DÖKMETAÞ*** ABSTRACT: Melorheostosis is an uncommon bone dysplasia of unknown origin, characterized by a slowly progressing hyperostosis. It was first reported by Leri and Joanny in 1922, and approximately 300 cases have been reported in the literature. In the present article we described an unusual case of melorheostosis of both hands with associating generalized osteopenia. A discussion of the case and a brief review of the literature on the subject were presented. Keywords: Bone dysplasia, sclerosis, melorheostosis. I've tried to research this disease several times with very limited results. Is there any research at all any where being conducted to understand the mechanics behind this disease? And, are there any treatments experimental or otherwise besides morphine and steroids? The most recent paper I can find on your illness was published in November 2000, but there seems to be researchers in several areas of the world interested in the disease (which is a good sign!) I read an interesting abstract from a paper published in 1997 in Argentina, about two women who had good results with using calcium supplements and pamidronate. They both had what is called high bone turnover with their illness, so I don't know whether this paper would even apply to your particular case. You might want to print this out and talk with your doctor about it.
