Other Notable Tom Dooleys:
Thomas A. Dooley, M.D.
Dr. Thomas A. Dooley, M.D., who would eventually become internationally recognized for his medical work in Southeast Asia during the 1950s, was born in 1927 into an American Roman Catholic family. Surprisingly, Dooley proved to be an irresponsible student who graduated near the bottom of his class at the St. Louis University Medical School. He was even forced to repeat his senior year of studies. His internship was prolonged by half a year due to his being deemed to immature to continue on to his residency. In April of 1953, due to his political connections, Dooley was able to join the Navy Medical College with the rank of lieutenant. With this not-so-promising scenario set, Dooley would soon be internationally recognized for his work. In the spring of 1954, the French had been defeated in Vietnam at the battle of Dien Bien Phu. Through Operation Passage to Freedom, those who wished to transfer from the north to the south (or vice versa) would be able to do so until May of 1955. Sent on board the USS Montague to help serve as a French translator for the United States, Dooley recognized an opportunity to regain respect for his name. Sending letters to the United States press, he would sensationalize the situation and his work. His reputation, in the end, was actually furthered due to the political standards of the time and America's strong anti-communist outlook.

Melanoma
What is melanoma?
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer. It begins in certain cells in the skin called melanocytes. Each year more than 53,600 people in the United States find out they have melanoma. To understand melanoma, it is helpful to know about the skin and about melanocytes, what they do, how they grow, and what happens when they become cancerous. THE SKIN
The skin is the body's largest organ. It protects us against sunlight, injury, and infection. It helps regulate body temperature, stores water and fat, and produces vitamin D. The skin has two main layers: the outer epidermis and the inner dermis. The epidermis is mostly made up of flat, scalelike cells called squamous cells. Round cells called basal cells lie under the squamous cells in the epidermis. The lower part of the epidermis also contains melanocytes. The dermis contains blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, hair follicles, and glands. Some of these glands produce sweat, which help regulate body temperature, and some produce sebum, an oily substance that helps keep the skin from drying out. Sweat and sebum reach the skin's surface through tiny openings called pores.

Information Approximately 80% of the world's population depends exclusively on plants for their health and healing. In the developed world, reliance on surgery and pharmaceutical medicine is more usual, but increasingly, more and more people are complementing their treatment with natural supplements. On this site, there are over 100 pages that provide only information . There are also about 30 pages that discuss herbs and herbal products that can be used to support different aspects of cancer treatment. Though some of the products are available to practitioners through Sacred Medicine Sanctuary, there is no sales pitch, merely intelligent explanations of the herbal remedies as they have been used by skilled practitioners historically and in the present. A wealth of material on diet, life style, and psychospiritual approaches to healing that can be used in conjunction with cancer treatment can also be found on this site though much of this material is being transferred to

Philip A. Matorin, MD
March 4, 1993 Between 2 and 3 billion melanocytes in the human body provide pigmentation to the skin and hair by producing melanin. Melanocytes develop from neuroectodermal elements in the early stages of gestation. Melanomas develop from the malignant neoplastic transformation of these cells. The reported incidence in the U.S. population is 4 cases per 100,000, while the incidence in Australia is as high as 40 cases per 100,000. Ethnicity and sun exposure appear to play a major role in the development of cutaneous melanoma. Ultraviolet B light is thought to be the most important factor in sun exposure. According to epidemiologic data, those with blond hair, blue eyes, and those that tend to burn or freckle easily after sun exposure are at the highest risk. There is also a reported slight male preponderance of 1.5 : 1 and a peak incidence in the 4th to 7th decades.

Melanoma
Melanoma or "black mole cancer" is the name given to the most dangerous form of skin cancer. The reason melanoma is so dangerous is that once it grows to a certain thickness, it metastasizes or spreads throughout the body. After melanoma has spread to the internal organs there is little that can be done and death follows shortly after. This type of cancer tends to occur in men and women in the prime of their lives. Melanoma is seen mainly not in outdoor workers, but in indoor professionals. This is considered to be due to the fact that indoor workers get bursts of sunlight on weekends and holidays. It is thought that these short bursts of sunlight are responsible for the development of this cancer. People who are light in skin tone, fair hair, and who have a family member who has had a melanoma need to be particularly careful and should have a complete skin exam each year. A history of melanoma in the family leads to a greater chance of developing a melanoma. The person at greatest risk is the light-skinned, indoor worker who gets bursts of sunlight during weekends or holidays. A person can avoid getting melanoma by avoiding sunlight and wearing a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher while in the sun. People who work indoors should be especially careful. If you work indoors and only get bursts of sunlight on vacations and weekends, it is very important to wear sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher. Melanomas are usually treated by
