Symptoms include discomfort during periods and a heavy flow of blood or other discharge. Drawing pains may be felt in the pelvic region, thighs, and legs. Vitex agnus-castus is also known as Chasteberry and agnus castus. It helps with female hormonal imbalances. In women it is used in the treatment of PMS irritability, breast pain and water retention. Often used with sage for hot flushes. When coming off the pill it has been known to help restore a regular menstrual cycle, or when the cycle has been disrupted.
Hormonally, it acts on the pituitary gland in the brain stimulating the release of lutenizing hormone, which stimulates the production of progesterone. Hence its somewhat dampening effect on men! It is still used in some monasteries to help the monks keep to their vows of chastity. The best time to take this herb is in the morning, before breakfast.
Kava Kava helps relax the uterus and so is used to treat menstrual cramps. It can be very effective in a relatively short time, by working like a local anaesthetic and relieving pain. Kava Kava contains two pain-relieving chemicals that are considered as effective as aspirin.

Menstruation is part of a women's life, and it is a healthy phenomenon although healthier have its inconveniences and annoyances during menstruation. Your period should come regularly every 28 days, 3-4 days duration without clotting of blood or so, and the blood you should expect to lose is equivalent to about a quarter of a cup. Some women get irregular periods, or periods that come regularly but with longer intervals in between. Others have a "flood" of blood each month, which makes normal life difficult and potentially embarrassing. A few women have a combination of problems! Unusual periods do not necessarily mean there is anything wrong with you, but may be very annoying. AmenorrhoeaÂ…. When periods disappear For more sexually active women in their reproductive years, the absence of periods is a clear signal of pregnancy. And in older non-pregnant women, amenorrhoea may mean that menopause is approaching or has arrived. In both groups of women, amenorrhoea is perfectly normal. However, in some cases amenorrhoea can indicate an underlying medical problem.
Primary amenorrhoea is present when a young girl has not started to menstruate even at age 16. This may be because she has some hormonal imbalance or developmental problem, which can often be treated with Homoeopathic medicines. Amenorrhoea, more commonly affects women who have previously had regular menstrual cycles. A variety of reasons can cause secondary amenorrhoea such as hormonal imbalance, excessive exercise, underweight loss or weight gain, stress or discontinuation of the birth control pill.

Background Goals Any abnormal bleeding over the age of 40 or over the age of 35 in high risk patients should be primarily investigated by evaluation for mechanical causes or cancer. Usually an endometrial biopsy is performed, although imaging techniques such as ultrasound or hysterosongraphy can also be used. Once endometrial cancer is ruled out by biopsy, the patient can be treated with hormonal therapy under the presumption of endocrinological causes of the abnormal bleeding. If there is no response to this however, a direct evaluation of the endometrium such as hysteroscopy should be performed because of the high incidence of polyps and fibroids that disturb the endometrial cavity and may produce abnormal bleeding. Daily articles from Reuters Health: breaking news on health issues, drug approvals and recent discoveries. Type 1 diabetes linked to menstrual problems Last Updated: 2003-04-10 13:00:42 -0400 (Reuters Health) NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women younger than 30 with type 1 diabetes may be more likely than others to have problems with menstruation, including longer and heavier periods, new research suggests. Compared to their non-diabetic sisters and unrelated women, women with type 1 diabetes which most often shows up in childhood or in young adulthood reported that they also tended to begin menstruating at a later age and went through menopause relatively early. In addition, women with type 1 diabetes tended to become pregnant less often and have more stillbirths than women without the condition, the authors report in the April issue of Diabetes Care. Study author Dr. Elsa S. Strotmeyer of the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania noted that the study findings may not necessarily apply to women with type 1 diabetes who are now younger than 30. That's because the findings are based on information from women who were largely in their 40s, reporting on their menstrual and reproductive health from years ago, Strotmeyer explained.

PMS and Cramps
This complaint seems to be the most common menstruatal problem. Cramps range from mildly annoying to intense, all-encompassing, double-you-over pain. The cause of PMS and menstrual cramping seems to be a drop in the level of blood calcium (when blood calcium levels drop symptoms include: muscle cramps, headaches, body aches, sleeplessness, water retention and depression, hmmmm sounds like all the common symptoms of PMS!). In menstruating women, blood calcium level can begin to fall off about 10 days (give or take) prior to the start of the menstrual period. It stands to reasons, then that you should increase your intake of calcium at this time. Calcium supplements are important (use a biochelated form), but so is naturally occurring calcium in foods and herbs. Some foods and herbs that have a good amount of easily assimilatable calcium are things like: yogurt, kelp (and other seaweed), sesame seeds (and tahini which is made from sesame seed) kale, spinach, parsley, raspberry leaf, comfrey leaf, alfalfa, oatstraw and nettle. Since calcium and vitamin-D work in synergy and alfalfa and nettles contain a goodly amount of both a possible calcium rich tea might be: 2 parts alfalfa, 3 parts nettles, 2 parts oatstraw, 3 parts rasberry leaf and 1/2 to 1 part horsetail. Infuse 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons per cup, the best way is to make a quart the night before, place the loose herbs in a quart jar, pour 1 quart of boiling water over the herbs, cover loosely and let sit all night. Next morning, strain out the herbs and put the liquid into a thermos or refrigerate. Drink the quart during the course of the day. The Uni-Tea Company has a great blend also, the tea is called FemininiTea and contains Raspberry Leaves, Nettles, Ginger, Licorice, Chamomile, Sarsaparilla, Rosemary, Rose Petals, Yellow Dock, Uva Ursi, Dong Quai, Peony, Lavender, and Angelica.
