Meningitis
  • What Is It? Symptoms Diagnosis Expected Duration ... Additional Info
  • What Is It? Meningitis is a viral or bacterial infection of the coverings (meninges) of the brain and spinal cord. Viral meningitis usually is caused by a group of viruses called enteroviruses. It commonly occurs in children, and goes away on its own after seven to 10 days. Bacterial meningitis can occur in adults or children, and is fatal if not treated promptly. In the United States, between 2,400 and 3,000 cases of bacterial meningitis occur every year.

Immunizations ordered to prevent meningitis-related outbreak
ALLIANCE, Ohio (CNN) Health officials Tuesday ordered a mass immunization program for thousands of people against a bacterial infection that can cause meningitis after two teens died of the infection. Last weekend more than 37,000 residents flocked to two hospitals to get preventative antibiotics. Distribution stopped Monday morning when health officials said the exposure period had expired. The prophylactic antibiotics were given after two youths a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl died over Memorial Day weekend of Neisseria meningitides group c, a strain of bacteria that can cause meningitis. The boy died of meningitis; the girl died of meningococcemia, an infection of the blood that is more dangerous than meningitis. The two students attended the same high school. CONCORD, New Hampshire (AP) Scientists are examining a strain of bacterial meningitis and trying to make links among five teenagers who contracted the brain-swelling disease. One of them has died. State health officials planned to alert emergency room personnel statewide Monday about the cases and urge them to watch for signs of additional infections, according to state epidemiologist Jesse Greenblatt. He said it is unusual to have so many cases in such a short period. Meningitis, which causes the brain to swell, is spread by fairly intimate contact, such as kissing or sharing utensils or water bottles. It is not easily transmitted through sneezing and coughing. Rachael Perry, 18, died Saturday at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where the woman, from the southern community of Bennington, had been hospitalized since Christmas, Greenblatt said.

Dorm freshmen at highest meningitis risk, CDC says
June 1, 1999 Web posted at: 12:34 p.m. EDT (1634 GMT) From Medical Correspondent Rhonda Rowland PHILADELPHIA (CNN) College freshmen living in dormitories have a more than six times greater risk of bacterial meningitis than other college students, according to a new national study released Tuesday. The findings were reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at the annual meeting of the American College Health Association (ACHA). Bacterial meningitis inflames the tissue and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal canal and causes flu-like symptoms headache, stiff neck and fever.

    Meningitis
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Meningitis is inflammation of the sheaths and membranes ( meninges ) covering the brain and the spinal cord . Although the most common causes are infection (either bacterial or viral ), chemical agents and even tumor cells may cause meningitis. Encephalitis and brain abscess can complicate infective meningitis. Major bacteria that cause meningitis are Streptococcus pneumoniae Haemophilus influenzae staphylococcus and meningococcus The classical symptoms of meningitis are headache, neck stiffness and photophobia (the trio are called " meningism "). An altered level of consciousness or other neurological deficits may be present depending on the severity of the disease. A lumbar puncture to obtain cerebrospinal fluid is usually indicated to determine the cause and direct appropriate treatment. Meningitis is a medical emergency, being a condition with a high mortality rate if untreated. The cause is most commonly a bacterial infection sensitive to antibiotics . Patients with suspected meningitis should optimally have a lumbar puncture procedure after a CT scan (which will help rule out a possible raised intracranial pressure that may cause a serious or fatal brain herniation during lumbar puncture) and broad spectrum antibiotics should be urgently started before the culture studies are completed. If lumbar puncture can not be performed because of raised intracranial pressure (likely due to edema or concomitant brain abscess), a broad spectrum intravenous antibiotic should be started anyway which can later be replaced with more specific antibiotics depending on the results of blood and cerebrospinal fluid culture and sensitivity studies.

Meningitis is one of the most terrifying diseases. It can be fatal in hours yet its early symptoms resemble self-limiting conditions like flu and colds. BBC News Online's health team offers a guide to the disease, the issues it raises for the health service and the science employed to defeat it. Meet the disease

Meningitis is an inflammation of the brain lining and is mostly found in bacteria and viruses - the bacterial form is the more life-threatening.
    The 1999 panic

Meningitis outbreaks are generally more likely during the winter months - the winter of 1999 in particular saw several serious outbreaks.
    Preventive measures

Cases of meningitis increased in the late 1990s - focusing more attention on finding a vaccine against the main strains of the disease.
    International picture

Few countries have begun a routine vaccination campaign against meningococcal meningitis, but some have tighter guidelines on how to respond to epidemics.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the brain lining, or meninges, which can cause serious disability or death. Septicaemia is the blood poisoning form of the disease. Are there different types of meningitis?
Meningitis produces a characteristic rash Yes. Meningitis is usually caused by either bacteria or a virus. A small number of cases can be caused by fungal infection. Viral meningitis is more common than bacterial but is rarely life-threatening. It is usually caught through poor hygiene, coughing and sneezing. It cannot be treated with antibiotics but most people who have it make a full recovery. What about bacterial forms of the disease? Signs of meningitis in babies: Tense or bulging soft spot on front of the head Vomiting/refusing to feed Irritable Breathing rapid or laboured Extreme shivering Purple bruising or pin prick marks Cold hands or feet Blotchy or blue skin Floppy, or stiff, jerky body

W hen a newborn or young infant presents with fever and lethargy or irritability, meningitis is a primary concern. Bacterial meningitis has an incidence of about 20 to 100 cases per 100,000 live births during the newborn period. Aseptic meningitis is even more common. Although most types of aseptic meningitis do not cause serious sequelae, some types result in significant morbidity and mortality if not properly diagnosed and treated. Physicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for these treatable causes. TABLE 1
