Welcome...
to the San Gabriel Valley Macintosh User Group (SGVMUG).
We're an Apple-registered user group in the Pasadena area of Southern California. In other words, we serve some of the greater LA area.
(Here's a list of our local communities Our purpose is to help people use Macintosh computers. Like all Mac User Groups, our dues are minimal. Just $30 for a year, or $10 for students. And like most, we're an all-volunteer organization. We meet at the Pasadena Public library the 3rd Monday of each month. At each meeting we have one or two main presentations that introduce you to some sort of Mac software or hardware. You're welcome at our meetings whether you're new to the Mac, an old-timer, or don't even have a Mac yet. You don't have to live in the San Gabriel Valley area or join our group in any way to attend our meetings. If you just happen to be passing through the area and would like to meet more Mac folk or pick up a tip or two, come on down. You can always find up to date information about our next meeting(s) right on this page. We invite you to cruise our site to learn about us and our meetings. You'll always find our meeting list, news, and event announcements on this page, too.

(NCDXF/IARU beacon support coming in a future version) Mac GrayLiner displays a map of the entire Earth, showing day, night, and more importantly, the terminator between day and night. Studies have shown that enhanced radio propagation occurs between two points which are both on the day/night terminator. In addition, the locations of active NCDXF/IARU beacons can be displayed in real time, along with the beacon callsign, country, and location. This should be helpful for identifying DX openings. Mac GrayLiner requires a Mac with a color display. The cost of registering Mac GrayLiner is only $14.99! Before registering, you should download a copy and make sure it works on your particular configuration. Mac GrayLiner is only available for Macintosh systems. No Windows version is available.

Abstract: . In the last twenty years, many algorithms and heuristics were developed to find solutions in constraint networks. Their number increased to such an extent that it quickly became necessary to compare their performances in order to propose a small number of "good" methods. These comparisons often led us to consider FC or FC-CBJ associated with a "minimum domain" variable ordering heuristic as the best techniques to solve a wide variety of constraint networks. In this paper, we first try to... (Update)

I'll give you a Snickers
More than 70% of people would reveal their computer password in exchange for a bar of chocolate, a survey has found. The survey data was gathered by questioning commuters passing through Liverpool Street station in London and found that many were happy to share login and password information with those carrying out the research. As well as people simply telling the questioners their passwords or saying they would hand them over in exchange for some confectionery, a further 34% revealed the word or phrase they used when asked if it had anything to do with a pet or child's name. It's been more than six years since Apple discontinued the Newton, but this week the Worldwide Newton Association was launched "to promote the Newton computing platform."
Based in France, the Association will hold its first conference in Paris on September 5 (just after AppleExpo, France's equivalent of MacWorld).
The press release says, "With several thousands of units currently running worldwide, and a core group of passionate developers, this personal digital assistant has been able to adapt to the latest evolutions in technology found in the computing world: Internet, WiFi, Bluetooth, modern storage media, and so on. Integration of these new technologies is a sign that the Newton remains the king of the PDAs, even though the production and marketing of this miniaturized computer ended over six years ago."

Esko Lyytinen predicts that the 1862 dust trail of comet 109P/Swift -Tuttle will pass just inside of Earth orbit (at a distance of 0.0012 AU) when Earth approaches that point during the upcoming 2004 Perseids. Earth passes the trail node at solar longitude (2000.0) 139.441 degrees. This occurs at 11 August 20:54 UT. The outburst will be visible from parts of Europe and Asia. Esko predicted earlier that the shower will be brief, with a half-strength duration of only about fifteen minutes. Peter Jenniskens pointed out that the outburst should last significantly longer, about FWHM = 42 minutes, and broader if we miss the trail by more than calculated. In more recent work, Lyytinen now arrives at a duration of 40 minutes.
