Welcome to the Hellenic Melanoma Site. This is a cooperative gateway to the scientific world of melanoma. You are invited to join us to a space where everyone can contribute, where everyone together can build a clearinghouse for educational information and research activity concerning melanoma in Greece. The primary purpose of the HMS is to provide knowledge about the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of melanoma. The final goal is to explore the profile of melanoma in Greece in comparison with melanoma worldwide. Since 1986, the Department of Plastic Surgery and Microsurgery and the Department of Pathology in the General Hospital of Athens "G. Gennimatas", have founded a collaborating group for the prevention, early diagnosis and surgical treatment of melanoma. This collaboration led, in 1989, to the establishment of an outpatient clinic for Pigmented Skin Lesions (PSL). A mean number of 40 patients are clinically examined weekly. Biopsies and histological examinations are performed, when needed. The progressively increasing number of patients gave us the possibility to expand our activities in the field of research and to develop a database for a close follow up of the patients.

Detection, diagnosis, and treatment of cutaneous malignant melanomas at the earliest possible stage will give the highest possible cure rate. We know that people with a large number of moles have an increased risk of developing a malignant melanoma. We also know that people with atypical (unusual) moles are more likely to develop new and changing lesions. It is important to know the special characteristics of moles that have a higher tendency to become malignant melanomas.
