Multiple Chemical Sensitivity- Heightened Senses Network is an online chemical injury support group and forum for those who have been chemically injured and suffer from any of the following chemically related illnesses: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), Environmental Illness, Sick Building Syndrome, Toxic Injury, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Gulf War Syndrome among many other forms of chemical injury. MCS is a disorder triggered by exposures to chemicals in the environment. Individuals with MCS can have symptoms from chemical exposures at concentrations far below the levels tolerated by most people. Symptoms typically occur in more than one area in the body, such as the nervous system and the lungs. Exposure may be from the air, from food or water, or through skin contact. The symptoms may come and go with exposures, though some individuals may have delayed reactions. As MCS gets worse, reactions become more severe and increasingly chronic, often significantly affecting bodily functions. (Envionmental Illness Society of Canada)

Students with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity/Environmental Illness: An Accommodation Challenge

According to reports from campuses and recent conferences, disability support service providers and institutional administrators have seen an increase in requests for accommodations for students with a diagnosis of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity/Environmental Illness, or MCS/EI.
Accommodating students in this disability category on college and university campuses illustrates how disability support specialists are often required to show creative sensitivity paired with sophisticated insight into social issues, public laws, and human needs.
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) defines a person with a disability as anyone with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. If a student's functional ability is severely limited by the symptoms of MCS/EI, he or she would be considered a person with a disability under the ADA, and campus support staff must provide reasonable accommodations so that there will be access to the program.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Chemical-based products are all around: in the clothes we wear, in the food we eat and in the air we breathe. It is not possible to escape exposure. Many people have become sensitized to the chemicals around them. It is estimated that as much as 15% of the population has become sensitized to common household and commercial products.
For some people the sensitization is not too serious a problem. They may have what appears to be a minor allergy to one or more chemicals. Other people are much more seriously affected. Such people have a condition known as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity or MCS. Symptoms of MCS

Toolbox What Is Multiple Chemical Sensitivity? Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is the name given by some to a condition in which various symptoms reportedly appear after a person has been exposed to any of a wide range of chemicals. The exposure may occur as a major event, such as a chemical spill, or from long-term contact with low-levels of chemicals, such as in an office with poor ventilation. As a result of exposure, people with MCS develop sensitivity and have reactions to the chemicals even at levels most people can tolerate. Other names for this condition are "environmental illness" and "sick building syndrome."

MULTIPLE CHEMICAL SENSITIVITIES UNDER SIEGE by Ann McCampbell, MD Chair, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities Task Force of New Mexico. Movies like Erin Brockovich and A Civil Action depict the true stories of communities whose members became ill from drinking water contaminated with industrial waste. Their struggles clearly show how difficult it is for people to hold corporations responsible for the harm they have caused. Whether individuals are injured by exposures to contaminated air or water, silicone breast implants, cigarettes, or other chemicals, their quest for justice is usually a David versus Goliath battle that pits average citizens against giant corporations. When confronted with the harm they have caused, corporations typically blame the victims, deny the problem, and try to avoid responsibility for the harm caused. The corporate response to people with multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) has been no different. People with MCS are made sick from exposures to many common products, such as pesticides, paints, solvents, perfumes, carpets, building materials, and many cleaning and other products. But the manufacturers of these products would rather silence the messenger than acknowledge the message that their products are not safe. To that end, the chemical manufacturing industry has launched an anti-MCS campaign designed to create the illusion of controversy about MCS and cast doubt on its existence. What has been said about the tobacco industry could easily apply to the chemical industry regarding MCS, that is, “the only diversity of opinion comes from the authors with … industry affiliations (1).”

hawk@california.com This web site and my computer have been hacked again and wording in my document has been changed So now I have to remove what is on this page to keep them from altering my words in their favor since I still have a court case pending in Worker's Compensation. All they have to do is remove certain comments that are against them and change the wording a few comments I make and it makes it look like I knew years earlier that I was chemically injured. This is not the first time my site was hacked and changed as you can see in the red here when I found it changed before. This time they changed the words to make it sound like I knew all along that I was chemically injured when it was not until June 1995 that I really began to start having suspicion of chemicals. They also changed information on doctors and so forth. I am hoping that this does not get changed also. Today's date is 6-27-02.
I will be adding more research to this web page on the subject of MCS. Who are your enemies? Simple. Those profiting from chemicals and the injuries they cause. Also those who do not want to pay for the injuries which throws in the insurance companies that handle the liabilities of all the other enemies. We are at war in a sense here people. We have had war declared on us, as was brought out in Jim Moyer's investigative report on PBS called "Trade Secrets". Our children are at risk as they use 1 1/2 times more breathing than adults per pound of body weight. Global Warming is a fact and it is to late to stop it.

