CDC cautions against confusing viral meningitis with West Nile
Story Tools RELATED Centers for Disease Control and Prevention SPECIAL REPORT Symptoms How it's spread Reducing risks See the spread ... Special Report ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) Federal officials are cautioning doctors and other health workers not to confuse West Nile virus and a mild illness commonly known as viral meningitis that has appeared this summer in outbreaks across the country. Seven states Arizona, California, Georgia, Idaho, Oregon, South Carolina and Texas have reported an unusually high number of viral meningitis cases this year. About 20 other states also have reported cases of the mild viral disease, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday in its journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Symptoms for both West Nile virus and viral meningitis can include fever, sensitivity to light and a stiff or sore neck. But West Nile virus tends to affect older people, and viral meningitis strikes children or young adults. "The seasonal occurrence (for viral meningitis) is similar to what we would see with West Nile, so there is the opportunity to potentially confuse what the cause of the illness is," said Dr. Stephen Ostroff, deputy director of the CDC's National Center for Infectious Diseases.

Meningitis
Topic Overview
What is meningitis? Meningitis is an infection of the tissues (meninges) and sometimes the fluid (cerebral spinal fluid, or CSF) that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis results in swelling of the brain tissue and in some cases the spinal tissue ( spinal meningitis ). When brain tissue swells, less blood and oxygen reach brain cells. The infection occurs most often in infants, young adults between the ages of 15 and 24, older adults, and people who have a long-standing health condition, such as a weakened immune system Meningitis can range from mild to life-threatening. The severity usually depends on the organism causing the infection and a person's age and overall health. What causes meningitis?

Ohio starts vaccinating students
Ohio health officials plan to vaccinate 5,600 students and teachers against meningococcal disease ALLIANCE, Ohio (CNN) Thousands of students began getting vaccinations Friday against a bacterial outbreak that has left two teen-agers dead and a third hospitalized from meningitis-related illnesses. The state health department plans to inoculate 5,800 students and teachers at six high schools around Alliance. School superintendent Lou Ramunno told CNN the six schools were chosen because interactions among the children there were most frequent. By the time the vaccination program closed Friday, Ohio Health Commission spokeswoman Beth Gianforcaro said at least 4,200 people had received inoculations. She said anyone who missed Friday's immunizations could go to their local health deparment to get vaccinated. Health officials said the bacteria can only be transmitted by close contact, such as kissing or sharing utensils, not by casual contact.

My wife lived through this tragedy in a major Swiss hospital where she worked. The autopsy of the child revealed the tubercular nature of the ‘viral’ meningitis following a BCG inoculation, but all the assistants and nurses had received very clear instructions to say nothing or risk terrible consequences. As with all secret societies, the law of silence is absolute among doctors!" Dr Jean Elmiger (Rediscovering Real Medicine ISBN 1862041997) "When I heard about the 14 year old boy who died of group C meningitis I remember wondering how soon beforehand he had had his BCG vaccination (another vaccine with a ‘live’ organism)."-
