The MSO1 trial
This section gives information about a research study called the MS01 trial. It is for you if you have mesothelioma and are thinking about taking part in the MS01 trial, or if you are a friend or relative of someone who has been asked to take part. If you are a patient your hospital doctor or nurse may wish to go through this information with you. The MS01 trial is looking at whether chemotherapy could be a helpful treatment for people with pleural mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma is a type of cancer that starts in the membranes that surround the lung: these membranes are known as the pleura. The trial is being carried out in cancer centres all over the UK. It was started in 2002 and about 840 people with mesothelioma will take part over the next few years. The aim of the trial is to see whether using chemotherapy drugs can improve the length and quality of life for people with mesothelioma. Currently, it is not clear whether chemotherapy is helpful or not, for people with mesothelioma. If you have been diagnosed as having mesothelioma, your cancer specialist may have asked if you would like to take part in the MS01 trial. This section explains what the trial involves. You may find it helpful to show the information to your family, friends or GP and to discuss the trial with them before you make up your mind.

What is malignant mesothelioma?
Malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura) or abdomen (the peritoneum). Most people with malignant mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they breathed asbestos.
Malignant mesothelioma is a type of lung cancer that affects the delicate lining of the lung. Mesothelioma is a rare condition However, numbers are expected to continue to rise until 2020, and then gradually diminish.
Who can get the malignant mesothelioma?
In more than 85% cases of malignant mesothelioma is caused by inhaling asbestos fibres, although how these get to the chest lining is unclear. The time between exposure to asbestos and developing malignant mesothelioma is extremely long – usually between 20 and 40 years.
Malignant mesothelioma is therefore more common in men. The risk increases with the amount of asbestos exposure. However, it is important to recognize that only a very few people who have been exposed to asbestos will develop malignant mesothelioma. Often people are worried because they have been in a building where asbestos has been present, sometimes as paneling. In this situation the risk is minimal because without dust, asbestos is harmless.

Mesothelioma
Malignant mesothelioma is an uncommon, but no longer rare, cancer that is difficult to diagnose and poorly responsive to therapy. Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos -related diseases.
A layer of specialized cells called mesothelial cells lines the chest cavity, abdominal cavity, and the cavity around the heart. These cells also cover the outer surface of most internal organs. The tissue formed by these cells is called mesothelium.
The mesothelium helps protect the organs by producing a special lubricating fluid that allows organs to move around. For example, this fluid makes it easier for the lungs to move inside the chest during breathing. The mesothelium of the chest is called the pleura and the mesothelium of the abdomen is known as the peritoneum. The mesothelium of the pericardial cavity (the "sac-like" space around the heart) is called the pericardium.
Tumors of the mesothelium can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). A malignant tumor of the mesothelium is called a malignant

Who I Am
Why I Am Bothering Millie- 1938-1999
It is because of this attitude of depraved indifference on the part of asbestos manufacturers that asbestos litigation is in its heyday. Actually, the heyday seems to have passed since companies have discovered that they can declare bankruptcy and be protected from litigation and then pay pennies on the dollar when the ruling finally comes down years after the person who brought the suit has died. Then too, Congress is working toward some final, binding resolution that is supposed to placate all parties. My opinion regarding this solution can be easily discerned by the title of the next section.
I guess one of the better reasons for this exercise is to prevent the exposure of my grandchildren to this unnecessary danger. My son has been exposed to some degree and I can't see any reason for another generation to be affected, hence the title of the page.

http://www.mirg.org/asbestos/
About Asbestosis
Asbestosis is a lung condition, often referred to as a "diffuse pulmonary fibrosis" which results from the inhalation of asbestos fibers. It is one of a number of diseases categorized as occupational lung disease or environmental lung disease. A unique aspect of asbestosis that distinguishes it from other fibrotic diseases (such as silicosis) is the presence of asbestos bodies and fibers in the lung tissue. Additionally, asbestos bodies and fibers have been detected in small numbers beyond the lung: in tonsils, thoracic and abdominal lymph nodes, pleura, peritoneum, liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, small and large intestines, esophagus and stomach. Typically, asbestos particles are inhaled into the lungs by exposed individuals in large quantities. The body's defense mechanisms respond to asbestos fibers by attacking them, which forms the characteristic fibrosis which can often be detected with an x-ray or CT Scan. Asbestosis is a disease process which is progressive and irreversible in nature. It typically leads to subsequent respiratory disability. In the most severe cases, asbestosis may lead to death from pulmonary hypertension and cardiac failure. Asbestosis is generally considered to be a restrictive lung disease. The fibrosis which forms reduces the lung's ability to expand and exchange oxygen (distensibility). This "stiff lung" condition reduces all volumes and capacities of the lungs. A person with asbestosis tends to breathe more rapidly as a compensatory reaction to his or her diminished lung capacity.

Asbestos, a known toxin since the 1930's, is an inexpensive fibrous material that is extremely durable and heat resistant. Because of these properties it was heavily used in industry throughout the United States. After its carcinogenic (cancer-causing) properties were discovered many industries irresponsibly continued to use asbestos, putting the public, their workers and families at risk. Even today asbestos-containing products still remain in buildings, ships, industrial facilities and other environments and continue to expose the public to this extremely dangerous material. And the EPA has stated, asbestos "presents an unreasonable risk of injury to human health;" even low levels of asbestos exposure can trigger Mesothelioma, Asbestosis, Pleural disease and lung cancer, diseases that are almost exclusively caused by asbestos.

Before his death from asbestos cancer, Stephen C. Horetz wrote this message to his fellow veterans...
"In late November of 1999, I was diagnosed with mesothelioma asbestos cancer ). While trying to learn more about this type of cancer, I learned it was caused by exposure to asbestos . It took me a few days to remember where I had been exposed to asbestos. I had served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960 and remembered working with and around asbestos while serving on several ships. Little did I know that some day I would come down with this dreadful disease because of mixing and working with asbestos."
"It is my hope that this organization will be informative, educational, and helpful to others who might find themselves ill with this disease. I wish I had known there was such a cancer and more about it earlier."
