The European Multiple System Atrophy Study Group (EMSA-SG) was founded in January 1999. It represents a consortium of scientific investigators from academic and research centres in Europe and Israel who are committed to clinical trial activity and other research studies aimed at improving the treatment of MSA. To this end, EMSA-SG aims to advance knowledge about the aetiology and pathogenesis of MSA. Furthermore, EMSA-SG will work with government and industry sponsors to develop and implement novel therapeutic interventions in MSA. EMSA-SG is committed to the principles of open and full scientific communication. EMSA-SG is also interested in educating professionals and the public by providing scientific and medical information about MSA. EMSA-SG intends to pursue these objectives in close cooperation with the North American MSA Study Group (NAMSA-SG).

Multiple System Atrophy Medline NLM definition : A syndrome complex composed of three conditions which represent clinical variants of the same disease process: STRIATONIGRAL DEGENERATION; SHY-DRAGER SYNDROME; and the sporadic form of OLIVOPONTOCEREBELLAR ATROPHIES. Clinical features include autonomic, cerebellar, and basal ganglia dysfunction. Pathologic examination reveals atrophy of the basal ganglia, cerebellum, pons, and medulla, with prominent loss of autonomic neurons in the brain stem and spinal cord. What and How Next Download Summary ( Printer-Friendly) What is Multiple System Atrophy (MSA)? A. What is Shy-Drager Syndrome (SDS)? Diagnosis is sometimes aided by testing autonomic nervous system function, for example, by measuring blood pressure and heart rate with the patient laying down compared with standing up. A polysomnogram, or sleep study, can document sleep apnea (gaps in breathing during sleep). Brain imaging with CT and MRI are usually helpful in differentiating typical Parkinson's disease from atypical parkinsonism. B. What is Striatonigral Degeneration (SND)?

yes no Multiple System Atrophy: MSA; Shy Drager syndrome Multiple System Atrophy is a neurological disorder caused by degeneration of cells in certain areas of the brain. These control a number of different body systems; hence the name. They include functions of the autonomic nervous system (such as the control of blood pressure, sweating, bladder function) and the motor systems (such as muscle activation, movement and balance). MSA affects both men and women. Symptoms usually start between 40 and 60 years of age. The cause of MSA is not known, but is neither inherited nor contagious. MSA can manifest in a variety of different ways and progresses in an unpredictable sequence and time scale for each patient. It is important to understand that having a diagnosis of MSA does not mean that you will experience all the symptoms from the range below. The initial symptoms may resemble Parkinson's disease with slowness of movement, stiffness of limbs and occasionally tremor. Some patients may have been given anti-parkinsonian drug treatment for these problems (with mixed results). A poor response to these drugs and the appearance of some of the following symptoms are indicators of MSA:

General Discussion
The term multiple system atrophy has generated significant controversy and confusion in the medical literature. The term now encompasses three conditions once thought to be separate disorders, specifically Shy-Drager syndrome, striatonigral degeneration, and sporadic olivopontocerebellar atrophy. Additionally, there is a hereditary form of olivopontocerebellar atrophy that is not part of the multiple system atrophy spectrum.

Disease - Multiple system atrophy
Central nervous system Definition: Multiple system atrophy is a degenerative disorder characterized by the following:
  • Progressive damage to the autonomic nervous system (the portion of the nervous system that controls involuntary functions such as blood pressure, heart rate, digestion, and sexual function) Muscle tremor and rigidity Slow movement
Alternative Names: Causes And Risk: Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a rare degenerative condition. Its symptoms are similar to those of in that patients may move slowly, be tremulous, and have a shuffling gait. However, in MSA there is more widespread neurologic damage and damage to the autonomic nervous system (the portion of the nervous system that controls involuntary functions). There is progressive degeneration of the nervous system, with damage to all parts of the nervous system, including the brain. The cause is unknown. MSA develops gradually and is most often diagnosed in men older than 60.

loss of dopamine in the striatum is the major contributor to the disorder. However,
there are several other neurodegenerative disorders involving several different systems in the brain, in which striatal dopamine loss is also found. Among these other neurodegenerative disorders is multiple system atrophy (MSA), in which degeneration in diverse brain regions leads to problems in the control of movement, balance, blood pressure, and sexual and urinary tract function. Alpha Synuclein in a Model of Multiple System Atrophy
Authors: VETERANS MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION SAN DIEGO CA Abstract: Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a progressive neurological disorder characterized by parkinsonism, cerebellar dysfiinction and autonomic impairment. The cardinal pathological feature of MSA is the glial cytoplasmic inclusion (GCI) in oligodendrocytes, and a major component of GCIs is oc-synuclein. We identified a rat oligodendrocytic precursor cell line (CG-4) that produces a- synuclein and characterized oc-synuclein in the cells and production of a- synuclein after differentiation to mature oligodendrocytes and astrocytes. Studies to date suggest that oxidative stress can cause aggregation of a- synuclein. We have further developed CG-4 cells that can overexpress human a- synuclein constitutively or under the control of a tetracycline inducible promoter. Alpha Synuclein in a Model of Multiple System Atrophy
Authors: Shults, Clifford W.; VETERANS MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION SAN DIEGO CA Abstract: Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a progressive neurological disorder characterized by parkinsonism, cerebellar dysfunction and autonomic impairment. The cardinal pathological feature of MSA is the glial cytoplasmic inclusion (OCI) in oligodendrocytes, and a major component of OCIs is a-synuclein. We identified an oligodendrocytic precursor cell line, CG-4, that endogenously produces a-synuclein. We characterized alpha synuclein-immunoreactive (alpha synuclein-IR) material in the CO-4 cells (with affection to higher molecular weight forms), and studied the effects of oxidative stress. We also produced CO- 4 cells that constitutively overexpress human alpha-synuclein and CO-4 cells that express human alpha-synuclein under control of the tetracycline-ON (inducible promoter) system, and we have characterized both of these.
