Multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity syndrome (MCS) affects some 40 million Americans to some degree. Although this disease is not yet recognized by the American Medical Association, medical professionals are helping MCS sufferers.
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is defined as a chronic multisystem disorder, usually polysymptomatic, caused by adverse reactions to environmental incitants, modified by individual susceptibility and specific adaptation. The incitants are present in air, water, food, drugs, and our habitat. Thats pretty much all-inclusive; where do you seek respite from something thats everywhere? Roughly forty million Americans try to find the answer to that question every day of their lives. Thats the estimated number who suffer some degree of what has been called ecological illness, twentieth-century disease, and chemical AIDS. The most strongly affected among them live isolated, anxiety-wrought lives in as barren an environment as they can practically (or impracticably) manage. How did this disease come to be; what are the symptoms; is there effective treatment; how can you be cured of the twentieth century? bodyOffer(30368) Ask yourself a few questions: Are you bothered by itching, not just on your skin, but sometimes on the roof of your mouth or in your throat? Are your hands and feet cold? Is your hearing good at some times, poor at others; do you frequently have ringing in your ears? Can you smell things that others seem not to notice? Do perfumes, auto exhaust gasoline, fresh paint, or that new car smell make you feel sick? Are you (or your child) sunny-tempered one moment and in a rage the next? Is cleaning day, when you use bleach, ammonia, or polishes, a misery? After an hour at work, do you want to lie down and rest? Yes answers may indicate multiple chemical sensitivity.

MCS What Is It Really?
MCS stands for Multiple Chemcial Sensitivities, also known as Environmental Illness. It is allergic reactions to chemicals, often not clearly antibody driven. Symptoms can be quite bizzare, from sneezing to loosing the ability to do math, "brain fog", or even progressive coordination imparement. This is often "simply" due to the inability of the body to clear various toxins, be they from the chemicals we use in our daily lives, or from the toxins formed by various infections, infestations, etc. within our bodies. But this apparent simplicity belies a host of complex interlocking underlaying causes and systems involved. There have been tales of sometimes spectacular successes in treating MCS, but when one talks with the "cured" person some months or years later, one finds the success did not restore health all the way, or sometimes, did not do very much at all despite early good feelings. Why? What is this thing called MCS really about? The problem is that these ailments are often not simple problems with single point cures. It is often a Whole Big Mess of things going wrong and causeing other things to go wrong. With many of the victims having several problems at once, few are treated for the total impact, often resulting in only temporary cures which are later followed by "unrelated" ailments or lingering symptoms.

Heidi M. Hawkins, MAc, LAc Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, Part II: The Challenge of Treatment People with multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) often have a sense of hopelessness about the possibility of recovery. When you consider the folly of mainstream medicine treating a person who is highly reactive to chemicals with medications that are themselves chemicals, it's easy to see how people get that impression. "Untreatable" and "psychosomatic" are familiar words to people with MCS. Of course TCM has something to offer, as do other forms of natural medicine. My findings, however, have led me to realize that treating MCS requires accuracy and specificity beyond what many practitioners are prepared to deliver. First, Do No Harm

Heidi M. Hawkins, MAc, LAc Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Those who view multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) as a real syndrome often describe it as an untreatable condition involving permanent brain damage due to chemical exposure. The defining criteria, as listed on the MCS Referral and Resources Inc. website, includes: a chronic condition, with reproducible symptoms, from low levels of exposure to multiple, unrelated chemicals, the symptoms of which improve or resolve if these chemicals are removed from the sensitive person's environment. In my experience, MCS symptoms can include almost anything. Certainly headaches, neurological dysfunction and digestive problems are common, as are urinary dysfunctions; menstrual complaints; irritability; sensitivity to noise, light and electromagnetic fields; skin disorders; emotional problems; and cognitive disorders. Almost any symptom can be caused by MCS (and usually every system is affected) in traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis. People with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome or attention deficit disorder all have some degree of chemical sensitivity. Sometimes the connection is apparent: a discrete exposure followed by a distinct reaction. However, most sensitivities and allergic reactions are not distinct because many exposures are more or less continuous.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity A NEW MECHANISM OF DISEASE? Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is an ailment, or a family of ailments, that has very real consequences for tens of millions of Americans. MCS has been recognized by its symptoms for 50 years because MCS sufferers in many geographical areas, researchers studying them, and doctors treating them, have reported a remarkably consistent picture of disease. However, because MCS sufferers react to chemicals at levels that are hundreds or thousands of times lower than allowable occupational exposures, traditional toxicology dictates that their symptoms cannot be caused by chemical exposures. Nor is MCS a true allergy because there are no IgE-mediated reactions involved, so allergists don't know what to make of it. In sum, because MCS does not fit any of the three currently-accepted mechanisms of disease infectious, immune system, or cancer traditional medicine has not known how to explain MCS, and so has often labeled it "psychogenic" originating in the patient's mind. This has left MCS sufferers in limbo. Told they are crazy, or imagining their disease, or making it up, they find themselves passed from physician to physician without any satisfactory answers and often without relief from their very real distress. (Some MCS sufferers DO have psychological symptoms, but that doesn't necessarily mean their disease ORIGINATES in their mind.) Forty percent of MCS sufferers report having seen more than 10 medical practitioners.

