Multiple Chemical Sensitivity
It is known that chemicals cause many human diseases. Some of the chemicals that have been documented to be dangerous to human exposure include:
  • tobacco smoke - the major cause of lung cancer
  • asbestos - causes mesothelioma, an unusual tumor of the linings of the chest and abdominal cavity, lung cancer, asbestosis, and an increased risk of gastrointestinal cancer
  • kepone - causes sterility in men and neurological disorders
  • dibromochloropropane - causes sterility in men
Reactions to certain chemicals may cause reactions similar to those experienced with allergies. Chemicals that may cause sensitivity may include synthetic and natural substances found in:
  • carpeting
  • plastics
  • perfumes
  • plants
  • paint
  • cigarette smoke
There are many other chemicals which are under investigation and the problem continues to grow because of the ever increasing production of organic chemicals.

Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), where people report being exquisitely sensitive to a wide range of organic chemicals, is almost always described as being "controversial." The main source of this supposed controversy is that there has been no plausible physiological mechanism for MCS and consequently, it was difficult to interpret the puzzling reported features of this condition. As discussed below, this is no longer true and consequently the main source of such controversy has been laid to rest. There still are important issues such as how it should be diagnosed and treated and these may also be allayed by further studies of the mechanism discussed below.
The exquisite sensitivity of many MCS people is most clearly seen through their reported sensitivity to perfumes. MCS people report becoming ill when a person wearing perfumes walks by or when they are seated several seats away from someone wearing perfume. Clearly the perfume wearer is exposed to a much higher dose than is the MCS person and yet the perfume wearer reports no obvious illness. This strongly suggests that MCS people must be at least 100 times more sensitive than are normal individuals and perhaps a 1000 or more times more sensitive.

Symptoms Diagnosis Related Conditions Do I Have CFIDS? ... Profiles Diagnosis: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is an illness marked by multiple symptoms in multiple organ systems when exposed to chemicals at levels below what is expected to produce illness. It is also known as environmental illness (EI). MCS is fairly common in the U.S. population, with 16% of people in California and New Mexico reporting they were "unusually sensitive to everyday chemicals" and 6% and 2%, respectively reporting a prior MCS diagnosis. Diagnosis of MCS
Consensus criteria for the definition of MCS were established by a group of MCS researchers and clinicians in 1999. The following six criteria must be present for a person to be diagnosed with MCS:
1. The symptoms are reproducible with repeated exposure to the same chemical.
2. The condition is chronic.
3. Low levels of exposure (lower than previously or commonly tolerated) result in manifestations of the syndrome.
4. The symptoms improve or resolve when the incitants are removed.

Skip Intro MCS Research and Definition The medical community has long questioned the etiology of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) or Environmental Illness (EI). According to Cynthia Wilson of the Chemical Injury Information Network, as long ago as the 1950's physician's recognized that people were becoming sick due to their environment ( http://www.ciin.org/what.htm ). There have been many theories regarding the cause of MCS but due to the lack of reliable scientific research, the medical community and the general public have failed to recognize the physiological effects of chemicals on the body. In an article providing an overview of MCS, Cynthia Wilson states, "The latest research strongly suggests that chemical sensitivity is most probably some combination of central nervous system damage and enzyme deficiencies that can also cause problems with the endocrine and immune systems. Chemical sensitivity is more often than not characterized by real, verifiable damage to the body, though the implications of these anomalies are poorly understood and need additional research." (

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) Air Cleaners Natural Solutions Environmental, Inc. is proud to provide two different units DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR MULTIPLE CHEMICAL SENSITIVITY (MCS) SUFFERS. The expression "multiple chemical sensitivity" ("MCS") is used to describe people with numerous troubling symptoms attributed to environmental factors. Many such people seek air cleaners to help with common indoor gases pollutants such as perfumes, plastics, home furnishings, cleaning materials, and common off-gassing of materials in the home, etc.. Unfortunately, many air cleaners on the market today believe that since they remove pollutants from the air that they are also good for MCS suffers. The problem is that many of materials used (Glues, Silicone, Bonding agents , Paints, HEPA material, etc.) to make those air cleaners also may contribute to the problem that MCS suffers have. Many MCS suffers find that they can not tolerate the off-gassing of the materials that make up the air cleaner that is suppose to help them. The following air cleaners are SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR MCS SUFFERS ! These air cleaners use NO Glues, NO Silicone, NO Caulking and NO Bonding

Chemical Sensitivity
It's a Serious Problem More Often Than You Think!!!
by Adrienne Buffaloe, MD
The source of the problem There are over 70,000 chemicals commercially produced in the United States today. many of which were developed after World War II. The long-term, low dose effects of many of these chemicals have never been investigated. In fact, the term “low dose” is misleading, implying low concentrations are harmless. But many chemicals are harmful in very low doses, like the herbicide 2,4, 5-T which is harmful in parts-per-trillion. Unless generated by the body (formaldehyde, pentane), the body’s level for chemicals should be non-detectable, and not “low level”. With the energy conservation efforts of the 1980’s came the construction of closed buildings. The inability to circulate fresh air coupled with the rise in toxic construction materials and an increase in the use of office machines has created an indoor air pollution problem that exceeds outdoor air pollution. In fact, only approximately 40% of indoor chemicals come from outdoors. Sixty percent of indoor chemicals are generated by products or machines used indoors. The workplace is a site for chemical toxicity. Closed buildings present their own problems, and each profession additionally contributes specific chemical exposures. With the down-sizing of many businesses and the movement of workers from the office to their respective homes, the home must also be evaluated as a source of occupational chemical exposure. And because the “work” of childhood is to become educated, schools with their multiple chemicals (asbestos, chalk, paints, solvents, commercial cleaning products, etc.) are a source for substantial chemical toxicity, not only for children but also for teachers, secretaries, janitors, and other school employees.
