DATGANIAD I'R WASG PRESS RELEASE 7 November 2003 Jane Hutt welcomes mouth cancer awareness week Health and Social Services Minister Jane Hutt has welcomed Mouth Cancer Awareness Week with the campaign’s simple message: "Watch your mouth". Mouth Cancer Awareness Week, from November 9-15, 2003, aims to raise awareness of mouth cancer, which kills about 1,700 people a year in the UK. More than 4,300 new cases of mouth cancer were diagnosed in 1999, the latest year for which figures are available. Moreover, incidence of the disease is on the increase. Men over 40 who are heavy smokers and/or drinkers are at particularly high risk – the combination of smoking and drinking can increase risk up to 15 times. But an increasing number of young people, whose lifestyles don’t include these risk factors, are contracting the disease. Mouth cancer can occur in all parts of the mouth, tongue and lips, whether you have your own natural teeth or wear false teeth. Paul Langmaid, Chief Dental Officer in the Welsh Assembly, said: "People should talk to their a dentist if they have any concerns or sense notice any changes in their mouth. An ulcer which lasts more than three weeks, red or white patches in the mouth or on the tongue, or soreness or swelling can all be danger signs, particularly if they are heavy smokers and/or consuming above normal limits of alcohol. .

See also benign skin lesions melanoma basal cell carcinomas squamous cell carcinomas ... after cancer What are oral and/or facial cancers? Orofacial cancers are cancers of the mouth cavity or face. They can be classified by pathologists as different histological types and more than 80% of the cancers that we see at Addenbrooke’s are squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) that have arisen from the skin (mucosa) of the mouth and lip. How common are oral or facial cancers? Mouth cancer is not one of the most common cancers but it is as common as cervical cancer, and it seems to be becoming more common (we don’t yet understand why this is). Each year, there are over 2,500 new cases of orofacial cancer diagnosed in people living in the UK. This figure might be up to 25% higher because people don’t recognise that they have a small cancer and do not seek help at an early stage. Taken together, oral and facial (orofacial) cancers are the sixth most common cancers worldwide. Are oral and facial cancers becoming more common?

'Open clinic' helps to raise awareness of mouth cancer

Most people aren’t that keen on going to the dentist, but this was one visit that may have helped to save your life. As part of the national Mouth Cancer Awareness Week (11 Nov – 17 Nov), Addenbrooke’s Hospital organised an 'open clinic' in Clinic 8 on Thursday 15 November, for anyone to drop in to have their mouth examined or simply to ask questions about how to prevent mouth cancer. No appointment was necessary and no cost was involved.
Eight out of ten patients don’t realise that cancer can occur in the mouth so they ignore the signs. The campaign, along with the opportunity to drop into the open clinic at Addenbrooke’s helped people recognise the symptoms of this common cancer.
Mr Cheng also took the awareness campaign out into the community by visiting local schools to give a talk about the signs and symptoms of mouth cancer. He was helped in this by some of his past patients who together form a support group called AboutFace. The group aims to help present and future patients and carers cope with the treatment of orofacial cancers and other facial deformities.
The group started last year following patient Marlene Gaunt’s recovery from the rebuilding of her tongue after an operation to remove her cancer. Mr Leo Cheng performed the surgery which allowed Marlene to regain her soprano singing voice. This encouraged both Marlene and fellow patients with orofacial cancers to organise AboutFace.

Oral Sex Linked to Mouth Cancer Oral Sex Department Some cases of mouth cancer could be caused by a virus contracted during oral sex BBC (UK) Then again, somehow you can just hear the scientists unzipping their pants at the end of the study there. It must be hard to maintain your disinterested objectivity when it's a matter of discouraging people from rubbing their warm, wet tongues against your most sensitive parts. Doesn't every researcher in a situation such as this have a conflict of interest? As a scientist, you want truth, but as a living organism, you want pleasure. How do you arbitrate between the two? To be truly objective, sexuality research would probably have to be conducted by robots. Then again, since ultimately robots are programmed by humans, that probably wouldn't work either. Perverted coders would program the bots to get voyeuristic kicks from the sight of their flesh-and-blood subjects getting kinky. Icy mint mouth cancer
Dear Editor,

As with everything printed in your paper, you are also responsible for anything distributed with your paper. Here I am thinking about the advertisements that are neatly folded in your paper a couple of times every week. This bothers me since they litter! But even worse: It disgusted to see the colorful Rooster ad folded in The Daily on Monday. Here I think you, as Editor, should draw a line. It is sickening to hear tobacco advertised. Especially when it is targeted towards a young audience with adjectives like "Icy Mint" and "Bold Wintergreen". This almost seems like a joke but as Editor of The Daily I am sure you are aware of the power of advertising. How many students will take up chewing because of this ad? Probably not very many but you will certainly have more than one new student chewing on your conscience.

Graduate, chemistry
Editor's note: The Daily's Editor in Chief can control only the editorial content of the paper. The advertising department oversees the ads.

Watch your mouth!
Watch your mouth is the theme of this year's Mouth Cancer Awareness Week, now co-ordinated by The British Dental Health Foundation.
The event, which runs from Sunday 9 November to Saturday 15 November is being supported by a wide range of national organisations. These include Action on Smoking and Health, British Dental Association, British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists, British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Denplan, QUIT, Scottish Executive, Welsh Assembly Government and the Northern Ireland Executive. The Foundation believes that now the event is being run by a recognised charity it will have the potential to attract increased support and sponsorship. The aim is to develop the week further in the future.
One death every five hours
Mouth cancer kills approximately 1,700 people in the UK each year - that's one death every five hours - and over 4,300 new cases of mouth cancer were diagnosed in the last year of registration (1999). The numbers have risen alarmingly with a 23 per cent increase over the previous five years and about 13,000 people in the UK are now living under the shadow of this dreadful disease. In fact mouth cancer has a higher proportion of deaths per number of cases than high-profile cancers of the breast, cervix or skin melanomas. There has been little improvement in survival rates over the past 30 years mainly due to late detection of suspicious and precancerous lesions.

The risk is "tiny," in the words of New Scientist magazine, but an international research study concludes that oral sex could cause mouth cancer. About one in 10,000 people develops mouth cancer each year, and more likely causes are smoking and drinking, the magazine points out. Scientists at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) are not recommending any changes in behavior. A particular strain of the human papillomavirus (HPV) a very common source of sexually transmitted infection has been linked to cancer of the cervix. The same HPV16 strain was found in most of the studied cases of oral cancer, according to the IARC researchers, based in Lyon, France.
