Mayer Rokitansky Kuster Hauser syndrome
Mayer Rokitansky Kuster Hauser syndrome is a gynecological disorder which means reproductive malformations.
We've heard of heart malformations and limb deformities but genital malformations? This is part of Mayer Rokitanksy Kuster Hauser Syndrome(MRKH) which includes a short or nonexistent vagina, no cervix, and a partial or absent uterus. The causes are unknown. bodyOffer(31731) Most women find about this when they are teenagers. Some girls may find out at a young age when they have surgeries for some other problems such as hernias. Yet the majority find out when their periods won't come. They despair because sisters got their periods at earlier ages. They think they're "late bloomers". A visit to the obstetrician-gynecologist will be futile when the doctors are unable to do pelvic exams on them because of their short or nonexistent vaginas. Instead doctors use laparoscopic surgery where they insert a light through the navel or they use ultrasound to make a diagnosis. This way, the doctors are able to ascertain the condition of the reproductive organs. Doctors should find normal ovaries and fallopian tubes. However, they should find no uterus or an incomplete one. An incomplete one is usually removed because it may cause cramps. Once the doctors find these problems, the question changes from why haven't I gotten a period to how can a doctor "cure" it? A doctor can't cure the 'no periods' part because the women don't have uteruses.

The syndrome includes a combined agenesis of the uterus and cervix and upper two thirds of the vagina. The Fallopian tubes and ovaries are usually present. After gonadal dysgenesis, Rokintansky Kuster Hauser syndrome is the second most common cause of primary amenorrhoea. While sonographic evaluation may indicate absence of the uterus, findings on MRI often add additonal information and demonstrate the absence of the uterus or show a fibrous uterine remnant, (which demonstrate a low signal intensity on T2-weighted image). In this syndrome, there is no chromosomal abnormality, and the female usually exhibits 46XX. See agenesis uterine

Hi. I have been diagnosed with Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster Hauser Syndrome (MRKH) and I was looking to find some individual who have been diagnosed with the samd disorder or who have been diagnosed with MURCS Association (asociated with Klippel Feil Syndrome (KFS, a similar disorder. Hi, My name is Elizabeth. I have MRKH, a disorder where you dont have a uterus and/or a poorly formed vagina. I'm 16. Anyway, were you given a diagnosis for your over condition-a syndrome or something? I live in VA and go to Johns Hopkins Hospital-great doctors there. I'm having kidney tests done soon. MRKH can affect your kidneys, uterus, vagina, renal system, and even your skeletal system. To my knowledge I have a mild case. Hope to hear from you soon. Elizabeth P.S. Do you have a period? If you don't mind me asking. Bye.

Upper New York State Society of Cytology,Inc Submitted by: Sharon Leo, MS, CT(ASCP), CMIAC University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, NY History A routine Pap smear was received on a 24 year old patient. The specimen was labeled vaginal scrape and the LMP was given as "?". Cytologic Findings The specimen was cellular with normal squamous cells scattered throughout. Single columnar cells with basal nuclei were numerous. Cytoplasm was indeterminate and granular. Some single goblet cells were also identified. Larger aggregates had the "Swiss cheese" appearance of intestinal metaplasia. Diagnosis/Discussion Negative for malignancy. Glandular epithelium with goblet cells identified consistent with intestinal mucosa. The patient had a history Mayer Rokitansky Kuster Hauser Syndrome. This syndrome occurs in the fifth gestational week and affects about 1 in every 4000-5000 women(1). The patients are genetic females and are born with short or non-existent vaginas. Other reproductive abnormalities, i.e., lack of uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, ovaries, external genitalia, etc., vary with each individual patient. Treatment can be surgical(vaginoplasty) or "pressure dilation" to create a vagina(1). Pressure dilation is the preferred method of treatment(1). A dilator is used at the vaginal entrance to actually expand and push the squamous epithelium internally to create the vagina. The pressure can be applied in a sitting position on a chair and the appliance length can be adjusted as needed. It is a long and time consuming procedure. To be successful, patients must receive adequate emotional support and counseling early on. Several surgical techniques are available, including transplanting a length of intestine with its blood supply to form a vagina(1). Even after choosing surgery, patients may still need to use a dilator.

T W Mission statement shared with Bodies Like Ours: We seek to positively change the way we think about ourselves and the way society and the medical community views us. We believe that through awareness, education, and peer support, our goals of eliminating isolation, shame and secrecy experienced by people born with bodies like ours will be reached. "The belief that Homo sapiens is absolutely dimorphic with the respect to sex chromosome composition, gonadal structure, hormone levels, and the structure of the internal genital duct systems and external genitalia, derives from the platonic ideal that for each sex there is a single, universally correct developmental pathway and outcome.  We surveyed the medical literature from 1955 to the present for studies of the frequency of eviation from the ideal male or female. We conclude that this frequency may be as high as 2% of live births. "
