Coping With Meniere's Disease
Meniere's is a disease of the inner ear, characterized by episodic vertigo attacks, hearing loss, tinnitus, and fullness or pressure in the ear. An attack typically consists of a period of dizziness or vertigo which may produce nystagmus (a beating of the eyes from side to side), nausea, vomiting, sweating and all the symptoms normally associated with extreme motion sickness. With many other disabilities, some portion of a normal life can be continued. Vertigo disrupts virtually every aspect of life, since the patient loses the ability to do anything normally, especially when movement is involved.
Washington University Medical School Department of Otolaryngology There is "currently" no cure for Meniere's Disease. However, there are ways to help manage and sometimes control the symptoms. There are many options to try.
Like with any chronic disease, it helps to know that you are not the only one who suffers the same symptoms. You are not alone. Therefore, this site has been established to help fellow Menierians cope, and so they can help each other cope. Support is critical. Support is golden. Meniere's Disease
Meniere's disease typically causes attacks of vertigo, hearing loss, and tinnitus. The 'attacks' can vary in severity, and in how often they occur. Permanent hearing loss and tinnitus may eventually develop. There is no cure, but treatment can help to ease and prevent symptoms.
What is Meniere's disease? Meniere's disease is a condition of the inner ear. About 1 in a 1000 people develop Meniere's disease. It can affect anyone at any age, but it most commonly begins between the ages of 20 and 50. One ear is commonly affected at first. The other ear also becomes affected at some stage in about 4 in 10 cases. What are the symptoms of Meniere's disease? Symptoms which 'come and go' Meniere's disease typically comes in 'attacks' of the following symptoms:
  • Dulled hearing in the affected ear(s). The amount of hearing loss varies.
  • Vertigo. This is dizziness with a spinning sensation. It can be quite severe and make you feel sick or vomit. Vertigo can develop with little or no warning. You may feel very dizzy and ill. You may need to go to bed until it passes.
  • Tinnitus.

Definition
Meniere's disease is a disorder of the labyrinth in the inner ear. The labyrinth is a system of cavities and canals in the inner ear that affects hearing, balance, and eye movement.
Causes
An increase in the volume or pressure of fluid in the labyrinth can result in Meniere's disease. The cause of these fluid changes is unknown. Possible causes may include:
  • Part of the labyrinth ruptures, allowing fluid in different compartments to mix Scar tissue causes a blockage in the labyrinth Inner ear injury due to:
    • Viral infection Syphilis , a type of sexually transmitted disease Autoimmune disorders Blood vessel problems High cholesterol or other fats in the blood Hormonal disorders

Researchers funded by Defeating Deafness are currently conducting a major project to improve understanding of the causes of Meniere's (or Ménière's) Disease. With 10% of those affected having a family history of the condition, many cases are thought to have a genetic component. DNA, which had been extracted from blood samples in many normal and affected family members, has helped to pinpoint at least one gene that could be involved. The Defeating Deafness project will attempt to find an abnormality in this and related genes, paving the way for more effective diagnosis and treatments. However, much work remains to be done. Researchers still have little understanding of the causes of Ménière's/ Meniere's Disease, and Defeating Deafness hopes to fund further work which can develop our knowledge of this distressing condition, leading, eventually, to a cure. What is Meniere's disease?
Meniere's (say "men-ears") disease is the name of a problem of the inner ear. No one knows the cause. Meniere's disease has something to do with fluid in canals of the inner ear. Although it can be troublesome, Meniere's is not contagious and it isn't fatal. However, it's a "chronic" problem, which means that it lasts a long time. People with Meniere's disease don't have symptoms all the time. When symptoms occur, it's called an "attack." Attacks may happen often, or only sometimes. Attacks usually last from 20 minutes to 2 hours or longer. Meniere's disease usually occurs in only one ear. It affects both ears in only about 30% of patients. Return to top
What are the symptoms during an attack?
The symptoms of Meniere's disease include dizziness, a feeling of fullness in the ear and tinnitus (a roaring sound in the ear). The dizziness is described as a spinning or whirling feeling and may cause problems with balance (feeling unstable while walking). Some people feel nauseated and vomit during an attack (because of the spinning feeling). Some people also notice some hearing loss, especially with sounds that have a low tone.

    Meniere’s Disease
    Description
In 1861, French physician Prosper Meniere described a condition that now bears his name. Meniere's Disease (MD) is a disorder of the inner ear associated with a change in the volume of fluid inside a portion of the inner ear called the labyrinth, which includes the membranous and bony labyrinth. It causes episodes of vertigo, tinnitus (a constant noise in one ear, often described as a buzzing or humming sound), a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear, and fluctuating, progressive low-frequency hearing loss. A typical attack of Meniere's disease may be preceded by fullness or aching in one or both ears. Hearing fluctuation or tinnitus may also precede an attack. A Meniere's episode generally involves severe vertigo (spinning), imbalance, nausea, and vomiting. The average attack lasts two to four hours. After a severe attack, most people find that they are extremely exhausted and must sleep for several hours. In some people, Meniere's episodes may occur in clusters; that is, several attacks may occur within a short time. In other cases, weeks, months, or even years may pass between episodes. Between the acute attacks, most people are free of symptoms or note only mild imbalance and tinnitus.

D.J.M. Mateijsen Chapter 13. Summary and conclusions Chapter 2. History and definition A database was designed together with a special data management office. The database itself and the collection of the data were controlled and secured by the office. Statistical analysis of data was performed with the SPSS 10.0 program and the help of a professional statistician. Chapter 4. Patients and characteristics Of the 111 included patients 57 patients were male (51% ) and 54 patients were female (49% ). There were 151 affected ears and 71 unaffected ears. Of all patients 36% was bilaterally affected. Chapter 5. Pure-tone and speech audiometry Chapter 6. Electrocochleography All patients underwent transtympanic EcoG in both ears. The protocol consisted of averaging 1500 responses to each of the following stimuli: clicks -alternating, condensation and rarefaction (duration 80 is); alternating tone bursts -1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz (duration 10ms, rise and fall time two cycles of the sine wave). The amplitude of the clicks and tone bursts was 90 dB n HL, except for 8 kHz bursts that were presented at 75 dB n HL. The stimuli were delivered to the ear at a rate of 11.3/s, using an insert earphone. Summation and action potentials (SP and AP) of clicks and tone bursts, and click latencies (alternating, condensation, rarefaction) were measured. The SP (tone bursts) was calculated in two fundamentally different ways (SP1 , SP2). The results of affected and unaffected ears were systematically compared and related to the magnitude of hearing IO.5S, the duration of disease and the severity of complaints.
