New Jersey's Janet Skarbek may very well be the next Erin Brockovich. This mother and author from claims to have uncovered a cluster of people who died from mad cow disease in Cherry Hill. The state says she's wrong. But one thing is certain - Janet Skarbek is stirring up quite a bit of controversy, reports The Early Show correspondent Melinda Murphy. That's because public health officials are hoping no one in the U.S. will ever develop the human form of mad cow disease. They've been on the lookout since America's first infected cow was discovered last December . The cow was later found to be imported from Canada , and the U.S. government says our beef supply is safe.

WASHINGTON (AP) Italian scientists have found a second form of mad cow disease that more closely resembles the human Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease than the usual cow form of the illness. The brain-wasting diseases BSE, known as mad cow disease, and human CJD are caused by different forms of mutant proteins called prions. A number of people, mainly in England, have also suffered from what is called variant CJD, a brain disease believed to be acquired by eating meat from infected cows. No Americans have been reported with variant CJD. Now, the team of Italian researchers reports a study of eight cows with mad cow disease found that two of them had brain damage resembling the human victims of CJD. They said the cows were infected with prions that resembled those involved in the standard form of the human disease, called sporadic CJD, not the variant caused by eating infected meat. Salvatore Monaco, lead author of the new study, said the findings may indicate that cattle can also develop a sporadic form of the disease, but it might also be a new foodborne form of the illness.

Report: Mad cow disease may be transferred through blood
LONDON (AP) Sheep in the early, symptom-free stages of the brain-wasting "mad cow" disease can pass the illness to other sheep through blood transfusions, new research has found. The findings published Friday in the Lancet medical journal raise the possibility that the human form of the disease could be transmitted through blood transfusions.

Revelation 13: Mad Cow Disease (BSE) - A New Age / Prophecy Analysis
"The Moo heard round the world"
But the disease would never have spread if England's beef farmers had not been feeding ground up cow remains to cows to make them grow faster, which spread the disease to other cattle. This being the equivalent of cannibalism in cattle, this beef farming practice is also used elsewhere in the world. If they had fed the cattle ground-up leftover fish instead, then this never would have happened. And another terrible thing about BSE is that the infectious prion molecules that spread it are very hard to destroy by heat or chemicals, and can last years in the soil. So you can't just bury BSE infected cattle, you have to incinerate them at high temperatures. So a widespread epidemic of BSE could contaminate the environment with infectionious prions. And noone knows if other feed animals such as pigs and chicken can also spread BSE, or whether other products of cattle such as leather can spread BSE. Maybe you can get it from your leather wallet, noone knows yet.
Mad-Cow Disease infecting people's brains was announced on March 20 1996 in England as the Comet Hyakutake passed by the constellation (I mean constellation, not astrological sign) Virgo the Virgin. I think that virgo the Virgin represents Isis, the Egyptian Goddess portrayed with cow's horns, giving us a "cow" connection. And Virgo may also represent Europa, representing Europe, who rides a bull, again giving us a "cow" connection. And Europa on a bull sounds like the woman in the Bible's last chapter, the Book of Revelation, Revelation 17 named "Babylon" who rides the beast of the Antichrist described in Revelation 13 (which may be

What is BSE?
Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a disease condition in cattle which is thought to have originated in Great Britain. It occurs in cattle between two and eight years old and is always fatal. The most plausible cause of the disease is a prion, a "self-replicating" protein, rather than a bacterium or virus. BSE causes a portion of the brain to become sponge-like. Brain, central nervous system tissue, and the distal ileum (portion of the small intestine) can carry the infective agent, and measures have been taken to exclude those parts known to carry the infective agent (primarily brain and central nervous system tissue) from the food and feed supply. BSE is often referred to as "mad cow" disease, because animals infected with the disease are often irritable and can react in a somewhat violent or threatening fashion when approached by humans.

In yet more news revealing the horrifying activities of the U.S. beef industry, it has recently been publicized that ranchers are routinely pumping veal calves full of illegal hormones in an effort to get them to grow faster. The USDA acts "shocked" about this, but in fact, this practice is common knowledge in the veal industry. For overall statements about BSE and CJD, please see the FDA site and the USDA site that are present here. Index:
Editorial
It is quite likely that the media in the US and the public may not rally around their farmers in quite the same way that the USDA are hoping. What would be expected would be an immediate fall in beef sales but with a long, slow return of the sales over the following year. The levels may not return to where they were ever again and beef may well become a much less desired meat than the farmers are hoping. This can be predicted because of the way in which beef sales fell following the cases of vCJD in UK and the cases of BSE appearing in Europe as a whole. The way in which the American media have pointed the BSE finger at Europe in the past and suggested that eating beef in Europe was a risk must make it difficult to claim that US BSE is in some way safer. Exactly that took place in Japan where, when BSE appeared, the beef sales crashed.

MAD COW DISEASE Written by, Suzanne Sutton in 1997 Mad Cow Disease, known scientifically as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle, is an incurable spongy degenaration of the brain and central nervous system. A similar complex disease in humans, known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), acts like an accelerated form of Alzheimer's, and is characterized by an irreversible degeneration of brain tissue-holes formed in the brain, disabling and finally killing the victim. The fear of this unusually cruel and fatal neurological disease has sent shock waves throughout Europe and around the globe, creating one of the biggest consumer panics ever experienced in the industrialized world. QUESTIONS How do cattle and humans contract this disease?
Surely...Proper authorities in this country are taking actions to prevent this disease?

...Shifting from beef to other meats such as pork, poultry...is not this the safe, sane thing to do?

Symptoms of CJD...resemble those of Alzheimer's...Could there be a connection?
... Facts you should know about Mad Cow Disease! Q. How do cattle and humans contract this disease?

House panel holding hearings on mad cow disease implications
WASHINGTON (CNN) A Senate panel opens hearings today on the U.S. government response to the threat of mad cow disease and whether enough is being done to keep the threat of the illness out of the United States. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Health (USDA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the beef industry and consumer advocates are expected to testify at the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Affairs, Foreign Commerce and Tourism hearing. Mad cow disease has been back in the spotlight, following the USDA's seizure of a flock of sheep in Vermont last month. Some of those sheep had tested positive for scrapie, a disease similar to mad cow disease. "The U.S. has had firewalls in place to protect the cattle population from getting infected with mad cow disease and there are some gaps in these firewalls," according to Caroline Smith DeWaal, Director of the Food Safety Program fir the Center for Science in the Public (CSPI).
