LONDON, England (CNN) Scientists have accused international health agencies of supporting cheap, ineffective and outdated drugs to fight malaria in poor countries in a report published this week. The researchers say that the World Health Organization and the Global Fund for Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria, in particular, should make a better effort to implement newer and more efficient treatments. Malaria kills about 1 million people every year, the majority young children in Africa, according to WHO figures. Both agencies defended their positions, saying they cannot dictate countries' drug policies and that many are changing to the new drugs.

What is Malaria? Why do you need to be concerned about Malaria? Why is Malaria spreading?
Among my biggest concerns is disease, specifically malaria. I contracted malaria a few times during my travels, but the last time I nearly perished from a resistant strain I caught in Irian Jaya. For two and half years, I had re-occurrences every three months. Those painful attacks and the terrible side effects from Larium (also called Mefloquine) led me to do much research on the subject. I discussed my problem with specialists in the States, Europe and Asia. Malaria and its treatment remains a very controversial subject (many scientists and doctors remain in disagreements). In this page, my intention is to educate people about the dangers of Malaria, but also on the responsibilities of all travelers in the third world to do their part to both stay safe and not perpetrate resistant strains amongst the local people. Malaria Prevention, a controversial subject

A promising bunch of killers
In the heyday of the war on malaria, widespread DDT-spraying campaigns were used to stifle the pesky bloodsuckers. But DDT played havoc with the environment it killed birds and beneficial insects as well as anopheles mosquitoes. And the mosquitoes eventually gained resistance to DDT, and then to newer insecticides. And that's led to a new attitude among people whose job is to make a mosquito's life nastier , more brutish , and particularly, shorter . The idea of "using a magic bullet against mosquitoes is history," says James Becnel of the mosquito and fly research unit of the U.S. Agricultural Research Service. "The idea of eradicating mosquitoes is not realistic." But Becnel does think a more realistic goal is achievable: "the reduction and management of the population below the threshold that would cause disease" through a combination of:
Public education Explaining that some disease-carrying mosquitoes breed in tires and other artificial containers, including flower pots around the house.
Behavioral controls Covering beds with insecticide-soaked mosquito nets.

What is NetMark? NetMark Plus is an eight-year, $65.4 million dollar project designed to reduce the impact of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa through the increased use and sustainable supply of insecticide treated mosquito nets (ITNs), and insecticide treatments kits for nets, through partnership and joint investment with a wide range of international and local commercial partners. Core partners on NetMark include The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Exp. Momentum (formerly Group Africa) and FCB Advertising. Commercial partners include BASF, Bayer AG, Siamdutch Mosquito Netting Company, A-Z Textiles, ExxonMobil, Vestergaard Frandsen, Syngenta, Mossnet Industries, Harvestfield Industries, and Sunflag Nigeria.

The original sexual predator?
POSTED 6 JAN 2000 Malaria it's so common you can't even count the death toll. Is it one million? Is it three million, mainly pregnant women and the young? We don't know, nor can we count the annual disease toll between 300 to 500 million people, mainly in the tropics. Although malaria is seldom fatal, it can cause coma, mental retardation, or rupture of the spleen. Even though malaria mainly afflicts people with impaired cash flow, making it a bore to the money-mad medical machine, scientists are still trying to figure out how the parasite works, and how to fight it. For a lowly parasite, the various species of protozoans in the genus Falciparum have lots of nasty tricks. They can
  • change their coating to evade the immune system,
  • be spread by mosquitoes a wily foe that no amount of insecticide can eliminate, and

Malarial parasites are carried and spread by mosquitos Story Tools
SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) A breakthrough treatment for malaria based on traditional Chinese medicine holds real potential to reduce the impact of the killer disease, according to the World Health Organization. WHO says the affordable and effective treatment should be available to fight the disease by about 2006. More than one million people predominantly children under the age of five are killed each year by malarial parasites. Many millions more are incapacitated by recurring bouts of the disease which is caused by parasites which are carried and spread by mosquitos. Disturbingly, the most deadly form of the disease plasmodium falciparum is becoming increasingly resistant to existing treatments, particularly in the Thai-Myanmar border region and throughout Africa. The new treatment is based on the plant qinghaosu, or sweet wormwood, which Chinese physicians have recognized for centuries as having anti-malarial properties.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Red blood cell infected with P.vivax Malaria (Italian bad air ; formerly called ague in English) is a tropical infectious disease which causes about half a billion infections and two million deaths annually, mainly in tropical countries and especially in sub-Saharan Africa . The protozoan cause of malaria was discovered by a French army doctor, Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran , for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in Malaria is caused by the protozoan parasite Plasmodium (one of the Apicomplexa ) - the main culprits are P. falciparum and P. vivax , but P. ovale and P. malariae are also known to cause malaria. The vector for the malarial parasite is the Anopheles mosquito Symptoms of malaria include fever shivering arthralgia (joint pain), vomiting , and convulsions . There may be the feeling of tingling in the skin, particularly with malaria caused by P. falciparum . Complications of malaria include coma and death if untreated - young children are especially vulnerable.
