Heading Off Migraine Pain
by Tamar Nordenberg In the first quarter of Super Bowl XXXII last January, Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis was hit hard and walked off the field with a towel draped over his head. A developing migraine made the sunlight difficult to bear. So how did a person suffering from migraine, a condition that can cause debilitating pain, return after halftime to score the winning touchdown and earn Most Valuable Player status? The answer: He recognized the early warning signs and immediately took an effective drug to control his pain. Michael John Coleman, founder of Migraine Awareness Group: A National Understanding for Migraineurs, or MAGNUM , appreciates the challenges migraine sufferers face. Coleman has himself suffered with bouts of severe migraine headache pain since age 6. During an attack, he says, "I felt like I was being beaten up by a gang." Coleman's attacks used to last 72 hours or more; a couple lasted more than two weeks straight. "It was nightmarish, when I look back at it. I don't know if I could live through that again." Not Your Usual Headache More than 26 million Americans suffer from the neurologic disorder of migraine, according to the American Medical Association. No medical test exists for migraine, so the diagnosis is based on having some or all of the following symptoms:

Hoofdpijn en migraine in begrijpelijke taal de diagnose, een persoonlijke getuigenis en tips.

MIGRAINE: Migraine... ingebeelde ziekte?
Niets is minder waar.

What is it?
A migraine is much more than a bad headache. A migraine headache is a recurrent, throbbing headache usually felt on one side of the head. Migraines usually begin in early childhood, adolescence, or young adult life. Migraine pain can be excruciating, and may incapacitate you for hours or even days. Migraine headaches may be preceded by a warning sign. Warning signs may include: flashes of light, dizziness or numbness. The signs are often accompanied by severe nausea, vomitting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. What causes it? Migraine headaches are caused by a rapid widening and narrowing of blood vessel walls in the brain and head. This causes the pain fibers in the blood vessel wall to become irritated. Blood vessels in the scalp are often involved. Some of the events that have been reported to causes migraine headaches are: hunger, cheese, changes in weather, nuts, fatigue, avocados, oral contraceptives, chocolate, menstrual periods, food cured with nitrates (e.g., hot dogs), emotional stress, meat tenderizers (e.g., MSG), and alcoholic beverages. It is not known why some individuals have migraines and others do not. What are some common symptoms?

The pain of a migraine headache is often described as an intense pulsing or throbbing pain in one area of the head. It is often accompanied by extreme sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and vomiting. Migraine is three times more common in women than in men. Some individuals can predict the onset of a migraine because it is preceded by an “aura,” visual disturbances that appear as flashing lights, zig-zag lines or a temporary loss of vision. People with migraine tend to have recurring attacks triggered by a lack of food or sleep, exposure to light, or hormonal irregularities (only in women). Anxiety, stress, or relaxation after stress can also be triggers. For many years, scientists believed that migraines were linked to the dilation and constriction of blood vessels in the head. Investigators now believe that migraine is caused by inherited abnormalities in genes that control the activities of certain cell populations in the brain.

Causes of Migraine Headaches
by Sue Dyson Anyone who has ever suffered from migraine will be only too aware of the effects of the illness on daily life. According to the National Headache Foundation — an organization set up to help migraine and other headache sufferers — American industry loses around $50 billion from absenteeism and medical expenses, all linked to headache pain. In fact, headaches account for about 157 million lost working days in a year. But we are not just talking about inconvenience and economic difficulties; the cost in terms of individual suffering is infinitely higher. Apart from the practical problems they face, sufferers and their friends and families are often in a state of anxiety and bewilderment, particularly in the days following initial diagnosis.

2004: Entering Our Eighth Year My New Year's Message to the BAM Community There are some great surprises in store that are very exciting, and some true landmark events and measures of progress that I will be absolutely thrilled to announce to you all! We've come such a long way since I started one small page back in 1997back when there was absolutely nothing out there for those who suffered from this debilitating neurological disease, back there when those who suffered were isolated and spread out around the globe, each thinking they were truly alone. But there is so much more work to be done, so many more people to reach around the world who are scared, confused, and feeling like nobody else in the world understands how they suffer or how they feel. Many people still have no diagnosis, no neurologist, no treatment, no support network, no confidants, nobody who understands. Many are left without jobs, afraid they cannot care for their children or drive, left without income or insurance.
