    What is malignant mesothelioma?
Malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura) or abdomen (the peritoneum). Most people with malignant mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they breathed asbestos. A doctor should be seen if a person has shortness of breath, pain in the chest, or pain or swelling in the abdomen. If there are symptoms, the doctor may order an x-ray of the chest or abdomen.

    Mastering Mesothelioma
Researchers are traking down genes and molecular markers linked to mesothelioma-a deadly asbestos-related cancer.
    by Lori Oliwenstein
There are several misconceptions about mesothelioma.
organs. That membrane, the mesothelium, is also called pericardium where it covers the heart, peritoneum where it surrounds most of the other abdominal organs, and pleura where it envelops the lungs, which is also where it most often turns cancerous.
Mesothelioma is not caused by smoking, as lung cancer so often is. Instead, mesothelioma is tied almost exclusively to the mineral asbestos. Of the 2,000 new cases of mesothelioma reported in the United States each year, 70 to 80 percent can be traced to tiny, airborne shards of asbestos, which in the past was used in the production of construction materials ranging from cement to shingles to siding, and was extensively used as insulation.
Mesothelioma also is not a disease of the past. Although protections against occupational asbestos exposure have been in place since the 1970s, asbestos-related cancers such as mesothelioma can take 30 to 50 years to show up, according to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.
Which leads to the final misconception: Mesothelioma is not under control. In fact, more often than not, by the time there are symptoms, the mesothelial tumors are large and entrenched and pumping out fluid that fills the chest and compresses the lungs, resulting in organ failure and death. That is why the survival of mesothelioma patients is so poor: an average of 18 months after diagnosis, at best.

    16. MESOTHELIOMA

    http://www.your-online-outlet.com/
    MESOTHELIOMA
The early symptoms of mesothelioma are generally non-specific, and may lead to a delay in diagnosis. Sometimes resembling viral pneumonia, pleural mesothelioma patients may present with shortness of breath, chest pain and/or persistent cough; some patients show no symptoms at all. A chest x-ray may show a build-up of fluid or pleural effusion (discussed below). The right lung is affected 60% of the time, with involvement of both lungs being seen in approximately 5% of patients at the time of diagnosis. Less common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include fever, night sweats and weight loss. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include pain or swelling in the abdomen due to a build-up of fluid, nausea, weight loss, bowel obstruction, anemia or swelling of the feet.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THESE SYMPTOMS MAY BE CAUSED BY MESOTHELIOMA OR BY OTHER LESS SERIOUS CONDITIONS. ONLY A DOCTOR CAN MAKE A DEFINITIVE DIAGNOSIS.
    Pleural Effusions
One of the most common symptoms of mesothelioma is a pleural effusion, or an accumulation of fluid between the lining of the lung and the chest cavity. As the volume of fluid increases, shortness of breath, known as "dyspnea", and sometimes pain may occur. The primary goal in treating this effusion is to relieve shortness of breath, prevent recurrence and minimize discomfort.
Doctors use x-rays and CT scans to identify effusions and help determine a course of treatment. MRIs are used to a lesser extent in evaluating pleural effusions, but may be helpful in assessing the extent of chest wall involvement by tumor.

    Coping Strategies
A diagnosis of mesothelioma can be overwhelming, but it is important to remember that you are not alone. Here are some strategies and resources that may make dealing with cancer easier:
  • Know about your illness.
Ask your doctor to explain about mesothelioma. If your primary physician is not a specialist, ask about a referral to someone who is. Find out the type and stage of your illness, as well as what treatment options will be available to you. You may also wish to research on your own through your local library or the Internet. Some sources of information are: Mesothelioma Web at 1-877-367-6376 (Toll Free) or on the Internet at www.mesotheliomaweb.org , The National Cancer Institute at 1-800-4-CANCER or at www.nci.nih.gov , or the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 or at www.cancer.org
    Take charge of your life.
Ask questions about recommended medical procedures, including the nature of surgery, possible side effects of chemotherapy, and availability of clinical trials specific to your disease. The more you know, the more actively you can manage your course of treatment. Go to your appointment with a list of questions already prepared. Patients often find that their perspective changes for the better when they take the driver's seat of their life, even sometimes using humor as a tool to get them through difficult times.

    Mesothelioma: Questions and Answers
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer in which malignant (cancerous) cells are found in the mesothelium, a protective sac that covers most of the body's internal organs . Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles.
  • What is the mesothelium? The mesothelium is a membrane that covers and protects most of the internal organs of the body. It is composed of two layers of cells: One layer immediately surrounds the organ; the other forms a sac around it. The mesothelium produces a lubricating fluid that is released between these layers, allowing moving organs (such as the beating heart and the expanding and contracting lungs ) to glide easily against adjacent structures. The mesothelium has different names, depending on its location in the body. The peritoneum is the mesothelial tissue that covers most of the organs in the abdominal cavity. The
