one of the inevitable infectious diseases of childhood. Since a mumps vaccine became available in 1967, the incidence of mumps has declined in the U.S., but there are still many underimmunized populations (for example, more blacks than whites have not yet been immunized). What are the symptoms of mumps? Mumps usually presents with inflammation of the salivary glands, particularly the parotid glands (salivary glands near the ears). A child with mumps often looks like a chipmunk with a full mouth due to the swelling of the parotids. (Mumps is also called epidemic parotitis). Mumps can cause inflammation of tissues other than the salivary glands. Most frequently, the covering and substance of the central nervous system are inflamed causing meningoencephalitis. The pancreas is another target organ resulting in pancreatitis. Especially after adolescence, mumps tends to affect the ovary (oophoritis) and the testis (orchitis). The mature testis is particularly susceptible to damage from mumps which can lead to infertility.
