Subordination and Defeat
An Evolutionary Approach to Mood Disorders and Their Therapy
by Leon Sloman and Paul Gilbert (editors)
Review by Keith S. Harris, Ph.D. on 1 Jul 2001.
Lawrence Erlbaum; 2000 (ISBN: 080583298X) Although depressed persons would at first hardly enjoy viewing their unpleasant symptoms and behaviors from this angle, the contributors to this volume hypothesize that not only are mood disorders the result of situations or lives that go wrong, but they also often serve important evolutionary purposes. But to understand the adaptive functions of depression (and its cousin, anxiety) holds out the promise of more effective treatment strategies. The titles of the various chapters - - all of which were written by respected authors - - signal the general themes to come. For example, consider Varieties of Submissive Behavior as Forms of Social Defense: Their Evolution and Role in Depression; How the Involuntary Defeat Strategy Relates to Depression; and Subordination, Self-Esteem, and Depression.

Bipolar Disorder
and other mood disorders
BIPOLAR DISORDER, (a.k.a manic depression) is a complex and complicating mood disorder. Yet it can be very interesting, intriguing, and seductive to the person who lives with this. I know, I have bipolar disorder. I've only known for sure I was bipolar for a few years, but I've talked with many who've lived it their whole lives, people who have lost loved ones to the disease by suicide. My own immature experiences seem fragmental compared to others. Here I have decided to come open about this illness. I know there are many text book definitions, and diagnosis of bipolar disorder, but here I have tried to make it sound more personal and more understandable. This information is to inform the public, and those who think their child, parent, or loved one may have a mood disorder. Remember just because these symptoms or experiences may sound like you or someone you know that DOES NOT mean that you have a mood disorder. Seek out a professional who can diagnose you correctly. Thank you!! What is Bipolar Disorder?

Often called a mental condition, although I personally dislike the term. I rather call it a mood disorder, because our minds are in good shape, we happen to be intelligent, sensible people, it is our mood what waves from one extreme to the other, this is why it’s called Bipolar Disorder. Our disposition will vary from mania to depression, sometimes the cycles are not that frequent, and other times we could change drastically in very short time span.
It is my intention on building these pages to create a BIG Bulletin Board, a link to all sites that could be helpful when we, as bipolar, or as family member needs information, support or find a proctor who could lead us when things are not right.
Here you will find all kind of tools to deal and manage this and other mood/emotional conditions thus links, chats, forums and other resources will be available. Come often, since this page is constantly updated.
Hope you the site and that it can be a resource and a shelter.

fifield@nso1.uchc.edu Fatigue Linked To History Of Mood Disorders In Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients Fatigue, a common and debilitating symptom of rheumatoid arthritis, may be up to 10 percent higher in patients who also have a history of depression and anxiety disorders, according to a new study. "Much research has been done tying fatigue to concurrent symptoms in rheumatoid arthritis patients, such as the accompanying pain, sleep interruptions and inflammation," said lead author Judith Fifield, PhD, of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. "Our study suggests episodes of depression and other mood disorders, which occurred as much as three decades earlier, contribute and could be a predictor of fatigue levels in these patients." Fifield and her research team conducted yearly phone interviews between 1989 and 1995 with 415 patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis to assess their levels of fatigue and distress, as well as record their histories of major depression and anxiety disorder. Participants were predominantly upper middle age (average 58 years), married women. The results of the study are published in the February 2001 issue of

A SILENT SCREAM ONE VOICE (SI) Do YOU STILL FEEL ALONE FAMOUS PEOPLE suffer TOO DEPression strikes millions of people but for some reason i still feel like the only one depression can strike anyone at anytime. People handle depression in many different ways. Some people isolate thereself, others are happy go-lucky on the outside, but feel like a zero inside, some throw thereselves into time comsuming projects to escape, others are'nt so lucky they commit suicide. Depression is more then just having the blues,a bad day or waking up on the wrong side of the bed. Depression makes you feel like life has no purpose, like you have no energy, DEFINITION: DEPRESSION One of the most common and treatable of all mental illnesses, clinical depression results from a chemical imbalance in the brain. Many people have transitory feelings of sadness, especially during difficult times. Someone who cannot get over these feelings within two weeks may be suffering from clinical depression.
