WeRMany Wind Beneath Their Wings Supporting the Significant Others of Survivors WeRMany places great importance on the role of significant others (SO's) in the lives of people dealing with MPD/DID. A significant other includes spouses, life partners, friends, children, relatives or anyone who serves as a support person in the life of a multiple. SO's often have a heavy burden placed on them as they give support not only in times of healing, but also in times of crisis and great confusion. Visit WeRMany to continue reading when you click here From our Bookstore The Stranger In The Mirror Most DID cases are the result of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse in childhood. Psychiatrist Steinberg puts her considerable research and clinical experience to the purpose of making it clear that DID is a "hidden epidemic," that many of its sufferers are misdiagnosed and fail to receive proper early treatment, and that the sensationalism of many MPD cases of yore (e.g., The Three Faces of Eve) has warped physicians' as well as public attitudes.

Child Abuse And Multiple Personality Disorder
Philip M. Coons, M.D.
Department of Psychiatry, Indiana University School of Medicine
Abstract: The syndrome of multiple personality is associated with a high incidence of physical and/or sexual abuse in childhood. Occasionally those with multiple personality abuse their own children. Multiple personality is difficult to diagnose both because of the nature of the syndrome and because of professional reluctance. Although multiple personality is most difficult to diagnose during childhood because of the subtlety of the syndrome. The much higher morbidity found in adult cases makes it imperative that it be diagnosed and treated early in order to avoid further abuse and greater morbidity and to shorten treatment time. This review describes the history, clinical features and treatment of multiple personality, particularly in children, in addition to exploring the professional reluctance to make the diagnosis. Introduction: MULTIPLE PERSONALITY DISORDER is of special interest to clinicians interested in child abuse and neglect because patients with multiple personality were almost invariably abused either physically or sexually when they were children. Like other victims of child abuse. sometimes those with multiple personality abuse their children. Also. like child abuse. there is a professional reluctance to diagnose multiple personality. Perhaps most importantly, clinicians working in the area of child abuse have the opportunity of diagnosing incipient multiple personality in children and initiate early intervention leading to successful treatment.

At Boeing's high-tech factory in St Charles, Mo., reports The Washington Post, three shifts are working 24 hours a day turning out smart bombs to replenish Air Force and Navy inventories, which ran "dangerously low" during the Afghan war. Afghanistan has been merely "the first theatre in the war against terror," President Bush does not tire of repeating: "This nation must seize the moment. If we blink, the rest of the world will blink as well." And while the American president's Asian tour seems to have shown him that two of the three members of the "axis of evil" are proving somewhat difficult as prospective bomb-and-peanut butter sandwich markets, Iraq continues to be easy pickings. Under the banner of the war against terror, US annual military spending has been hiked by a staggering $48 billion for fiscal 2002. The increase alone is larger than the military budget of any other country in the world, while, at $379 billion, the American military budget is (according to the Washington-based Council for a Livable World) six times larger than the third largest military spender in the world, Russia; higher than the combined military budgets of the next 25 countries on the list of military big spenders; and more than 26 times as large as the combined military budgets of the seven countries traditionally identified by the Pentagon as America's most likely adversaries (Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan and Syria). The "axis of evil" collectively spends a paltry $21 billion.

I am not a professional in the psychological field, but neither am I a layperson. I am someone who lives my life as "WE" , therefore somewhat of an expert on Multiple Personality Disorder. The purpose of this page is to dispel certain preconceived notions non-multiples have concerning multiplicity. In my personal opinion, there is a lack of knowledge in general on the subject of MPD. The media, more often that not, gives an outright false impression of MPD, that in turn, only perpetuates the stereotypical beliefs about the disorder. The following pages are my attempt to enlighten and to allow you a chance to look into the world of one multiple and her family. I hope by letting you glimpse into the mirror that holds the reflections of the many "me's" that light will have been shed where the darkness of misinformation was once cast. If you have any suggestions or feedback you can leave a message on one of the Message forums Before you leave, please take just a few seconds and sign my guestbook, so I can know you were here. If you are someone who knows my real name, Please protect my anonymity by only using the handle, Silent Legacy, when referring to me on these pages, whether it is on one of the Message Boards or Guestbooks, or it will have to be deleted. Thanks for your understanding.

