My name is Kelly. I am the mother of two wonderful children. This website is about my son Steven...
Steven age 9 months
He was born with microphthalmia (small eye), partial aniridia (absence of iris) and retinal coloboma (closure defects). These conditions left him unilaterally sighted. I'm making this website in the hopes of connecting with other people who are unilaterally sighted, have family members like this, or people with these eye conditions. Five and a half years ago all I knew about Microphthalmia was that it meant small eye. I've been online for several years now and have made many eye friends. There is such a great comfort in knowing that there are other people dealing with the same situations that you are dealing with. That there are people who have handled what you're about to go through, and being able to help someone deal with something that you have already been through. It was the love and support of my family and friends that helped me deal with what I had once thought was a nightmare. In particular, my mother, who would think nothing of dropping everything and driving two hours, sometimes in the middle of the night, when I needed her. I have learned that the love of a family can help you deal with anything.

FRANCHESCA
Last modified May 28, 2001
Franchesca was born on August 2, 1986, with anophthalmia, a condition in which the child has no eyes. An MRI when she was six indicated that she may have some optic nerve development. The above picture was taken when she was 9 years old. She is now 14 years old and still very tiny for her age. Franchesca has had numerous surgeries in the attempt to provide her with prosthetic eyes. These surgeries were done incorrectly, and during some of them she was not anesthetized. She was given Phenobarbital daily for 18 months as a sedative to keep her from doing things which would interfere with the healing process. Franchesca is classified educationally as mentally retarded and speech handicapped, in addition to being totally blind. It is not known how much her speech difficulties and blindness interfere with her ability to display her intellectual abilities. She has a large vocabulary and is quite expressive; however, her words are difficult to understand much of the time. I met Franchesca when she was two and a half years old. I was one of several teenagers providing child care at a local support meeting for parents. Franchesca and her two older sisters were among the children for whom we were caring. Franchesca was very active but still unable to walk. Shortly after I met her, she began wearing AFO's, a special kind of brace designed to correct the turning inward of her feet. When I met Franchesca, she could not talk or perform any self-care skills.

Microphthalmia, Anophthalmia and other related eye disorders Hi, I'm Diann. I decided to build a site for Microphthalmia and Anophthalmia when our youngest son, Jacob was diagnosed with Microphthalmia with cyst, and Coloboma of the right eye when he was 3 weeks old. Jacob at 8 months old: 1 month after getting his first artificial eye. Jacob at 7 1/2 years old: Searching for information on Jakes condition was extremely frustrating and disappointing. There didn't seem to be much out there to help satisfy my urgency to know more about what our son was born with, not to mention what we can do to help him. It wasn't until I started corresponding with other families around the world, that I felt less alone. Being able to talk with others who know what you are going through and what your about to go through makes all the difference in the world! As I look back and write our initial story and prepare other family's stories, I can't believe how far we all have come *smile* Through the internet I have found wonderful friends that have helped me through hard frustrating times as well as joyous times. We e-mail, chat, and make plans to meet sometime, somewhere in the near future, and I hope one

Affected dogs have prominent third eyelids and small eyes which appear recessed in the eye socket (enophthalmos). A defect early in development results in the smaller than normal eye (microphthalmia). This is often associated with other eye abnormalities, including defects of the cornea, anterior chamber, lens and/or retina. Microphthalmia is also seen with coloboma - a cleft in a portion of the eye, particularly the iris. Microphthalmia with multiple defects (ocular dysgenesis) is often seen in dogs with a merle hair coat with excessive amounts of white. The eyes are commonly different colours. Partial deafness may also be part of this syndrome. These dogs are frequently blind. Cataracts (opacity of the lens) often occur with microphthalmia, causing some degree of visual impairment. How is microphthalmia inherited?

    Anophthalmia and Microphthalmia Eye Disorder
Anophthalmia and microphthalmia are terms that are often used interchangeably. Microphthalmia is a disorder in which one or both eyes are abnormally small, while anophthalmia is the absence of one or both eyes. These rare disorders develop during pregnancy and can be associated with other birth defects. Causes of anophthalmia and microphthalmia Causes of these conditions may include genetic mutations and abnormal chromosomes. Researchers also believe that environmental factors, such as exposure to X-rays, chemicals, drugs, pesticides, toxins, radiation, or viruses, increase the risk of anophthalmia and microphthalmia, but research is not conclusive. Sometimes the cause in an individual patient cannot be determined. Treatment of Anophthalmia and Microphthalmia There is no treatment for severe anophthalmia or microphthalmia that will create a new eye or restore vision. However, some less severe forms of microphthalmia may benefit from medical or surgical treatments. In almost all cases improvements to a child's appearance are possible. Children can be fitted for a prosthetic (artificial) eye for cosmetic purposes and to promote socket growth. A newborn with anophthalmia or microphthalmia will need to visit several eye care professionals, including those who specialize in pediatrics, vitreoretinal disease, orbital and oculoplastic surgery, ophthalmic genetics, and prosthetic devices for the eye.

    Definition
Anophthalmia is the complete absence of an eye. Microphthalmia is an eye that has an abnormal smallness. Description Anophthalmia is caused by a defect in embryonic development. The total absence of an eye is extremely rare and often a clinical sign associated with a broad range of genetic disorders or, more commonly, a sporadic mutation. Sporadic transmission occurs in the affected individual due to a genetic abnormality. It is not passed on from the parents, but usually due to a combination of environmental and genetic influences. More commonly anophthalmia clinically presents as a small cyst. The defect, which causes anophthalmia, is an absence of the optic vesicle, a structure important for eye development. The genetic abnormality usually occurs during weeks one to three after conception. It is estimated that the incidence of microphthalmia occurs 0.22 times per 1,000 live births. Anophthalmia can occur during adult life but not associated with a genetic cause. Microphthalmia refers to an abnormally small eye. This clinical sign is often associated with autosomal dominant or recessively transmitted genetic disorders. Most disorders dominantly inherited with microphthalmia are associated with some visual capabilities in infancy and early childhood. Microphthalmia may be isolated (the only presenting sign) or associated with a range of ocular or systemic abnormalities. Isolated cases of microphthalmia may be sporadic or inherited. There is a variable degree of
