    Chapter Eleven: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity
    Does PB Lead to MCS?
Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is a putative condition without a widely accepted clinical case definition, in which persons report new subjective sensitivity to low-level exposures to multiple chemicals and foods, typically following a (self-reported) environmental exposure to pesticides, organic solvents, or building remodeling. The condition has also recently been termed "toxicant-induced loss of tolerance" (TILT) (Miller, 1997; Miller, Ashford, et al., 1997). Symptoms referable to multiple organ systems are reported by subjects with MCS; these include ear-nose-and-throat, CNS, GI, genitourinary, skin, and musculoskeletal symptoms, among others (Davidoff and Keyl, 1996; Miller and Mitzel, 1995). Many ill veterans report new intolerances to chemicals (Gordon 1997), and some studies are underway to further assess chemical sensitivity in ill PGW veterans (Fiedler, Kipen, et al., 1996). The lack of a clinical case definition for either MCS or illnesses in PGW veterans complicates examination of a connection between these two phenomena. Nonetheless, several factors are consistent with a connection between illnesses in some PGW veterans, and "toxicant-induced loss of tolerance," or MCS. Similar exposures, namely to acetylcholinesterase-inhibiting agents, characterize ill PGW veterans and many MCS patients. Some work is beginning to suggest mechanisms by which cholinergic exposures, experienced by some PGW veterans, could induce chemical sensitivity. These mechanisms include partial kindling of the limbic system and alteration of nasopharyngeal mucosal function. Studies have found that similar EEG abnormalities may characterize persons with selected AChE inhibition exposures seen during the PGW (sarin, OP pesticides) and persons with MCS, though it has not been shown that ill PGW veterans with consistent symptoms share these EEG abnormalities (neither has it been shown that they do not). SPECT studies (single photon emission computerized tomography

    Multisystem disorder
Intolerance to foods, chemicals, environmental agents at levels generally tolerated by majority
No objective physical findings; no consistently altered laboratory test
Symptoms diminish with avoidance; recur with exposure. Cullen:
Multiple chemical sensitivities is an acquired disorder characterized by recurrent symptoms, referable to multiple organ systems, occurring in response to demonstrable exposure to many chemically unrelated compounds at doses far below those established in the general population to cause harmful effects. No single widely accepted test of physiologic function can be shown to correlate with symptoms. Ashford and Miller:
The patient with multiple chemical sensitivities can be discovered by removal from the suspected offending agents and by rechallenge, after an appropriate interval, under strictly controlled environmental conditions. Causality is inferred by the clearing of symptoms with removal from the offending environment and recurrence of symptoms with specific challenge. American Academy of Environmental Medicine:
Ecologic illness is a chronic multi-system disorder, usually polysymptomatic, caused by adverse reactions to environmental incitants, modified by individual susceptibility and specific adaptation. The incitants are present in air, water, food, drugs, and our habitat.

Joe E. Heimlich A trend noted by many people has been an increase in what seems to be allergic reactions in the general population. Ranging from congestion to sneezing to more severe reactions such as rashes, breathing problems and worse, these reactions are often non-specific to natural allergens. Some activists and researchers have identified chemicals as potential factors in these reactions. Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is the name given to the broad issue of reactions to specific or cumulative chemicals in the environment. This fact sheet will present a definition of MCS and the related Environmental Illness; explore factors of and criticisms to MCS; and examine the individual's role in reducing potential sensitivity.
    What is MCS?
In theory, MCS is an adverse physical reaction to low levels of many common chemicals. Chemical sensitivity is generally accepted as a reaction by certain individuals to chemicals but debate rages on whether MCS is classifiable as an illness. One of the difficulties in classifying MCS as an illness has been the complex nature of chemicals in the environment and the interaction effects with and within the human body. The length of exposure, the concentration of the chemical(s), and the individual's threshold of resistance are also factors complicating a simple definition. In the relatively few but growing documented cases of severe reactions to chemicals, there seems to be no single stimuli or predictor of reactions. The most severe cases, often called either Environmental Illness or 20th Century Disease, sometimes result in individuals isolating themselves from society, synthetic products, and any type of chemical product.

    Allergies: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity
Question: Two years ago there was a chemical spill at my workplace, and many of my co-workers and I became ill immediately after the exposure. Since then, I haven't been the same. It feels like I can't think as clearly now, and I seem to be allergic to almost everything, including perfumes, cosmetics, detergents and household cleaning products. I heard about multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) on a radio talk show, and I think I am chemically sensitive. When I asked my doctor about MCS, he didn't have much to say about it. What can you tell me about multiple chemical sensitivity? Answer: I can tell you that multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is something of a medical mystery. The medical community is divided over whether or not MCS actually exists. Some physicians acknowledge MCS as a medical disorder that is triggered by exposures to chemicals in the environment, often beginning with a short term, severe chemical exposure (like a chemical spill) or with a longer term, small exposures (like a poorly ventilated office building). After the initial exposure, low levels of everyday chemicals such as those found in cosmetics, soaps, and newspaper inks can trigger physical reactions in MCS patients. These patients report a range of symptoms that often include headaches, rashes, asthma, depression, muscle andjoint aches, fatigue, memory loss, and confusion. Others in the medical community, however, do not accept MCS as a genuine medical disorder. The Centers for Disease Control, for example, do not recognize MCS as a clinical diagnosis. There is no official medical definition of MCS, partially because symptoms and chemical exposures are often unique and are widely varied between individuals. Some physicians are skeptical of concluding that low concentrations of the same chemicals that are tolerated by everyone else can cause dramatic symptoms in MCS patients. The American Medical Association denies that MCS is a clinical condition because conclusive scientific evidence is lacking.

This site was last updated on May 9, 2001 a flame I received a while ago about this page. What is multiple chemical sensitivity? Multiple chemical sensitivity is heightened (or "hyper-") sensitivity to a variety of commonly used chemical products. People with MCS experience physical reactions to products like cologne, after shave, scented hair products, dry cleaned clothing, air freshener products, latex, etc. The types of reactions include difficulty breathing, skin rashes, and migraines, among others. The types of reactions people experience and the substances to which they react differ widely. In arranging accommodations for MCS (as for any disability), it's wise to consult with the individual with MCS. Isn't saying that you have MCS just a pseudo-medical way of saying that you don't like cologne? No. In fact, up until my chemical sensitivity began to manifest itself clearly, I loved cologne and scented products, and used them regularly. It isn't that I dislike cologne it's that it dislikes me ! When I'm around it, my nose and the areas around my eyes start to swell. Later, the migraine hits. Sometimes for days.
