Joseph J. Schildchild, a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School in Boston, and his colleagues charted the turbulent psychological histories of 15 mid-20th-century abstract expressionists of the New York School, only one of whom is still alive. The researchers made psychiatric diagnoses based primarily on the artist's medical records, known suicide attempts, and evidence of periodic inability to work or function socially. Four artists - Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Philip Guston, and William Baziotes - suffered recurring bouts of severe depression. Two others - Arshile Gorky and David Motherwell - suffered milder forms of depression and mania. Similar conditions probably also afflicted Franz Klein and David Smith, notes Schildkraut's group.

104. Identifying Symptoms Of Depression
From SAD, PMDD, anxiety and mood disorders, to chronic and postpartum depression, learn about the symptoms of depression in women, men, teens and children.
http://www.symptoms-of-depression.com
Identifying Symptoms of Depression
Of the many different mood disorders, depression is the most common, and one of the most misunderstood. While modern research indicates that brain chemical imbalances cause the condition, many people still believe that chronic depression indicates a weak personality or character flaw. This makes seeking help difficult, as people hesitate before admitting this "weakness" to family, friends or doctors. Imagine the devastation and suffering if people hid a major illness such as cancer from the world.
Mood disorders—especially depression—are very common. Chances are that someone you know, or you yourself, suffers from a mood disorder. And the majority of depressive disorders go untreated. Healing starts with learning to recognize the symptoms of depression in yourself or a loved one.
Symptoms of Depression
persistent sadness or unhappiness
lethargy
loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities
irritability
sudden change in appetite
disruption of normal sleep pattern
physical discomfort difficulty thinking or concentrating thoughts of suicide or death.

Depression
In any given 1-year period, 9.5% of the population, or about 19 million American adults, suffer from a depressive illness. The economic cost is estimated at $30.4 billion a year, but the cost in human suffering cannot be estimated. Depressive illnesses often interfere with normal functioning and cause pain and suffering not only to those who have a disorder, but also to those who care about them. Serious depression can destroy family life as well as the life of the ill person. But much of this suffering is unnecessary.
Most people with a depressive illness do not seek treatment, although the great majorityeven those whose depression is extremely severecan be helped. Thanks to years of fruitful research, the medications and psychosocial therapies that ease the pain of depression are at hand.
Unfortunately, many people do not recognize that depression is a treatable illness. If you feel that you or someone you care about is one of the many undiagnosed depressed people in this country, the information presented here may help you take the steps that may save your own or someone else's life.

Introduction
Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant that is chemically unrelated to any other anticonvulsant or mood regulating medication. Gabapentin received final approval for marketing in the USA on 30 December 1993 and is labeled for use as an anticonvulsant. There is no generic gabapentin as the manufacturer has patent protection. Gabapentin is currently available in about 45 countries worldwide. Gabapentin is an antiepileptic drug indicated as add-on therapy for partial seizures with or without secondary generalisation in patients who have not achieved satisfactory control with, or who are intolerant to, standard anticonvulsants. There are two major reasons why physicians prescribe and patients take gabapentin rather than conventional, better established drugs. Firstly, not everyone benefits from treatment with the older, better known drugs, and secondly some patients find the side effects of the established drugs to be unacceptable. US Prices As of 12 April 1997, the per tablet cost of gabapentin, when ordered in lots of 100 tablets from a national US mail-order pharmacy was:

At this address until the 21st April 2004 there used to be a site www. defeatdepression.org, the only independent site in the UK providing evidence based information to consumers. It is no more. Why - because nobody who could have helped gave a damn. The object of this site was to bridge the gap between science and the consumer in mental health care, especially depression, anxiety and related disorders. The site contained a very extensive amount of information, about recognition, treatment, latest news, research and all the information that we necessary to educate and help consumers. The Government and other bodies have made a commitment to educating consumers, but when it comes to mental health there is apparently no funding depression. We only needed two full time staff. The site was initially funded by several generous and forward looking donors, but since then we have tried all avenues and been unsuccessful. The small amounts of funds have come from individuals who value the site and even if they have been out of work have been kind enough to try and help. This situation is both intolerable and disgraceful and it yet another blow to the large community of people with mental health problems. It also speaks to the stigma surrounding mental illness - had this been a sexy illness I am sure would have had no trouble raising significant funds. Mental health is not sexy it is a silent and often fatal epidemic.

mood disorders in Children and Adolescents by Anne Brown. Many illnesses. How Prevalent are mood disorders in Children and Adolescents?
http://www.narsad.org/news/newsletter/specialreports/archchildmood.html
Mood Disorders in Children and Adolescents
by Anne Brown Many researchers believe that mood disorders in children and adolescents represent one of the most under diagnosed group of illnesses in psychiatry. This is due to several factors:
  • children are not always able to express how they feel, the symptoms of mood disorders take on different forms in children than in adults, mood disorders are often accompanied by other psychiatric disorders which can mask depressive symptoms, and many physicians tend to think of depression and bipolar disorder as illnesses of adulthood.
  • Not surprisingly, it was only in the 1980's that mood disorders in children were included in the category of diagnosed psychiatric illnesses. How Prevalent are Mood Disorders in Children and Adolescents?
    • 7-14% of children will experience an episode of major depression before the age of 15. 20-30% of adult bipolar patients report having their first episode before the age of 20. Out of 100,000 adolescents, two to three thousand will have mood disorders out of which 8-10 will commit suicide.
Depression There is emerging evidence that major depression can develop in prepubertal children and that it is a significant clinical occurrence among adolescents. Recent epidemiologic studies have shown that a large proportion of adults experience the onset of major depression during adolescence and early adulthood.

WELCOME to my website. I'm Rick Maith, L.C.S.W. and I have been a practicing therapist for over 21 years. I have had a practice in Southwest Orlando for over 13 years.
Recently, I moved my practice to a new location that is more conveniently located and accessible to my patients. Additionally, the new office is more private and secluded, which offers my patients an increased feeling of security and confidentiality.
My experience includes working in both inpatient psychiatric hospitals as well as outpatient private practices. I prefer working with people on an outpatient basis because they are choosing to seek help for themselves and it is a more relaxed, comfortable environment.
I am on several insurance panels, see many patients on a private-pay basis (which increases privacy as it does not involve exchange of information about the patient with the insurance company), and will offer a sliding scale for patients if it is necessary and you are eligible.
I look forward to meeting you and assisting you in greatly improving the quality of your life!
