Diabetes Linked to Menstrual Problems
posted 04/16/03
Women younger than 30 with type 1 diabetes may be more likely than others to have problems with menstruation, including longer and heavier periods. Compared with their nondiabetic sisters and unrelated women, women with type 1 diabetes reported that they also tended to begin menstruating at a later age and went through menopause relatively early, according to a report in the April issue of Diabetes Care. In addition, women with type 1 diabetes tended to become pregnant less often and have more stillbirths than women without the condition, Dr. Elsa S. Strotmeyer of the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania and colleagues report. They noted that the study findings may not necessarily apply to women with type 1 diabetes who are now younger than 30. That's because the findings are based on information from women who were largely in their 40s, and reflected menstrual and reproductive health from years ago, Dr. Strotmeyer explained. She said that some of the participants' reported menstruation problems may have stemmed from poor control of their insulin and glucose levelsa problem that may have been more common in years past, when the study participants were in their 20s.

Complementary Medicine - Treating ailments
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) by Jacqueline Young What is it? Signs and symptoms Causes ... Self-help What is it? A range of physical and mental symptoms that occur each month in women in the week, or two, prior to the start of menstruation. Signs and symptoms Irritability, pre-menstrual tension (PMT), mood swings, anxiety, food cravings, water retention, abdominal bloating, breast tenderness, abdominal pain and cramps, backache, headache and fatigue. Causes PMS is associated with low levels of progesterone and excess of oestrogen, low levels of the hormone serotonin, nutritional deficiencies and blood sugar imbalance. Food intolerances and candida may also play a part. Orthodox medical approach Painkillers may be given to ease pain and diuretics to relieve water retention. Vitamin B6 and Evening Primrose Oil (Gamma Linoleic Acid) are often recommended to aid hormonal balance. In severe cases progesterone treatment, given during the second half of the cycle, or oestrogen treatment, may be given to correct hormonal imbalance or the Pill may be prescribed to suppress ovulation. Antidepressants may be prescribed when emotional symptoms are present. Lifestyle and dietary advice may be given. Complementary approaches
  • Dietary Therapy - Nutritionists recommend regular meals to maintain blood sugar levels, reducing intake of sugar, refined carbohydrates, animal fats, tea, coffee and colas - and increasing intake of whole grains, fresh vegetables, fruit and

Premenstrual Syndrome
Facts, Disease Prevention and Treatment Strategies
PMS Facts and Statistics
As many as 90% of all women will have to deal with the aches, pains and emotional stress of Premenstrual Syndrome or PMS at some time during their reproductive years while 30% to 40% of all women will have symptoms distressing enough to interfere with their everyday lives. Some of the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome include abdominal bloating, acne, anxiety, backache, breast swelling and tenderness, cramps, depression, food cravings, fainting spells, fatigue, headaches, insomnia, altered sex drive, swelling of the fingers and ankles, and personality changes such as drastic mood swings, outbursts of anger, violence, and thoughts of suicide. On the average, menstruation begins at twelve or thirteen years of age and ends with menopause. The typical cycle lasts about 28 days with the first day of the cycle being the first day of bleeding. The menstrual cycle is regulated by changes in the endometrium or the membrane lining of the uterus and is divided into the follicular and the ovulation and secretory phases.

Question Posted By: teen mom on Saturday, October 05, 2002
I am 22 and just had my son in December of 2000. Approximately three months later I had a cervical biopsy done because of abnormal cells found. I have not had a period since. The doctor did an ultrasound and did not find any blood pockets in my uterus, but he said my cervix was scarred shut. Every month for three days at the same time I have all of the symptoms of my menstrual cycle, but they are much more intense. I have tremendous cramps and tenderness in my stomach area, feel nauseated, have headaches, feel sore all over my whole body, and I am very moody. This month I thought I felt cysts on both sides of my stomach area. I take up to three ibuprofen and this just allows me to function halfway. The tenderness is so bad that no pressure can be put on my stomach for those three days. I have also been having persistent headaches for about two months and lymphnodes under my arm keep getting swollen. I have a few questions.
1. Is it possible that the surgeon doing biopsy did something wrong?

I was wondering about Provera. I stopped taking my birth control pills
about 1 and a half years ago (due to high blood pressure). I did not get
my period. In June, my primary care doctor gave me Provera to jumpstart it.
I got my period. By August, I had not had my period, but had a bacterial
infection, followed by a yeast infection, and then followed by two months of bleeding. I had to go to a Gynecologist, and she put me on Provera permenantly. One problem, I had abnormally heavy periods for three months, and then I started having miagranes with my periods. I have had to cut back on the Provera (every other month) because of the side effects I get. Just the other day, I thought I got my period, however I found out that the blood (in the toilet and on the tissue)

Previous Index Do Menstrual Problems Increase After Tubal Ligation? Tubal ligation is the most common method of contraception used in the United States. It is considered safe and highly effective. However, since the early 1950s, the existence of a "post-tubal ligation syndrome" has been debated. The hallmark of this syndrome is an increased risk of menstrual abnormalities. Moreover, results from one study indicated that women who have this surgery were four to five times more likely to have a subsequent hysterectomy; results from a second study showed that 41 percent of the women who underwent hysterectomy had a previous tubal sterilization. To make further determinations about this issue, Peterson and colleagues reported data from the U.S. Collaborative Review of Sterilization, a large prospective study evaluating the long-term safety and effectiveness of tubal ligation. The U.S. Collaborative Review was started in 1978 and included women between 18 and 44 years of age who were undergoing tubal sterilization at one of several institutions throughout the country. A second group of women whose partners had undergone vasectomy was added to the study later. All women were followed by annual telephone interviews for five to 14 years and were asked to describe their three most recent menstrual periods. Six features of periods that were addressed were duration of bleeding, length of cycle, bleeding or spotting between cycles, cycle irregularity, amount of menstrual pain and amount of bleeding. The findings from the tubal sterilization group were compared with findings from the group whose partners had undergone vasectomy. The primary outcomes of interest were changes in various features of the menstrual cycle.
