    Malaria (mah-LARE-ee-ah) What is malaria?
Malaria is a serious, sometimes fatal, disease caused by a parasite. There are four kinds of malaria that can infect humans: Plasmodium falciparum (plaz-MO-dee-um fal-SIP-a-rum) , P. vivax (VI-vacks), P. ovale (o-VOL-ley), and P. malariae (ma-LER-ee-aa). Where does malaria occur? Malaria occurs in over 100 countries and territories. More than 40% of the people in the world are at risk. Large areas of Central and South America, Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania are considered malaria-risk areas (an area of the world that has malaria). How common is malaria?

MeSH scope note: A protozoan disease caused in humans by four species of the genus PLASMODIUM (P. falciparum ( MALARIA, FALCIPARUM); P. vivax ( MALARIA, VIVAX); P. ovale, and P. malariae) and transmitted by the bite of an infected female mosquito of the genus Anopheles. Malaria is endemic in parts of Asia, Africa, Central and South America, Oceania, and certain Caribbean islands. It is characterized by extreme exhaustion associated with paroxysms of high fever, sweating, shaking chills, and anemia. Malaria in animals is caused by other species of plasmodia. SIMA's goal
malaria reduction resulting in improved health and well being, increased agricultural productivity, and poverty alleviation The purpose of SIMA is to promote research and capacity building that will increase the understanding on the links between malaria and agriculture, and to test innovative interventions that would reinforce existing malaria control strategies under different agricultural systems Why SIMA? Most of the newly launched global research initiatives on malaria focus on molecular biology, vaccine and drug development. Other development-oriented initiatives focus on strengthening health services, promoting community-health approaches and distribution of insecticide treated nets. SIMA complements these initiatives by creating a new community of specialists in cross-cutting issues on the interface between malaria and agriculture. What is SIMA? SIMA is the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Systemwide Initiative on Malaria and Agriculture. SIMA brings together malaria research, agricultural research and target communities to find solutions to the malaria problem. Three specific outputs have been formulated for SIMA. These are: Expanding knowledge base, building transdisciplinary research capacity and disseminating research information. See the SIMA S ummary and the updated SIMA Framework Document for more details.

I have established a malaria discussion mailing list over the Internet. This will provide a forum for anyone wishing to ask, preach or communicate on the general subject of malaria. At last count there were about 828 recipients, many of which I had unilaterally joined up myself, and several interesting discussions have been held. I would like to join up more people if I can get their e-mail addresses. It is run on majordomo at The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and can be accessed by anyone with an e-mail address. To join, you send a subscription message which places your name on a list of mail recipients. If you later send a mail message to the discussion group, it will automatically be sent to all the people who have subscribed. As more people subscribe your message will reach a wider audience, increasing your chances of spreading your message or getting your questions answered.

    Roll Back Malaria Department
The Roll Back Malaria Partnership is a global initiative —made up of more than 90 partners— whose goal is to halve the burden of malaria by 2010. RBM was launched in 1998 by the World Health Organization, UNICEF, UNDP and the World Bank to provide a coordinated international approach to fighting malaria. The RBM Partnership website features the global strategy and programmatic approaches of the Partnership, issues surrounding country-level implementation of malaria control, malaria news and events, and information about the structure and operations of the Partnership, including thematic Working Groups.
The WHO Roll Back Malaria Department is responsible for malaria policy and strategy formulation, operations support and capacity development, and coordination of WHO's global efforts to roll back malaria. The Department establishes and promotes — based on evidence and expert consensus — WHO policies, normative standards and guidelines for malaria prevention and control, including monitoring and evaluation.

    HISTORY OF MALARIA
Malaria is a protozoal disease transmitted by the Anopheles mosquito, caused by minute parasitic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium, which infect human and insect hosts alternatively. It is a very old disease and prehistoric man is thought to have suffered from malaria. It probably originated in Africa and accompanied human migration to the Mediterranean shores, India and South East Asia. In the past it used to be common in the marshy areas around Rome and the name is derived from the Italian, (mal-aria) or "bad air"; it was also known as Roman fever. Today some 500 hundred million people in Africa, India, South East Asia and South America are exposed to endemic malaria and it is estimated to cause two and a half million deaths annually, one million of which are children. Fishermen and traders, long before British colonisation, probably introduced the disease into northern Australia and in the past malaria was not uncommon in the northern parts of the country. In Western Australia an explosive outbreak of falciparum malaria occurred at Fitzroy Crossing in 1934 which at first was mistaken for influenza and resulted in 165 deaths. WHO declared Australia free of malaria in 1981, however since that time 9 patients have contracted locally acquired malaria. The so called "airport malaria" has become a problem in recent years. A publican working in an establishment close to London's Heathrow Airport became acutely ill and was found to be suffering from falciparum malaria, he had never been out of the country. A lady driving her car past the same airport became ill with malaria although she too had never been out of the country. Four workers unloading a cargo plane at Amsterdam airport became infected with malaria. It is assumed that infected mosquitoes were carried on planes from Africa and released at the destination airport.
