Most people are alerted to the possibility that they have skin cancer because they notice a difference in the appearance of their skin. Such an occurrence may take the form of a spot, sore, or mole with a changeable size, shape, color, or 'feel.' Some common presentations of early skin cancers are:
  • firm, red lump
  • small, pale, smooth, shiny or "waxy" lump
  • sore that begins oozing or bleeding
  • sore or rough red spot that becomes scaly or crusty
  • spot that becomes itchy, tender, or painful

Choroidal Melanoma Description: Malignant melanoma can grow within the eye. They arise from the blood-vessel layer "choroid" beneath the retina. In North America, only 6 out of each million people will get a choroidal melanoma each year. This cancer can spread to other parts of the body. In North America, most choroidal melanoma patients have no symptoms and the melanoma is found on routine eye examination. If patients have symptoms, they are usually: seeing flashes of light, distortion or loss of vision, and floating objects (floaters) in the vision. Eye cancer specialists determine if you have a choroidal melanoma by performing a complete eye examination. This includes asking questions about your medical history, examining both of your eyes, looking into the eye at the tumor, doing an ultrasound examination, and specialized photography (to examine the circulation within the tumor).
Your specialist will request that you have a complete general medical checkup and specific tests depending upon what he sees inside your eye. Eye cancer specialists can correctly diagnose an intraocular choroidal melanoma in over 96% of cases (without a biopsy). Though occasionally necessary, biopsies are usually avoided because they require opening the eye which risks letting tumor cells out.

"Melanoma: Watch Your Back" Article authored by
Anastasia Petro, MD, Jennifer Schwartz, MD
These days it's not only the suspicious stranger lurking behind your back that you have to watch. In the United States, you are more likely to run into trouble from a melanoma on your back, the most common location of this potentially deadly skin cancer.
Each year over a million people in the United States alone will be diagnosed with skin cancer. Of these, approximately 80,000 will be afflicted with melanoma. The incidence or the number of new cases of melanoma per year continues to rise. One in seventy-one persons born in the year 2001 will develop melanoma over their lifetime. Although it is not the most common skin cancer, melanoma is the most aggressive and has the ability to spread to other parts of the body.
Melanoma is a malignant tumor that is made up of abnormal melanocytes. Normal melanocytes, which reside in everybody's skin, are cells that produce a brown pigment called melanin. Melanin is the major determinant of a person's skin color and also serves as the body's own natural sunscreen. A melanoma develops when certain melanocytes are no longer able to control their own growth and continue to multiply at a fast rate. This phenomenon occurs when melanocytes undergo significant damage. Too much exposure to sunlight, especially enough to cause blistering or peeling sunburns during childhood, can result in enough cellular injury to cause a melanoma as well as other skin cancers. In addition, there are other factors that make a person more susceptible to developing a melanoma. These include:

DESCRIPTION
What is melanoma?
Melanoma is a disease of the skin in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the cells that color the skin (melanocytes). Melanoma usually occurs in adults, but it may occasionally be found in children and adolescents. The skin protects the body against heat, light, infection, and injury. It is made up of two main layers: the epidermis (the top layer) and dermis (the inner layer). Melanocytes are found in the epidermis and they contain melanin, which gives the skin its color. Melanoma is sometimes called cutaneous melanoma or malignant melanoma. Melanoma is a more serious type of cancer than the more common skin cancers, basal cell cancer or squamous cell cancer, which begin in the basal or squamous cells of the epidermis. (Refer to the PDQ summary on Skin Cancer Treatment for more information.) Melanoma can spread (metastasize) quickly to other parts of the body through the lymph system or through the blood. (Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures that are found throughout the body; they produce and store infection-fighting cells.) A doctor should be seen if a person has any of the following warning signs of melanoma: change in the size, shape, or color of a mole; oozing or bleeding from a mole; or a mole that feels itchy, hard, lumpy, swollen, or tender to the touch. Melanoma can also appear on the body as a new mole. Men most often get melanoma on the trunk (the area of the body between the shoulders and hips) or on the head or neck; women most often get melanoma on the arms and legs.
