About meningitis and septicaemia
Meningitis Septicaemia How do people catch it? Symptoms ... Prevention is better than cure
Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain. It is very rare but very serious, although if it’s picked up and early enough, most people make a full recovery. It can be caused by either viruses or bacteria . The bacterial type is less common. There are two main types of bacterial meningitis – meningococcal and pneumococcal. See also Meningitis C
Septicaemia is a form of blood poisoning, which may be caused by the same germs that cause meningitis. Septicaemia is very serious and must be treated straight away. The germ gets into the body through the throat and passes into the blood stream. In some cases, the germs multiply in the blood stream and cause blood poisoning. This may happen on its own or with an attack of meningitis.

These are rare illnesses, which cause inflammation of the brain lining, which can be fatal. Unfortunately, the symptoms can be easily be mistaken for flu or a bad cold. Worse still, it is more difficult to be certain with babies and young children. If you are not sure, you must call NHS Direct
The Hib and meningitis C immunisation has reduced the number of people suffering from some types of meningitis and septicaemia. Unfortunately, we do not have vaccines for every type of meningitis and septicaemia, so we all still need to watch out for the symptoms.
Symptoms Babies under two. They can be difficult to wake. Their cry may be high-pitched and different from normal. They may vomit repeatedly, not just after feeds. They refuse feeds, either from the bottle, the breast or by spoon. Their skin may appear pale or blotchy, possibly with a red or purple rash which does not fade when you press a tumbler glass or a finger against it. The soft spot on top of your baby's head (the fontanelle) may be tight or bulging.

Meningitis kills 400 in Burkina Faso
Story Tools OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (Reuters) A meningitis outbreak in the impoverished West African country of Burkina Faso has killed more than 400 people this year so far, health officials said. A Health Ministry statement published late on Wednesday said 2,433 cases had been reported, giving a mortality rate of 16.4 percent. Last year, 1,743 people died from meningitis out of 14,453 reported cases. Meningitis usually strikes in the first few months of the year in the dry season. It is transmitted by direct contact. Overcrowding and hot, dusty climates favor the disease. Meningitis, which has symptoms including intense headaches, fever, nausea, vomiting and a stiff neck, kills between 10 and 50 percent of its victims, most of whom are children. Survivors can suffer brain damage. Burkina Faso is at the heart of a region dubbed Africa's "meningitis belt" which stretches from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east and comprises 18 countries frequently hit by meningitis epidemics. Last year, a particular strain of the disease codenamed W135 caused the majority of the deaths. The strain is not usually prevalent in Burkina and was believed to have been brought to the country by Muslim pilgrims returning from Saudi Arabia.

Meningococcal infections can spread fast and lead to life-threatening diseases, especially meningococcal C disease, which has a higher rate of mortality and sequelae than meningococcal disease caused by other serogroups in developed countries. It’s a rare, but frightening disease; and it can be overlooked since in the beginning and in very young children it is often difficult to spot. The symptoms can be initially unspecific and flu like, but invasive disease can result in disability or even more tragic consequences. Rates of meningococcal disease are highest in infants who have not yet developed protective antibodies. Primary prevention of the disease by an effective immunisation for all age groups is the desired approach. Demonstration of immunological memory is a very important feature of the vaccines, as well as persistence of antibodies.

Need another reason to lecture your teen about keeping partying to a minimum? Researchers have now linked smoking, second-hand smoke, and binge drinking to an increased chance of contracting deadly bacterial meningitis. Meningococcal disease strikes about 3,000 Americans each year and is responsible for approximately 300 deaths annually. During the past decade, the number of bacterial meningitis cases among adolescents ages15 to 24 has doubled to 600 each year. It is estimated that 100 to 125 cases occur annually on college campuses, and 5 to 15 students die as a result. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that certain groups of college students had six times the risk of contracting the potentially fatal bacterial infection. What did these students have in common? Many lived in dormitories on campus, were vulnerable to upper respiratory infections, and were exposed to passive and active smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. What is meningitis?

Meningitis Viral

Protest death sparks meningitis concern
Story Tools HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library Meningitis YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Miami (Florida) Florida or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? MIAMI, Florida (AP) A volunteer medic who treated injured demonstrators at a free trade meeting last week died Wednesday of bacterial meningitis, sparking a health investigation to determine whether others were exposed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday that no other cases had been confirmed. About 40 to 45 people who had close contact with the victim were given antibiotics, said CDC spokesman Llelwyn Grant. "We just don't know at this time how far-reaching this will be," Grant said. Neisseria meningitis, spread through respiratory droplets, can be fatal in up to 20 percent of all untreated cases, but the CDC spokesman said it probably would not be spread in a crowd simply through breathing. The meningitis victim, a 23-year-old New Jersey man, was not identified by authorities, but protest organizers said it was Jordan Feder. Feder treated protesters who had been sprayed with tear gas and pepper spray, his friend Patrick McKale said.

What is Meningitis
Meningitis is an infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. It can be potentially fatal particularly if the individual develops blood poisoning or Septicaemia. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses or even fungi.
Viral meningitis is more common than the bacterial form, but generally less serious although it can be very debilitating. It can be caused by many different viruses. Some are spread between people by coughing or sneezing, or through poor hygiene. Others can be found in sewage-polluted water. The incubation period can be up to three weeks (i.e. the time between contact and developing the illness).
