So far, my melanoma story is short and sweet: I had it, they found it, they removed it, I don't have it. Of course, we will have to see what the future holds in store for me. To all my new friends at the MPIP BBS , I say thank you for your support and advice. For those of you who are not familiar with my story, the following are some excerpts from my posts to the aforementioned BBS, which will give you a feel for my situation and the operation ( W ide L ocal E xcision, radiolymphoscintigraphy , and lymphadenectomy), the results of which are so graphically shown in the pictures below. NOTE: The links that are highlighted (with the exception of 'wow', 'perspective', 'love', and the picture, which are linked to humorous sound files) represent links to sites on the web that I found exceptionally helpful and relevant. BACKGROUND Posted on May 15, 1997 Two weeks ago, my GP did a punch-hole type biopsy. The path report said melatonistic lesion highly suspicious for malignant melanoma. The location of the 'incident' was between my neck and right shoulder. Last week, my gp removed a patch of skin down to the fascia with a minimum margin of one cm (the scar is almost two inches long). The skin patch was sent back to the lab and this time they identified a 1.5 mm deep melanoma

T his page is dedicated to my beloved father, John Brockman, who died June 29, 2000. Had we known the information on this page, he might be alive today. Instead, we were advised by our oncologists that nothing could be done. This was the beginning of our search, within the medical community, for a cutting-edge treatment for this rare form of metastatic melanoma. Very few doctors are aware of the extraordinarily aggressive nature of this tumor, and even fewer are aware of recent developments which can at least significantly prolong life, if not cure the cancer. Ocular (uveal) melanoma patients who have had liver metastases and have undergone treatment have generously provided their stories here There is no time to lose. W hen you find an appropriate treatment, you must convince your doctors to take action immediately. At each stage, as we discovered the next possible treatment, the tumor had already grown too large for it. My dad, who was otherwise in perfect health, was dead just eight weeks after diagnosis.

Melanoma Patient Educator and Counselor

Andrew W. Kneier, Ph.D. Melanoma patient educator and counselor at one of the country's leading melanoma treatment and research centers. Available for telephone consultations with melanoma patients and family members. For newly-diagnosed melanoma patients and for patients with recurrent melanoma. Information and support concerning metastatic melanoma and melanoma clinical trials. Who Am I?
I am the patient educator and clinical psychologist at the Melanoma Center at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). The Melanoma Center is part of the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center. Over the last 20 years, I have met individually with over 6,500 melanoma patients, and each week I meet with five or six new patients. Usually the patient's spouse or other family members also participate in these meetings. I meet with patients in the course of their initial visit to the UCSF Melanoma Center. My role is to help patients gain a better understanding about their diagnosis and the medical treatments, and to provide support and guidance to patients and their families in coping with melanoma and the many stresses and uncertainties it creates. I also participate in the weekly case conference in which all of the specialists on our melanoma team put their heads together in assessing each new case and in formulating individually-tailored treatment plans. How I Can Help You
If you have been diagnosed with melanoma, or if the melanoma has spread, you are probably trying to sort things out, understand what it all means, keep your wits about you, and gain some direction for how to proceed. Here's how I can help:

55. COMS - About Choroidal Melanoma
About Choroidal melanoma. What is Choroidal melanoma? Choroidal melanoma is a primary cancer of the eye. How is the diagnosis of choroidal melanoma made?
http://www.jhu.edu/wctb/coms/booklet/book2.htm
About Choroidal Melanoma
What is Choroidal Melanoma?
Choroidal melanoma is a primary cancer of the eye. It arises from the pigmented cells of the choroid of the eye and is not a tumor that started somewhere else and spread to the eye. Malignant means that the tumor is a cancer which may metastasize, that is, spread to other parts of the body. Although some choroidal melanomas are more life-threatening than others, almost all should be treated as if they were malignant.
How is the diagnosis of choroidal melanoma made?
Choroidal melanoma is diagnosed during an examination of the eye by an ophthalmologist. Your eye doctors are able to recognize a choroidal melanoma by the degree of pigmentation of the tumor, by its shape and location, and by other features observed in an eye examination. Unlike tumors in other parts of the body, choroidal melanoma is directly visible through the "window" provided by the pupil. Most of the time, the ophthalmologist can be nearly certain of the diagnosis from clinical appearance, photographs, and ultrasound pictures. Therefore, biopsy, which is often indicated to diagnose tumors in other parts of the body, is avoided.
Are there any tests which help in the diagnosis of choroidal melanoma?

Peter's FUNd Racer is a ski race for all ages and abilities.
The primary focus of the event is to raise money for melanoma research. Malignant melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer. The number of people who develop melanoma is increasing faster than any other cancer. Deaths from complications of this disease are increasing at a faster rate than deaths from any other form of cancer except lung cancer. On May 23rd, 1999, melanoma claimed the life of Peter M. Newton at the age of 46. In addition to raising funds for melanoma research, contributions are also made to the Vermont Respite House in Williston, Vermont and the Sugarbush Ski Patrol that Peter served proudly on for twelve years. The secondary focus of Peter's FUNd Racer is to challenge yourself just a little and to have fun! 60. Melanoma
melanoma. June, 2001. WHAT IS melanoma? melanoma is the most lethal skin cancer, although it can be cured easily if caught early enough.
http://www.reutershealth.com/wellconnected/doc32.html
Melanoma June, 2001 WHAT IS MELANOMA? Melanoma is the most lethal skin cancer, although it can be cured easily if caught early enough. It is named for the skin cells from which it arises, called the melanocytes . These skin cells produce a brown-black skin pigment called melanin , which helps to protect against the damaging rays of the sun and to determine skin coloring. As a person ages, melanocytes often proliferate, forming concentrated clusters that appear on the surface as small, dark, flat or dome-shaped spots, which are usually harmless moles or liver spots.
  • When cell proliferation occurs in a controlled and contained manner, the resulting lesion is benign and is commonly referred to as a mole or nevus . Most adults have at least several dozen benign moles.
  • Sometimes, however, pigment cells grow out of control and become malignant and life-threatening melanoma.
Early detection of melanoma is critical because of the skin's unique anatomy:
  • The outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis , is only about 20 cells deep, roughly as thick as a sheet of paper.