Multiple Personality Disorder (Dissociative Identity Disorder) is the existence within a person of two or more distinct personalities. The different personalities are referred to as "alters". Alters may have experienced a distinct personal history, self-image, and identity, including a separate name, as well as age. At least two of these personalities recurrently take control of the person's behavior. For me multiplicity is life, not a definition, but the purpose here is to help the non-multiple gain insight about the inner world of the multiple, so below is the definition the majority of multiples themselves would give you. Multiplicity, simply put, is about hiding, pain and survival, no more, no less. It is a desperate, completely creative, and wonderful survival mechanism. For the child who endures repeated and inescapable abuse, it may be their only escape. I consider myself to be blessed with MPD not cursed. It was a gift from God to me, to ensure my survival in a world that was full of insanity and reason not to survive. That is not to say that being a multiple is a picnic, because it is not. It certainly brings it share of difficulties for me in my life, but what I am saying is, at least I can do life and do it with some degree of mental health because I survived an insane childhood with my sanity. Individuals most likely to develop MPD share several common factors. They have endured repetitive, and often life-threatening abuse during a developmental stage of childhood. The type of abuse can vary or be a combination of physical, extreme emotional, sexual or Satanic Ritual Abuse. The multiple may have a biological predisposition for auto-hypnotic phenomena, or in plain english, a high level of hypnotizablitiy.

F 134 Multiple-personality disorder is just what it sounds like: a clinical psychiatric condition whose sufferers exhibit more than one apparent personality in a single body. Some therapists claim over a hundred personalities in one body, which may present themselves as differing from the body in age, appearance, sex, language and even species. (Some therapists claim to have uncovered vegetable and even inanimate personalities.) I have tried to use language as neutral about this as possible, since there is a great deal of controversy about what, exactly, is going on in these lunatics, and even what they should be called. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, another mental disorder altogether, and one with, ironically, a much firmer grip in reality. William Calvin Chimerism seems obviously linked to demon or spirit possession, a condition which was once very common in Europe, and still to be observed among, e.g., Pentecostals and Haitian voodooists; and to shamanistic trances,

Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD)

"Christian" psychology has once again joined hands with the world. Christians are actively involved with alleged multiple personalities, both as therapists and as patients. Besides following the world in diagnosis and treatment, they may add exorcism and/or a new kind of evangelism that seeks to save each and every alternate personality just to be sure the entire person will go to heaven.
Since Christians are diagnosing and treating other Christians as if they have "multiple personality disorder" (MPD), we must ask two questions: (1) Is MPD a scientifically established diagnosis or is it the latest fad in the mysterious world of psychology and psychiatry?; and
(2) Can one remain true to Biblical orthodoxy while combining it with secular MPD diagnosis and treatment? MPD is one of the most fascinating and seemingly mind-boggling psychiatric phenomena today. It is also one of the fastest growing segments of psychiatric consumerism. Its growth parallels the booming business of recovering (or constructing) memories of abuse and satanic ritual abuse (SRA) . They go together. Consider the case of Lucy Abney, who entered treatment for depression and ended up with 100 alternate personalities after two years of therapy. Besides developing so-called MPD, Abney "relived" such horrendous "memories" as sacrificing three of her children and drinking blood. Although Abney admits that "the memories were very real, very vivid," she has concluded they were not based on reality. They were fantasy.1

The Infinite Mind: Multiple Personality Disorder Week of December 8, 1998 (Originally aired June 8, 1998) From time to time, we all experience differing states of mind, like happiness or anger, but underneath our changing reactions to the changing world around us lies our personality, fixed and stable traits that determines who we are. Hence, switching from one personality to another in a moment seems strange, even frightening. The root of the condition we call multiple personality disorder is dissociation. Mild dissociation, the feeling we get when we "zone out" when things feel too overwhelming, is considered a normal defense mechanism. But when children exposed to severe, prolonged trauma must dissociate constantly, the need to shift from one personality state to another can become permanent. Carol Jean Darby Cline would often find herself greeted by people she didn't recognize, or suddenly find herself in a place without any idea of how she got there. Cline wrote