Summary discussion of the concept of MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity):
Although knowledgable Clinical Ecologists have recognized MCS for at least 30 years, it has only been within the past year (of 2000) or so that the EPA and the government have admitted that it is a real clinical entity and getting worse every month. Only within the past year has the conventional medical paradigm begun to grudgingly admit to the facts. Considering how hard it is for physicians to grow beyond the "Tolstoy Effect" it will likely take another 20 years for most people's docs to recognize it and THEN they will not be trained to have any idea what to do about it.
See the article about "Modern Medical Interpretation of Stress" on the homepage for how this mechanism works. There are now more than 500,000 chemicals in our environment that never existed on this planet before 100 years ago. Each of these is a burden to our immune system and each additional one magnifies the burden of all the rest. It is now believed that "Gulf War Syndrome" is an example of this combination effect.

Dear All,
My name is Diana Buckland from Australia. I am the Brisbane representative of the Australian Chemical Trauma Alliance - one of the numerous volunteer groups trying to support all the people who have been made ill from chemicals. My son James suffers from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity/Chemically Induced Illnesses. Read his story here
On the 9th July, 2003, South Australia's Upper House, the Legislative Council, voted unanimously to support an Australian Democrat's Motion, The Hon. Sandra Kanck, requesting the Social Development Committee enquire into and report on Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. The Social Development Committee is a standing Parliamentary Committee of six elected representatives, three from the Upper House and three from the Lower House, who regularly investigate issues of public concern. A Parliamentary Enquiry into MCS is a big step forward and a great opportunity for people suffering chemically induced illnesses, and their supporters, to tell their story and present their case to Legislators.  The Enquiry will help to inform the basis for future Public Health Policy and guide reforms in Chemical Regulation.

Sections in the series: My younger son has had significant problems with MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) this past year. He would get head aches and stomach aches from cigarette smoke, car exhaust fumes, pressed wood, new carpet at his doctors office and the new car smell from the inside of a new van we bought. My son and I had both suffered from MCS from time to time in the past, but during those times it was usually after we were on antibiotics. Taking probiotics to restore our normal intestinal flora and eating a diet higher in magnesium foods had helped. But this time around my son seemed to have more complex and harder to treat issues. We had his nutrition levels tested and found he was low in:
  • zinc magnesium the amino acid cysteine
Although I didn't realize it at the time of testing, evidently these are common deficiencies in people with MCS. While most conventional medical doctors are skeptical that MCS even exists

I am unclear at present how much /of this you have to go a specialist for in NZ, or for instance it may be that TRH is only available from an endicrinologist here . From the book: Dr Donald Dudley (retired professor of psychiatry and behavioural sciences and former clinical professor of neurological surgery at the University of Washington) describes his theory of how the brain damage is occurring from chemicals with fewer than 6 carbon fragments in their volatile components (such as formaldehyde, MEK, acetone, gluteraldehyde) :

http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/1741.html
Mac users: please note that our site is optimized for the Safari browser Colds, aches, pains, and other ailments Multiple chemical sensitivity Originally Published: July 21, 2000 Dear Alice, I think my mother has Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, if such a thing exists. It started when she got a bad allergic reaction to a certain brand of carbonless copies at work, but has since ballooned into an allergic reaction to just about everything imaginable. I am really confused as to whether she has a real disease or not. Sometimes she has spent the last two years doing almost nothing but seeing doctors, fighting with Workman's Comp to continue paying for her 'disability,' etc. Alice, your answers have always been straight to the point, and I need a straight answer now. Does Multiple Chemical Sensitivity really exist? Is it all just mental? Dear Reader, Unfortunately, there is no "straight answer" to whether Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) exists. Regardless, your mother obviously has something and deserves sympathetic medical evaluation and treatment. Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is a controversial medical topic. It is manifested differently in individuals who claim to have it, but it is usually characterized by multiple symptoms that occur with low-level chemical exposure. A 1998 report from a U.S. government interagency workgroup notes that there is no key definition of the illness, no protocols for treatment, few published studies on the subject, no information on the projected or real costs, and no federal group convened to study MCS. All of these factors make it difficult to give anyone a "straight answer" on Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.
