Senate hears testimony on mad cow disease
From Peter Hartogs and Miriam Falco CNN Medical Unit WASHINGTON (CNN) There is very little chance that bovine spongiform encephalopathy BSE, or mad cow disease will enter the United States, a panel of scientists and industry experts told senators Wednesday. But consumer advocates said even more needs to be done to ensure it is kept out. BSE is linked to a human brain-wasting disease new variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease (nvCJD) that has killed some 80 Europeans, mostly Britons, since the mid-1990s. TRANSCRIPT CNN's Elizabeth Cohen discusses the Senate hearings on mad cow disease MESSAGE BOARD How concerned should the U.S. be about mad cow disease? Related sites Members of the Senate Commerce subcommittee on consumer affairs, foreign commerce and tourism, asking if current government standards are sufficient to keep the diseases out of the United States, heard testimony from representatives of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health, beef industry and consumer groups. "The likelihood of BSE in the United States is very low," said veterinarian William Hueston of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. "We realize there are potential exposures to BSE in the United States, but they are very, very few and very low."

Bad Hair Day
The US government announced that WMDs have been found and verifiedin Saddam Hussein's hair (and in his sinus cavities, under his nails and in his ear wax). James Twain, medical researcher at Bethesda Naval Hospitalwhere Saddam's DNA was checkedreports that excessive traces of Sarin gas were found in the dictator's hair (After Saddam was captured his hair and toenails were cut, his blood was drawn, and urine and stool samples were taken at gunpoint. All speciments for sent to Bethesda for analysis. The full medical report will be published in the September 2004 New England Journal of Medicine). Twain, with a coerced consent degree, subjected Saddam's blood to a battery of tests. He found that Hussein was generally healthy except for an elevated PSA (protein specific antigen) level of 9.3, a strong indication that the man has prostate cancer. The Bethesday researcher is trying to get permission to do a biopsy on Saddam but the government ruled that would be cruel and unusual punishment. Twan thinks Saddam would be a great poster boy for prostate cancer. The International Red Cross accuses the Bush administration of withholding medical care to reduce the sympathy vote for Saddam. On examing Saddam's brain scan Twain noticed large holes in the man's brain, consistent with the human version of mad cow disease. Saddam's US interrogators report that he is often incoherent, forgetting words and events, dropping phrases and sentences, and speking an Iraqi version of pig Latin. They also report that Saddam stumbles aimlessly around his cell, frequently falling down. displaying antics very similar to those of a downer cow. For Twain that is evidence enough of mad cow disease.

Courtesy Agricultural Research Service , USDA POSTED 8 FEB 2001 Years after it was supposedly vanquished, mad cow disease, the brain infection that kills cows and some people who eat them, is on a comeback. The disease has spread widely in Europe, and there are danger signs in the United States, where it's never appeared. Mad cow disease is one of several fatal brain diseases called transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, or TSEs. (Want The Why Files guide to mad cow lingo?) The jargon says it all: These infectious diseases shoot the brain full of holes, making it look like a sponge. The TSEs were once considered unlikely to infect other species, but some seem to move rather easily among animals. Most glaringly, many scientists believe people can get vCJD (variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease) from eating mad cows. The awkward name reflects the similarity to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a deadly brain illness that strikes about one person per million per year, due to genetic or unknown causes. While CJD mainly afflicts the elderly, vCJD appears among younger people, almost certainly from eating mad cow meat. The gruesome death starts with mood swings, numbness and uncontrolled body movements. Eventually the mind is destroyed, somewhat like Alzheimer's, another brain-wrecking disease.

Commonly Asked Questions About BSE in Products Regulated by FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN)
In light of the December 23, 2003, diagnosis of BSE in a single cow that had been imported into the United States, CFSAN has reviewed the products it regulates to ensure their safety.
What is "Mad Cow Disease" (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy/BSE)?
Mad Cow Disease is the commonly used name for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), a slowly progressive, degenerative, fatal disease affecting the central nervous system of adult cattle. Since 1990, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has conducted aggressive surveillance of the highest risk cattle going to slaughter in the United States, in which 10,000- 20,000 animals per year have been tested. To date, the only cow that has been found to be affected with BSE was the one diagnosed with BSE in December 2003.
    What causes BSE?
The exact cause of BSE is not known but it is generally accepted by the scientific community that infectious forms of a type of protein, prions, normally found in animals cause BSE. In cattle with BSE, these abnormal prions initially occur in the small intestines and tonsils, and are found in central nervous tissues, such as the brain and spinal cord, and other tissues of infected animals experiencing later stages of the disease.

Texas cattle to be tested for mad cow disease
AUSTIN, Texas (CNN) Animal health officials in Texas plan to put to death 22 German-imported cows to test them for signs of bovine spongiform encelphalopathy (BSE), commonly called mad cow disease. The animals are among 29 that were imported legally into Texas between February 1996 and September 1997, said Carla Everett, a spokeswoman for the Texas Animal Health Commission. She said four of those have already been destroyed and tested, with negative results for BSE, and three others died of causes not related to BSE. The 22 remaining are to be euthanized some time this spring, she said. Twelve others cows came over at the same time as the 29 sent to Texas, with eight going to Colorado, one to California, one to Illinois and two to Minnesota. There was no immediate word on what has being done with those. In 1992, Germany found a BSE-positive animal, one that had been imported from Britain. Three more animals imported to Germany tested positive in 1994, and another two in 1997.