(Redirected from Dissociative Identity Disorder In psychiatry Dissociative Identity Disorder DID ) is the current name of the condition formerly listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as Multiple Personality Disorder and Multiple Personality Syndrome . The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems continues to list it as Multiple Personality Disorder. Multiplicity possession trance religions, demonic possession and two-spirits . Indeed, in several cases, doctors have resorted to exorcisms in order to treat DID. http://www.rickross.com/reference/satanism/satanism70.html http://www.dissociation.com/index/published/CastItOut.txt The very existence of DID is questioned by some doctors and scientists. The growing consensus among most doctors and scientists is that DID exists, but that it is an iatrogenic ("caused by doctors") illness that is generally created by suggestion or self-suggestion. The ISSD treatment guidelines indicate that DID should be considered an error in thinking on the part of the client, who believes that aspects of her personality have split off into distinct persons; therapy focuses on encouraging the client to see herself as a single, "whole" person. A few psychiatrists continue to claim that it is a severe illness that cannot be created in adult life, brought on by extreme abuse in childhood. -Journal of Clinical Psychiatry "The book promises to be a synthesis of the ideas, techniques, and treatment philosophies about MPD. It delivers on these promises and more....The sober, detailed, step-by-step guide through every conceivable aspect of the complex therapy of these patients provides a balanced guide for all clinicians dealing with multiple personality and other dissociative disorders. Putnam's work will be the standard in the field for a long time to come. In breadth of scope, clarity of style, and lucidity of ideas it may even surpass Janet's classic works on the subject."
-Bessel van der Kolk, MD, Massachusetts Mental Health Center Trauma Clinic Director, Harvard Medical School, Author of Psychological Trauma Written for the wide range of professionals that come into contact with MPD, this volume will be of interest to psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, social workers, and other mental health practitioners. Also, because a disproportionate number of people with MPD were at one time victims of sexual abuse, any therapist working with sex abuse victims should be familiar with the information found here.

But according to research psychologist Nicholas P. Spanos, Ph.D., Multiple Personality Disorder (recently renamed Dissociative Identity Disorder or DID), is not a 'disease' at all, but a 'social construction' that serves the various purposes of MPD patients, their therapists and elements of society. He recommends that the diagnosis be abandoned. 'Multiple Identities and False Memories: A Sociocognitive Perspective,' published by the American Psychological Association (APA), was written by Dr. Spanos shortly before his death in a plane crash in 1994. It is a wide-ranging and thoroughly documented examination of the scientific literature on the phenomenon of Multiple Personality Disorder and its possible connection to recovered memories of childhood sexual abuse, reports of satanic ritual abuse, past-life regression and claims of alien abduction. One of the common threads running through these phenomena is the use of hypnosis to retrieve 'lost' memories and reveal hidden identities. Dr. Spanos, who was one of the world's leading experts on the study of hypnosis, offers his conclusion that some of the most common beliefs about hypnosis simply are not true.

EXORCISM AND MPD FROM A CATHOLIC PERSPECTIVE Added to that issue is the highly variable use of language, with some religious groups considering any encounter with impulses not easily controlled, or an emotional illness not responding to treatment as being evidence of possession or influence by the demonic. Thus, a religious community can refer to being oppressed or possessed "by the spirit of anger" when there is difficulty for someone in controlling their temper. I would like to limit my discussion to the idea of exorcism and its implications in the context of the usual theological and cultural understanding of Catholics. In this discussion, I would define demonic possession as a continuing state or presence of an evil entity that is not "of the person." That external entity is capable of direct control of the person and/or taking over of the person’s body. I would define demonic oppression as a continuing state of severe assault by an external evil entity, but the person retains control of behavior and of the body. Both possession and oppression are far more than a situation of temptation, and are inherently direct contacts with the presence of evil. I would define exorcism as a religious attempt, using prayers, religious symbols, and orders to expel an evil entity. As soon as there is an attempt at expulsion, with a perception that

Short Description: Schizophrenia/MPD: (Damaged Past Life Filters)
In many cases, Schizophrenia (SCH) and/or Multiple Personality Disorders (MPD) are caused by damaged memory filters which allow past life personalities to control the present day body-mind in ways that are both inappropriate and damaging. Causes: Memory filters in the mind are designed to help individuals access their past life skills and talents without connecting with the "past life personalities" who earned them. What normally happens is, when an individual is in crisis, they access the "unused" part of their brain (where all their past life data is stored) to help them overcome it. Often the past life personality was an integral part of exercise of the talent or skill, which is why the mind needs to filter out the "personality" from the "learned skill or talent". When the crisis is averted, the pathway to that part of their brain is automatically shut off by the mind's past life filters.
In both Schizophrenia (SCH) and/or Multiple Personality Disorders (MPD), the crises are either so severe or so chronic and long lasting that past life filters will no longer function properly. The mind then has difficulty distinguishing between the current and all prior personalities. In a sense, the prior personalities come back to life and fight for the attention of the current body-mind. In MPD, a host of prior personalities jockey for position at the forefront of the person's awareness and end up "taking turns". In SCH, there is usually a very dominant prior personality which drives out all others except themselves and the current day personality.