Definition
Multiple chemical sensitivity-also known as MCS syndrome, environmental illness, idiopathic environmental intolerance, chemical AIDS, total allergy syndrome, or simply MCS-is a disorder in which a person develops symptoms from exposure to chemicals in the environment. With each incidence of exposure, lower levels of the chemical will trigger a reaction and the person becomes increasingly vulnerable to reactions triggered by other chemicals. Medical experts disagree on the cause of the syndrome, and as to whether MCS is a clinically recognized illness. In a 1992 position statement that remained unchanged as of early 2000, the American Medical Association's Council on Scientific Affairs did not recognize MCS as a clinical condition due to a lack of accepted diagnostic criteria and controlled studies on the disorder. A more recent discussion of methodological problems in published studies of MCS, as well as recommendations for patient care, may be found in the 1999 position paper on MCS drafted by the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM). As of 2003, however, many researchers in Europe as well as the United States regard MCS as a contemporary version of neurasthenia, a concept first introduced by a physician named George Miller Beard in 1869.
Description
Multiple chemical sensitivity typically begins with one high-dose exposure to a chemical, but it may also develop with long-term exposure to a low level of a chemical. Chemicals most often connected with MCS include: formaldehyde; pesticides; solvents; petrochemical fuels such as diesel, gasoline, and kerosene; waxes, detergents, and cleaning products; latex; tobacco smoke; perfumes and fragrances; and artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. People who develop MCS are commonly exposed in one of the following situations: on the job as an industrial worker; residing or working in a poorly ventilated building; or living in conditions of high air or water pollution. Others may be exposed in unique incidents.

Chapter Eleven: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity
Does PB Lead to MCS?
Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is a putative condition without a widely accepted clinical case definition, in which persons report new subjective sensitivity to low-level exposures to multiple chemicals and foods, typically following a (self-reported) environmental exposure to pesticides, organic solvents, or building remodeling. The condition has also recently been termed "toxicant-induced loss of tolerance" (TILT) (Miller, 1997; Miller, Ashford, et al., 1997). Symptoms referable to multiple organ systems are reported by subjects with MCS; these include ear-nose-and-throat, CNS, GI, genitourinary, skin, and musculoskeletal symptoms, among others (Davidoff and Keyl, 1996; Miller and Mitzel, 1995). Many ill veterans report new intolerances to chemicals (Gordon 1997), and some studies are underway to further assess chemical sensitivity in ill PGW veterans (Fiedler, Kipen, et al., 1996). The lack of a clinical case definition for either MCS or illnesses in PGW veterans complicates examination of a connection between these two phenomena. Nonetheless, several factors are consistent with a connection between illnesses in some PGW veterans, and "toxicant-induced loss of tolerance," or MCS. Similar exposures, namely to acetylcholinesterase-inhibiting agents, characterize ill PGW veterans and many MCS patients. Some work is beginning to suggest mechanisms by which cholinergic exposures, experienced by some PGW veterans, could induce chemical sensitivity. These mechanisms include partial kindling of the limbic system and alteration of nasopharyngeal mucosal function. Studies have found that similar EEG abnormalities may characterize persons with selected AChE inhibition exposures seen during the PGW (sarin, OP pesticides) and persons with MCS, though it has not been shown that ill PGW veterans with consistent symptoms share these EEG abnormalities (neither has it been shown that they do not). MCS - Multiple Chemical Sensitivity

Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), where people report being exquisitely sensitive to a wide range of organic chemicals, is almost always described as being "controversial." The main source of this supposed controversy is that there has been no plausible physiological mechanism for MCS and consequently, it was difficult to interpret the puzzling reported features of this condition. As discussed below, this is no longer true and consequently the main source of such controversy has been laid to rest. There still are important issues such as how it should be diagnosed and treated and these may also be allayed by further studies of the mechanism discussed below.
MCS in the U. S. appears to be surprisingly common. Epidemiologists have studied how commonly MCS occurs in the U. S. and roughly 9 to 16 % having more modest sensitivity. Thus we are talking about perhaps 10 million severe MCS sufferers and perhaps 25 to 45 million people with more modest sensitivity. From these numbers, it appears that MCS is the most common of what are described as "unexplained illnesses" in the U. S. Those suffering from severe MCS often have their lives disrupted by their illness. They often have to move to a different location, often undergoing several moves before finding an tolerable environment. They may have to leave their place of employment, so many are unemployed. Going out in public may expose them to perfumes that make them ill. They often report sensitivity to cleaning agents used in motels or other commercial locations. Flying is difficult due to jet fumes, cleaning materials, pesticide use and perfumes.

Dubious Allergy-Related Practices:
Clinical Ecology and the Feingold Diet
William T. Jarvis, Ph.D. Clinical ecology is a nonrecognized medical "specialty" centered around the notion that a wide array of common physical and psychological symptoms can be triggered in susceptible persons by low-level exposure to chemicals or foods. Patients are said to be suffering from "environmental illness," "multiple chemical sensitivity," "brain allergy," "food addiction," "ingestant intolerance," or total allergy syndrome," or are "allergic to the 20th Century," or "allergic to everything modern." In the mid-1980s, clinical ecologists began calling themselves "environmental medicine specialists." [1] In the mid-1990s, "multiple chemical sensitivity" became the most often used term to describe a syndrome of symptoms perceived by people who believe themselves to be adversely affected by a wide variety of substances. Kurt describes these in detail [2]. Clinical ecology was founded by Theron Randolph, M.D., who diagnosed "environmental illness" in himself and married one of his patients. Both believed that eating ordinary food would make them ill. The couple won a case brought against them by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for deducting $3,000 of their $6,000 food bill for the year (1971), which they had spent on "organically grown" foods to avoid adverse reactions [3].
