Astraea's MULTIPLICITY RESOURCES Today is: Wednesday June 02, 2004 07:22:29 PM This page was last updated Monday May 03, 2004 05:01:01 PM We welcome your comments! Please click here to email us. There is now a text-only version of the FAQ. Hundreds of web pages cater to the norm, validating the standard MPD/DID paradigm. We are the alternative. - Think about this: - A group of persons exist in a parallel space. They are individuals with their own bodies, voices, names and histories. They are often able to communicate with each other. At any time one or more of them may interact with the world-at-large through a single human body. Not a diagnosis. Not a pathological disorder, nor a highly sophisticated coping mechanism for dealing with childhood trauma. Not MPD/DID. These are the labels that the psychiatric community uses to describe something it can't understand. Is it possible that multiple personality is not always caused by childhood trauma? Can people living together in one body acknowledge themselves and each other ... Is this multiple personality at all? What would you call it? Tell us what you think. Multiple systems exist which did not originate as one mind splitting into many. It's simply the way they are, as natural as being left-handed.

(Redirected from Multiple personality disorder In psychiatry Dissociative Identity Disorder DID ) is the current name of the condition formerly listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as Multiple Personality Disorder and Multiple Personality Syndrome . The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems continues to list it as Multiple Personality Disorder. Multiplicity possession trance religions, demonic possession and two-spirits . Indeed, in several cases, doctors have resorted to exorcisms in order to treat DID. http://www.rickross.com/reference/satanism/satanism70.html http://www.dissociation.com/index/published/CastItOut.txt The very existence of DID is questioned by some doctors and scientists. The growing consensus among most doctors and scientists is that DID exists, but that it is an iatrogenic ("caused by doctors") illness that is generally created by suggestion or self-suggestion. The ISSD treatment guidelines indicate that DID should be considered an error in thinking on the part of the client, who believes that aspects of her personality have split off into distinct persons; therapy focuses on encouraging the client to see herself as a single, "whole" person. A few psychiatrists continue to claim that it is a severe illness that cannot be created in adult life, brought on by extreme abuse in childhood. (formerly Multiple Personality Disorder) Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), previously referred to as multiple personality disorder (MPD), is a dissociative disorder involving a disturbance of identity in which two or more separate and distinct personality states (or identities) control the individual's behavior at different times. When under the control of one identity, the person is usually unable to remember some of the events that occurred while other personalities were in control. The different identities, referred to as alters, may exhibit differences in speech, mannerisms, attitudes, thoughts, and gender orientation. The alters may even differ in "physical" properties such as allergies, right-or-left handedness, or the need for eyeglass prescriptions. These differences between alters are often quite striking. The person with DID may have as few as two alters, or as many as 100. The average number is about 10. Often alters are stable over time, continuing to play specific roles in the person's life for years. Some alters may harbor aggressive tendencies, directed toward individuals in the person's environment, or toward other alters within the person. At the time that a person with DID first seeks professional help, he or she is usually not aware of the condition. A very common complaint in people with DID is episodes of amnesia, or time loss. These individuals may be unable to remember events in all or part of a proceeding time period. They may repeatedly encounter unfamiliar people who claim to know them, find themselves somewhere without knowing how they got there, or find items that they don't remember purchasing among their possessions.
