Mitral valve prolapse syndrome- mvp
Mitral valve prolapse syndrome is a medical term describing an abnormal movement of the mitral valve as the heart beats.
Mitral valve prolapse is a medical term describing an abnormal movement of the mitral valve as the heart beats. It is frequently abbreviated as MVP. In order to understand this condition a brief description of the heart, its structure and function, what the mitral valve is and the role it plays in the circulatory system is necessary. bodyOffer(30782) The heart is made of four chambers the right and left atria and the right and left ventricles. The ventricles are the lower chambers the atria are the upper chambers. Each atrium and ventricle combination form a pump. The atrium where blood enters the heart is a collecting camber. It then pumps into the ventricle and out of the heart. Newly oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium, the top and left side of the heart. It is ten pumped through the mitral valve into the left ventricle. It then is pumped throughout the body to nourish the bodys cells. Blood is so vital as it transports oxygen nutrients and removes waste products. The entire circulatory system takes sixty seconds and will continue your entire lifetime. It is critical that blood flows in the correct direction from the chambers by contractions. The valves protect the heart from an incorrect flow. They are flaps that separate each chamber. At the appropriate time they open to allow blood to flow through, and close to prevent the blood form following backwards. The mitral valve allows blood to flow from the left atrium into the left ventricle.

Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome What is a Syndrome?
Syndrome is a name for a group of symptoms that happen together. A group of symptoms may collectively indicate a particular condition. If you experience several or more of the symptoms associated with mitral valve prolapse, you may have the Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome. What is the Cause of the Syndrome?
The exact cause of the syndrome is still unclear to researchers, but studies indicate that the mitral valve prolapse syndrome is associated with a slight imbalance of the Autonomic Nervous System, called Dysautonomia. What is the Autonomic Nervous System and Dysautonomia?
The autonomic nervous system is very complex. It is our "automatic" or "unconscious" nervous system, and it controls and affects most, if not all, of our body functions and systems such as our heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, sweating, gastrointestinal motility and secretions, digestion, sexual reflexes, to name a few. The autonomic nervous system has two divisions: the Sympathetic nervous system and the Parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system tends to increase and accelerate our body functions. The parasympathetic nervous system tends to relax and slow things down. These two divisions of the autonomic nervous system work together maintaining a continuous, fine-tuned balance of our body functions.

25. What Is Mitral Valve Prolapse?
The mitral valve prolapse syndrome is sometimes called dysautonomia. Physical Findings Unique to the Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP) Syndrome.
http://www.mvprolapse.com/mvp.html
What is Mitral Valve Prolapse?
Located between the upper left chamber and lower left chamber of the heart, the mitral valve is made of two flaps of tissue that normally open and close in a rhythmic way to allow blood to flow in one directionfrom the atrium (upper chamber) to the ventricle (lower champer). The left ventricle is responsible for much of the heart's pumping and propels oxygen-rich blood into the arteries. The arteries then carry the blood throughout the body. When the mitral valve doesn't open and close properly, the flaps may "billow" backward slightly into the upper chamber during the heart's contraction (fig. B). This is called mitral valve prolapse (MVP). As a result of MVP, a clicking sound can often be heard by the doctor listening to the heart sounds with a stethoscope. In MVP, sometimes small amounts of blood may leak backward into the upper chamber of the heart because the valve does not close normally. This causes a "heart murmur," although the heart itself is working normally. The heart has an adequate blood supply, even with the MVP. Prolapsing mitral valves do not usually get worse over time.

M itral valve prolapse (MVP) occurs in an estimated 15 million Americans. Because its clinical manifestations are extremely variable, MVP may be difficult to recognize. The disorder is usually asymptomatic but, in certain patients, it may be an important cause of incapacitating chest pain and refractory arrhythmias. The abnormal components of the mitral valve apparatus are possible sites for endocarditis, and severe mitral regurgitation can result from endocarditis, ruptured chordae, or both. Definition, Etiology and Pathology An estimated 15 million Americans, or between 3 and 6 percent of the population, have mitral valve prolapse. MVP is defined as the systolic billowing of one or both mitral leaflets into the left atrium, with or without mitral regurgitation. It is the most common form of valvular heart disease, occurring in 3 to 6 percent of the population.

Mitral Valve Prolapse A Case History A 41-year-old white woman arrived at Uchee Pines Institute in a wheelchair. She had had increasingly severe chest pains, palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, and anxiety over the previous 18 months. Electrocardiogram was normal; echocardiogram confirmed MVP. Several days were spent in reassurance and tapering off medications. She was given hawthorn berry tea, Epsom salts, and catnip tea as needed through the day for anxiety; hops and catnip tea allowed her to sleep without medication. She began a graduated walking program with her Lifestyle Counselor at her side for reassurance. Each day she went further and gained confidence. By the end of the third week she was walking 6-8 miles a day and was almost totally asymptomatic. She donated her wheelchair to the Institute and returned home with no further significant symptoms. The advent of echocardiography, which for the first time allowed the cardiologist to see what was going on inside the heart in real time, allowed the diagnosis of mitral valve prolapse. It involved between 25 and 30% of all women in the U.S., most being diagnosed in the 25-35 age group.

Taking Control: Living With the Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome > Customer Review #1: Excellent resource

I too have purchesed the newer books on MVPS, but I keep coming back to this one. This is the only book out there written by a professional with lots of years experience. I think the word has gotten out about her research and we all look forward to Dr. Scordos results. This book is an excellent resource and is loaded with very useful information. I agree with the other reviewer you said it is their Bible! When I get scared, I reread what she suggests to doworks everytime.
Taking Control: Living With the Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome > Customer Review #2: Mitral Valve Prolapse This book has been of more value to me than any other information I have read on the subjects of Mitral Valve Prolapse and Panic Attacks. I have suffered from both of these syndromes for years and it was with great relief that I found Dr. Scordos book. Her book is filled with helpful suggestions, from the coping skills, breathing techniques, exercise programs, to the dietary changes. I have had told my family physician about Dr. Scordos book and how helpful it has been, and have had my parents and husband read it as well in order for them to better understand what I have suffered from for so many years and to enlighten them on the link between Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome and its relation to Panic Disorder. Thanks so much, Dr. Scordo, for writing this book.

Mitral Valve Prolapse and Thyroid Disease

by Mary Shomon

If you are experiencing heart palpitations, heart pounding, dizziness, sleeplessness, or panic attacks, and there doesn't appear to be an explanation for it, you may have mitral valve prolapse syndrome, or MVP syndrome. Recent medical research has found that the prevalence of mitral valve prolapse is substantially greater in patients with autoimmune thyroid disorders such as Graves' Disease and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. One medical reference that supports this finding includes the research reported in the journal Cardiology
Major Symptoms of MVP include:
Pounding, fast heartbeat
Palpitations

Low tolerance for exercise Chest pain Panic attacks Headaches, migraines

By Richard P. Abben, M.D.
Director, Arrhythmia Center
Cardiovascular Institute of the South
Take two commonly occurring medical conditions, put them together and what do you have? In the case of mitral valve prolapse syndrome, you may have a nonexistent disorder that causes a lot of people a good deal of very real discomfort. Mitral valve syndrome links a common and generally benign heart valve malfunction and an equally prevalent neurological stress response to explain a pattern of symptoms that may owe their existence largely, if not exclusively, to our harried lifestyle. Whatever its explanation, mitral valve prolapse syndrome is rarely dangerous, and the measures required to control it are fairly simple though not 100 percent effective. Mitral valve prolapse is a condition in which the valve between the upper and lower chambers on the left side of the heart closes imperfectly. The definition of MVP has been made more specific in recent years, so only about one person in ten currently meets the criteria. Previously it was as high as one in three. Common as it is, a majority of those who have the condition aren't even aware of it. Of the 40 percent who do have symptoms, fatigue, heart palpitations, headache, chest pain and anxiety and panic attacks are the usual complaints, with intermittent bouts of extreme fatigue being by far the most common. In a very small percentage of cases, the mitral valve functions so poorly that it can cause potentially dangerous arrhythmias and other problems which will necessitate surgical repair or even valve replacement.

Questions in The Heart Forum are being answered by doctors from
The Cleveland Clinic Heart Center, consistently ranked the #1 Heart Center in America. Subject: Use of Inderal for Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome
Topic Area: Mitral Valve

Question Posted By: Pat on Wednesday, February 24, 1999
I have been using Inderal PRN for about 10 years. I was dx with prolapse mitral valve after reporting symptoms of occassional tachycardia, nausea, vertigo, weakness, and diaphoresis - usually in the middle of the night and almost always when I am ill. I was advised by my cardiologist to take inderal when I first felt that the symptoms would start (I usually can tell at least a few minutes prior). I was originally told to take 40mg but I never felt comfortable with that and have been using 10mg with success in that I avoid the symptoms or have symptoms lasting only a few minutes.
I am in a new city and asked for a refill of inderal today and this is the first time I have had an internist say it is inappropriate and unnecessary. What is your opinion? Dear Pat, thank you for your question. I don't believe that taking beta blockers (inderal) intermittently for any condition is helpful. With mitral valve prolapse, you may experience palpitations, shortness of breath, or chest pain that are not harmful. With MVP, these symptoms are a nuisance and may be caused by an abnormal neural connection to the heart. The inderal may have worked for you in the past, so if you are not satisfied with your new doctor's decision, then you should get a second opinion. However, I think you will do fine with or without inderal.

Question: My doctor recently put me on Atenolol for high blood pressure and mitral valve prolapse. I'm 36 and in relatively good health otherwise. I do, however, have migraine headaches that I take Excedrine (acetaminophen/caffeine) for. Thus far, this is the only medicine that I've found to work with a consistent results. I also suffer from allergies to pollens at various times of the year. My doctor told me what not to take for stuffy/runny nose, and to stay away from caffeine (which I've done for s number of years), but neglected to tell me what to use when I have these types of attacks. I've been suffering all night long and now all day as well, and still no call back from my doctor. I need to know if it is all right to continue taking the Excedrine while I'm taking the Atenolol, and what in the world do I take for congestion and runny nose/watery eyes? Thanks for your help! Thanks again.

The Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome/Dysautonomia Survival Guide > Customer Review #1: great book - very helpful information

WOW! After a lifetime of problems that no doctors could figure out I finally read this book which told me all about myself. I cant believe how accurately it discusses the problems Ive had since childhood. Every doctor who discounts Mitral Valve Prolapse should be required to read this book. Here I finally found a cardiologist and fellow sufferers who have explained to me that I have an illness and Im not crazy. They offer practical self-help as well as medical intervention when it is necessary. Thank you Society for MVPS!!
The Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome/Dysautonomia Survival Guide > Customer Review #2: Full of helpful ideas Unlike a few others, I found that there was some good concrete evidence in this book. I have found that the kind of evidence a researcher looks for is quite hard to find on the topic of Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome. The original writer and researcher in this field, Lyn Frederickson, wrote the first and definitive book on this topic back in 1988. I would disagree with another reviewer and say that Ms. Scordos book (rather than leading the way) basically restates Ms. Fredericksons work while discounting the need for medication and relies totally on exercise , meditation and alternative therapies. This new book delves more deeply while crediting Ms. Frederickson and gives the latest information including biological, physical and medicational aspects of the syndrome. Although Ms.Fredericksons book is now out of print I think it only proper to give her the credit she deserves.
